Fixed connection is generally used for beam and column connections of concrete structures, but significant damages at the connection due to severe earthquakes have been reported. In order to reduce damages of the connection and improve seismic performance of the connection, several innovative connections have been suggested. One newly proposed connection type allows a rotation of the connection for applications in rotating or rocking beams, columns, and shear walls. Such structural elements would provide a nonlinear lateral force-displacement response since their contact depth developed during rotation is gradually reduced and the stress across the sections of the elements is non-linearly distributed around a contact area, which is called an elastic hinge region in the present study. The purpose of the present study is to define the elastic hinge region or length for the rocking columns, through investigating the cross-sectional stress distribution during their lateral behavior. Performing a finite element analysis (FEA), several parameters are considered including axial load levels (5% and 10% of nominal strength), different boundary conditions (confined-ends and cantilever types), and slenderness ratios (length/depth = 5, 7, 10). The FEA results showed that the elastic hinge length does not directly depend on the parameters considered, but it is governed by a contact depth only. The elastic hinge length started to develop after an opening state and increased non-linearly until a rocking point(pre-rocking). However, the length did not increase any more after the rocking point (post-rocking) and remained as a constant value. Half space model predicting the elastic hinge length is adapted and the results are compared with the numerical results.
The brief results of laboratory and field tests of yieldable steel arches are represented. The test supports were fabricated with three U-sectional beams which are 25.8 kg/m of Glocken profile. The structural analyses of semi-circular and arch supports were conducted to find out shape factor of U beam to be 1.35 and the location of 2nd plastic hinges. Load capacity of arch supports under crown loading were examined as a function of leg length. Yieldable characheristics of test supports were investigated with various bolting torque of connection part. Determination method of bolting torque were also studied. Finally, test supports were installed in-situ with torque of 21 kg .m, which showed a typical yielding procedure.

The missile for this study has shown different natural frequency characteristics depending on the test conditions; natural frequencies obtained from its flight test are higher than those in its ground test. It was found that the hinged joints connecting front airframe to rear one had the nonlinear stiffness and caused the missile to show very complex dynamic characteristics. The angular stiffness at hinged joints was calculated using 3D finite element analysis, and it was verified that there was a highly nonlinear relationship between angular stiffness and external load. Natural frequencies calculated considering the nonlinearity of angular stiffness were nearly the same as test results. Through this study, the dynamic characteristics of a missile having split airframes with hinged joints could be clearly identified and a way of maintaining its natural frequencies consistent was generated.

The identification of the dynamic properties of structural joints is important for predicting the dynamic behavior of assembled systems. However, the identification of the properties using analytical or experimental approaches is extremely difficult or even impossible. Several studies have proposed hybrid or synthesis methods that simultaneously used analytical and experimental approaches to identify the dynamic properties of a joint. However, among the many types of joints, only the bolt joint was treated as a practical example in these studies. In this study, for a simple assembly system comprising two plates and one hinge joint, a simple methodology involving the use of the static-based subpart analysis method to identify the dynamic properties is proposed. Finally, the proposed method is applied to a glove box in a passenger vehicle that includes hinge joints.
This paper deals with a fabrication method of composite hinge mechanisms for flapping-wing micro air vehicles. The fabrication process includes curing process of Graphite/Epoxyprepregs, laser cutting for high fabrication repeatability, laminating of Graphite/Epoxy prepregs with Kapton film which is used for flexure, and so on. The fabricated hinge mechanism was attached with PUMPS actuators and the measured flapping angle was $173^{\circ}$ when driving voltage was 300V 170Hz.

Generally, the steel rigid frame has been analyzed using finite element analysis tools. While many efforts have been poured into the understanding and accurate prediction for the nonlinear behavior of the columns and beam-columns connections, the base of the columns are modeled as simply hinged or fixed. However, the base of the steel columns practically is neither fixed not hinged. It behaves as semi-rigid. In this paper, the supports of the columns we modeled as semi-rigid and the importance of such approach in moment-resisting columns is evaluated. Two typical buildings designed by the US specification are modeled and analyzed by the finite element based on stiffness method and flexibility method. The column bases of three-story buildings are modeled as rotational springs with a varying degree of stiffness and strength that simulates the semi-rigidity of the base. Depending on the degree of stiffness and strength, the semi-rigidity varies from the hinged to the fixed. Buildings with semi-rigid column bases behaves similarly to the building with fixed bases. It has been numerically observed through the pushover and nonlinear time history analyses that the decrease of the stiffness of the column base induces the rotational demand on the int air beams. an increase of rotation demands on the first store connections and lead to a soft-story mechanists Due often to the construction and environmental effects, undesired reduction of column base stiffness may cause an increase of rotation demands on the first store connections and lead to a soft-story mechanism.

In this study, the seismic fragility curve according to the boundary conditions is created for a two-pylon concrete cable-stayed bridge, and the effect of the boundary conditions on the seismic fragility of the target bridge is evaluated. An analysis model for the target bridge is constructed using Midas Civil, and a nonlinear time history analysis is performed by applying the fiber element, concrete and rebar material models. The boundary conditions between the pylon and the stiffened girder are classified into four types: rigid, unconstrained, pot bearing, and seismic isolation bearing, and the seismic fragility curves are created for each boundary condition. The plastic hinge section of the pylon, the connection part, and the cable are selected as weak members, and the earthquake vulnerability curve is created for them. As a result of the analysis, it is found that the seismic isolation bearing model shows the lowest damage probability in the pylon and the connection part, and the seismic fragility of the cable is less affected by the boundary conditions than other members.

This study presents a non -prismatic beam element for modeling the elastic and inelastic behavior of the steel beam, which has the post-Northridge connections in steel moment frames that are subjected to earthquake ground motions. The elastic stiffness matrix for non-prismatic members with reduced beam section (RES) connection is in the closed-form. The plasticity model is of a discrete type and is composed of a series of nonlinear hinges connected by rigid links. The hardening rules can model the inelastic behavior for monotonic and random cyclic loading, and the effects of local buckling. Verification and calibration of the model are presented in a companion paper.
This paper investigates the seismic behavior of a prefabricated composite column which is made by onsite connection of precast composite column segments to accelerate bridge construction. Quasi-static cyclic loading tests were performed on three prefabricated composite columns with different connection details to find their seismic capacity. Test results show that the onsite connections remains in elastic range and no slip is observed as designed in spite of plastic hinge formation at the column. The test results also indicate that the prefabricated composite column has better overall seismic capacity compared to a conventional reinforced concrete column with seismic details.

This study presents a non-prismatic beam element for modeling the elastic and inelastic behavior of steel beams, which have the post-Northridge(cover plate) connections in steel moment frames that are subjected to earthquake ground motions. The elastic stiffness matrix for non-prismatric members with increased beam section (IBS) connection is in the closed-form. The plasticity model is of a discrete type and is composed of a series of nonlinear hinges connected by rigid links. The hardening rules can model the inelastic behavior for monotonic and random cyclic loading, and the effects of local buckling. Moreover the determination of yield surfaces, stiffness parameters, and hardening (or softening) rule parameters for IBS beam element were described. Analytical results of the IBS beam element show good correlation with test data and FEM results.
