  • This study was investigated the bactericidal effects of calcium oxide (CaO) on three common foodborne pathogenic bacteria: Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, and Salmonella typhimurium. Each bacteria level was determined in a CaO solution (0.01, 0.03, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, and $0.20\%$ [w/v]) exposed for either 15 sec, 30 sec, 1 min, 2 min, 3 min, 5 min, 10 min, or 30 min. All three bacteria were not greatly affected by CaO solutions at concentrations of 0.01 and $0.03\%$, however, the decline of E. coli $(99\%;\;2.78\;log_{10}CFU/mL)$, L. monocytogens $(45\%;\;1.44\;log_{10}CFU/mL)$, and S. typhimurium $(70\%;\;2.08\;log_{10}CFU/mL)$ was greatest when they were exposed to $0.05\%$ CaO solution for 10 min. Moreover, the bactericidal action of CaO was maintained for at least 24 h of storage. The results of this study provide evidence that CaO, as a substitute for synthetic chemical substances has potential for use in the disinfection and sanitization of foods and food processing equipment.

  • A study investigated the effects of a mixture of Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) and Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis) on diarrhea incidence, immune response, and fecal microflora counts in post-weaning piglets. One hundred 28-day-old piglets were randomly assigned to five treatment groups: negative control (NC), free of antibiotics; positive control (PC), 0.03% chlortetracycline; LB 1, a mixture of L. plantarum and B. subtilis (LB) 0.5 kg/ton feed; LB 2, LB 1.0 kg/ton feed; and LB 3, LB 2.0 kg/ton feed. Diarrhea scores for LB 2 and LB 3 from the 2nd week were significantly reduced compared to NC (P<0.05). In terms of the level of IgG and IFN-${\gamma}$, all treatment groups were significantly higher than NC (P<0.05), and the IgG level of LB 3 was significantly higher than that of PC (P<0.05). Furthermore, fecal lactic acid bacteria (LAB) counts for LB 2 and LB 3 were significantly higher than those of NC and PC (P<0.05). In addition, fecal Enterobacteriaceae (ENT) counts for PC, LB 2 and LB 3 were significantly lower than those of NC (P<0.05). Based on the results from this study, it was concluded that a combination of L. plantarum and B. subtilis strains could be used as potential alternatives to antibiotics to prevent diarrhea incidence in piglets.

  • This study was performed to detect the Salmonella genus-specific DNA marker for comparing of polymophisms between S pullorum and S gallinarum by using PCR amplified techniques. A total of ten primers were used to detect DNA polymorphisms from S pullorum and S gallinarum. The number of DAF bands detected per each primer varied from 26 to 45, with an average of 32.7 using 10 primers. A total of 327 DAF bands were generated and among them 123 bands were polymorphic(37.6%). These DNA amplified fingerprinting(DAF) specific bands for S pullorum and S gallinarum were observed from all primers. For S pullorum, GEN 60-04, GEN 70-04 and GEN 70-03 primers showed a high level of polymorphism with 0.79, 0.70 and 0.57, respectively. But GEN 60-05 primer did not show a level of polymorphism. For S gallinarum, GEN 70-03, 60-04, 60-07, 70-05 and 70-04 primers showed a higher a low level of polymorphism from 0.16 to 0.28. Each five strains of S pullorum and S gallinarum were isolated from chickens showed typical clinical signs related with infection of pullorum disease or fowl typhoid at commercial chicken farms. DNA markers of these strains produced by GEN 70-04, GEN 70-05 and GEN 70-08 showed significant difference of band patterns between S pullorum and S gallinarum. These DNA markers could be used for comparison of DNA marker polymorphism between S pullorum and S gallinarum as well as rapid diagnosis of fowl typhoid and pullorum disease of domestic fowls.

  • Osteoporosis is a common metabolic bone disease characterized by low bone mineral density (BMD) with an increased risk of fracture. Low bone mass results from an imbalance between bone formation by osteoblasts and bone resorption by osteoclasts. Microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) plays a critical role in osteoclast development and thus is an important candidate gene affecting bone turnover and BMD. In order to investigate the genetic effects of MITF variations on osteoporosis, we directly sequenced the MITF gene in 24 Koreans, and identified fifteen sequence variants. Two polymorphisms (+227719C > T and +228953A > G) were selected based on their allele frequencies, and then genotyped in a larger number of postmenopausal women (n = 560). Areal BMD ($g/cm^2$) of the anterior-posterior lumbar spine and the non-dominant proximal femur was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. We found that the MITF + 227719C > T polymorphism was significantly associated with low BMD of the trochanter (p = 0.005-0.006) and total femur (p = 0.02-0.03) (codominant and dominant models), while there was no association with BMD of the lumbar spine. The MITF+228953A > G polymorphism was also associated with low BMD of the femoral shaft (p = 0.05) in the recessive model. Haplotype analysis showed that haplotype 3 of the MITF gene (MITF-ht3) was associated with low BMD of the trochanter (p = 0.03-0.05) and total femur (p = 0.05) (dominant and codominant models). Our results suggest that MITF variants may play a role in the decreased BMD of the proximal femur in postmenopausal women.

  • Purpose: To investigate a correlation between vertical fixation disparity and stereopsis by analyzing distribution of types of vertical fixation disparity. Methods: In this study, RANDOT(R) stereotest partly using random dot was used in stereopsis tests. The vertical fixation disparity in close proximity categorized fixation disparity slope into six types on the basis of the result of measurement in when two thin lines, one for one eye looks, become overlapped as a line by adding into prism with Wesson fixation disparity card while maintaining a distance of 25 cm from patients. Results: In the types of near vertical fixation disparity curve, targeting 43 people, the first type 55.82% was the most distributed, the second type is the least 23.25%, the third type of 4.65%, the fourth type of 4.65%, the fifth type of 6.98%, the sixths types of 4.65% were distributed. The result of a correlation analysis, which shows the degree of linear correlation between two variables, represented that stereopsis is not correlated with Y-intercept (r = -0.07) which show vertical fixation disparity, associated phoria (r = -0.03) and dissociated phoria (r = -0.00), but it was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Fixation disparity slope of vertical fixation disparity (r = 0.36) was shown to have a positive correlation with stereopsis. It has a low positive correlation and a meaningful statistics (p<0.05). The Y-intercept which indicates vertical fixation disparity was also not associated with stereopsis (r = -0.07) and dissociated phoria (r = -0.03), and this was not statistically significant (p>0.05), while it had a high correlation as well as a statistically significant with associated phoria (r = 0.89). There was a negative correlation between Y-intercept and fixation disparity slope of vertical fixation disparity (r = -0.33). It showed a low relationship but statistically valuable (p>0.05). As a result of regression analysis, the stereopsis was changed as 7.631" if vertical fixation disparity changes 1' and the vertical fixation disparity changed as 0.017' if stereopsis changes 1', and the change was statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusions: The study shows that there is a low correlation between stereopsis and vertical fixation disparity, and it is difficult to determine stereopsis only using vertical fixation disparity. Therefore, it suggests other factors above vertical fixation disparity have greater influence on stereopsis.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary vitamin levels and stocking densities on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and blood characteristics in growing pigs. A $2{\times}3$ factorial (two vitamin levels, three regimens of stocking densities) arrangement was utilized with 96 pigs ($23.10{\pm}0.95$ kg initial body weight and 63 d of age) for 36 d. The pigs were allocated to pens with different stocking density (0.64, 0.48, and 0.38 $m^2/pig$, respectively). The diets used in this study were a normal diet (based on NRC) and a high level of vitamin diet (2-fold higher than normal diet). The ADG and ADFI of pigs were decreased as the stocking density increased (p = 0.03 and p = 0.01, respectively). The G/F of pigs was 5% lower in the high vitamin treatment (p = 0.03) as compared with the control treatment. The apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of DM and N digestibility was negatively affected by the high level of vitamin in diets (p = 0.05 and p = 0.04, respectively). Moreover, a significant and negative effect on the ATTD of N was detected in the large groups (linear, p = 0.02). Blood cortisol concentration was increased with increasing stocking density (linear, p = 0.05), and was decreased by high level of vitamin (p = 0.04) at the end of this experiment. Stocking density also caused a linear reduction in WBC concentration (p = 0.05). Our data indicated that the principal effect of stocking density was not reliant on dietary vitamin levels. In conclusion, results indicated that doubling the vitamin supplementation did not improve the growth performance of pigs in high density. However, the blood cortisol concentration was decreased but the ATTD of N digestibility was impaired by high level of vitamin diet.

  • The LT-MBE (low temperature molecular beam epitaxy) allows to dope GaAs with Mn over its solubility limit. A 75 urn thick GaMnAs layers are grown on a low temperature grown LT-GaAs buffer layer at a substrate temperature of $260^{\circ}C$ by varying Mn contents ranged from 0.03 to 0.05. The typical growth rate for GaMnAs layer is fixed at 0.97 $\mu\textrm{m}$/h and the V/III ratio is varied from 25 to 34. The electrical and magnetic properties are investigated by Hall effect and superconducting quantum interference device(SQUID) measurements, respectively. Double crystal X-ray diffraction(DCXRD) is also performed to investigate the crystallinity of GaMnAs layers. The $T_{c}$ of the $Ga_{l-x}$ /$Mn_{x}$ As films grown by LT-MBE are enhanced from 38 K to 65 K as x increases from 0.03 into 0.05 whereas the $T_{c}$ becomes lower to 45 K when the V/III ratio increases up to 34 at the same composition of x=0.05. This means that the ferromagnetic exchange coupling between Mn-ion and a hole is affected by the growth condition of the enhanced V/III ratio in which the excess-As and As-antisite defects may be easily incorporated into GaMnAs layer.
