  • The Korean film market has rapidly achieved an international scale, and this has led to a need for decision-making based on analytical methods that are more precise and appropriate. In this modern era, a highly advanced information environment can provide an overwhelming amount of data that is generated in real time, and this data must be properly handled and analyzed in order to extract useful information. In particular, the preprocessing of large data, which is the most time-consuming step, should be done in a reasonable amount of time. In this paper, we investigated a big data preprocessing method for predicting movie box office success. We analyzed the movie data characteristics for specialized preprocessing methods, and used the Hadoop MapReduce framework. The experimental results showed that the preprocessing methods using big data techniques are more effective than existing methods.

  • Japanese "Manga" (Comics) and animation films are very popular among the audiences from many countries. Japan is creating various new cultural contents through comics and animation films, and it became one of the important economic growth driver. Japanese famous comic Naruto, which had been successfully concluded recently, have achieved great success and gained popularity globally. One of the reasons for the success of Naruto is the various characters in the comic. In, there are various characters with different personalities and characteristics. Characters are important factors that makes the story stands out and delivers the story. Furthermore, the characters in the story often reflect the author's psychology and mind. By analyzing the characters' behavior and personalities, the audience can follow the story more interestingly, and understand the author's message better. The objective of this study is to analyze the Naruto's main characters' personality and characteristics through enneagram. Furthermore, the report explains the success of by analyzing the different behaviors that results from different personalities, and the relationship between the characters.

  • Recently, big data is positioning as a keyword in the academic circles. And usefulness of big data is carried into government, a local public body and enterprise as well as academic circles. Also they are endeavoring to obtain useful information in big data. This research mainly deals with analyses of box office success or failure of films using text mining. For data, it used a portal site 'D' and film review data, grade point average and the number of screens gained from the Korean Film Commission. The purpose of this paper is to propose a model to predict whether a film is success or not using these data. As a result of analysis, the correct classification rate by the prediction model method proposed in this paper is obtained 95.74%.

  • The objective of this study is to examine the effectiveness of signals and advancing our understanding of the relationship between ratings and audience decisions based on the signaling theory. Though many studies argue that information asymmetry affects decision making, few studies have examined two key signaling factors: its potential to have multiple sources and the effect of time on its effectiveness. This study examined how experts' and the general audience's ratings affect decision making. We also considered change patterns in ratings to explore how time effect on ratings affect selection behavior. We tested our hypotheses using the latent growth model based on signaling theory and behavior approaches. The results show that a general audience's ratings is perceived as more credible than are those of experts and that audience members are significantly affected by upward patterns in ratings. The findings suggest that general audiences play a critical role as signal providers. Thus, market participants such as producers should pay more attention to the general audience's ratings in order to increase revenues. They should also consider the time effect of signaling, such as upward trends in ratings.

  • On the 855 pure Korean commercial fictional movies, excluding diversity films, released in Korea from 2004 to August 2017, I conducted deciles distribution analysis of box office performance of those movies and average box office performance of directors, producers and lead actors who involved in making them. Deciles distribution analysis of average box office performance might be helpful to predict their next box office performance of newly produced Korean movies and to evaluate their contribution to box office performance. In baseball, the various index such as winning rate, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, stolen base percentage, battling average, earned run average is used for predicting and reviewing of professional players. In this study, I evaluate the script's narrative quality by the indirect method of insight and judgment of creative manpower involved in making the movies. For the more productive prediction, direct statistical analysis method on the narrative of the script needs to develop. Time series analysis is required to evaluate the rise and fall of creative manpower and network analysis is also necessary to see the interaction among creative people.

A Study of Japanese Performers in 1915' KEIJO ENGEIKAN : Theater, Performance, and Nakalai ToSui (1915년 경성 연예관의 일본공연단 연구 - 극장, 퍼포먼스, 나카라이 도수이(半井桃水))

  • In the early 20th century, Japan built theaters to take possession of colonial culture while establishing the Imperial University, libraries, and museums to accumulate and spread the knowledge of "imperial" Japan. Many different genres made a hit in theaters including theatrical troupes, theatrical companies, and motion pictures. One of the various features of expositions was "spectacles" or unusual events. They were integrated with a national festival in celebration of "5th anniversary of political commencement." In 1915, the longest hit series in Keijo (Seoul) was the dance performance by professional Japanese beauties and entertainers, whose songs delivered the legitimacy of governance. This study focused on the performance in the space of "cultural" spread called theaters, thus examining the "imperial" cultural waves they were in charge of. The study also focused on the tensional relations of Hierarchie along those cultural borders. The performance at the theater Engeikan(演芸館) in 1915 was especially an epoch-making event in the Japanese theatrical community of Keijo (Seoul): first, it marked the emergence of large-scale performance hall called Engeikan(演芸館); secondly, the performance kept its ongoing, stable streak for about 50 days; and it led to the appearance of leading troupes including Geijutuza(芸術座), which put on a show in Keijo (Seoul) in November, 1915. The study examined the issues of theater Engeikan(演芸館) performance in 1915 involving the art company, performance genre, and audience composition, showed that there was the coexistence of entertainment and governance through cultural ruling while securing amusement and entertainment, and found it was accompanied by the organized operation of "Keijo Sponsorship Council(京城協贊會)" which brought together the cultural capabilities of Japanese people living in Joseon. The performance at theater Engeikan(演芸館) in Keijo (Seoul) in 1915 fully reflected the issues involving the tensional relations between different artistic genres, the competing relations between the subjects of performance, and the cultural power.

Social Network Analysis(SNA)-Based Korean Film Producer-Director-Actor Network Analysis : Focusing on Films Released Between 2013 and 2019 (한국영화 제작자·감독·배우 네트워크 분석: 2013~2019년 개봉작 중심으로)

  • This study selected 127 powerful Korean film producers, directors, and actors whose stable audience drawing power has been proven over the past seven years from 2013 to 2019, and viewed their network through social network analysis(SNA) to explain their power structure. It also explained the changes compared to the results of previous studies conducted on box office hits from 1998 to 2012. The producers who showed the highest audience drawing power over the past seven years were KANG Hae-jung, JANG Won-seok, LEE Eugene, HAN Jae-duk. BONG Joon-ho, KIM Yong-hwa, and RYOO Seung-wan as directors and SONG Kang-ho, HA Jung-woo, and HWANG Jung-min as actors were confirmed to exhibit the most stable audience drawing power. Meanwhile, the network formed by the 127 leading producers, filmmakers, and actors was analyzed based on closeness/ degree/eigenvector/betwenness centrality, and the result discovered a strong network involving JANG Won-seok, HAN Jae-duk, CHO Jin-woong, Don LEE, and HWANG Jung-min. This study is meaningful in that it included producers, the position which has never been discussed in previous local studies to analyze the network influencing star casting, and selected accurate box office hits by checking whether the concerned films actually reached break-even point rather than simply relying on the number of audiences or total revenue they garnered. Nonetheless, it left a hole to be filled in that it did not include the role of the management companies in the network. Therefore, a relevant follow-up discussion would be needed.

An Exploratory Study on the Critics's Reviews Reported in the Press : Focusing on the Relationship Between Opinion Quality of Film Reviews and Box Office Performance (언론에 보도된 전문가 영화 리뷰에 관한 연구 : 영화 리뷰의 품질과 흥행성과의 관계를 중심으로)

  • This study tried to explore the contents of film critics' reviews reported in the press. Based on fifty nine Korean movies with over 100,000 audience in 2017, this study collected 1113 reviews from fifty five movies with the exception of four without reviews. This study focused on the correlation between film's overall quality and four evaluation items such as directing, acting, story, and the visual. Examining the difference in the report timing of the review, the length of the review, and the intensity of the opinion, this study also analyzed the relationship between the internal aspects of reviews and box office performance. According to the results, the valence of critics' reviews was generally positive. Looking at the difference of reporting time, this valence was higher in the week before release than in the release week of film. The evaluation items of reviews were highly covered both before movie release and in the opening week. These were significantly declined in the second week of release. In the relationship between the number of reviews by each movie and box office performance, a positive correlation was found.
