  • The new chelating resins, XAD-2, 4, 16-TAC and XAD-2, 4, 16-TAO were synthesized by Amberlite XAD-2, XAD-4, and XAD-16 macroreticular resins with 2-(2-thiazolylazo)-p-cresol(TAC) and 4-(2-thiazolylazo)orcinol(TAO) as functional groups and were characterized by elemental analysis and FT-IR spectrometry. It was found that the content of functional group in chelating resin was 0.60mmol/g in XAD-16-TAC and 0.68mmol/g in XAD-16-TAO respectively. The chelating resins were stable in acidic and alkaline solution and can be reused over 10 times. The sorption behavior of some metalions to two chelating resins was investigated by batch method, which included batch equilibrium, effect of pH, coexisting ions and masking agent. For the optimum condition of sorption, the time required for equilibrium was about 1 hour and optimum pH was 5. In the presence of anions such as ${SO_4}^{2-}$ and $CH_3COO^-$, the sorption of U(VI) ion was slightly reduced but other anions such as $Cl^-$ and $NO{_3}^-$ revealed no interference effect. Also, sorption capacity of U(VI) ion was decreased by addition of $CO{_3}^{2-}$ ion because of complex formation of $[UO_2(CO_3)_3]^{4-}$, but alkali metals and alkali earth metals including Na(I), K(I), Mg(II), and Ca(II) were not affected for the sorption extent. Masking agent, NTA showed better separation efficiency of U(VI) ion from coexisting metal ions such as Th(IV), Zr(IV), Hf(IV), Cu(II), Cd(II), Pb(II), Ni(II), Zn(II) and Mn(II) than EDTA, CDTA.

  • In this study, factors affecting the adsorption reaction for the separation/recovery of V and W using Lewatit monoplus MP 600, a strong basic anion exchange resin, from the leachate obtained through the soda roasting-water leaching process from the spent SCR DeNOX catalyst investigated and the adsorption mechanism was discussed based on the results. In the case of the mixed solution of V and W, both ions showed a high adsorption ratio at pH 2-6, but the adsorption of W was greatly reduced at pH 8. In the adsorption isothermal experiment, both V and W were fitted well at the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, and the reaction kinetics were fitted well at pseudo-second-order. As a result of conducting an adsorption experiment by adjusting the pH with H2SO4 to remove Si, which inhibits the adsorption of V and W from the leachate, the lowest W adsorption ratio was shown at pH 8.5. Desorption of W was hardly achieved in strongly acidic solutions, and desorption of V was well performed in both strongly acidic and strongly basic solutions.

  • Adsorption behaviors of Ni(II) ions were investigated using amorphous alumina as adsorbent. In the adsorption kinetic study, it was observed that Ni(II) ions were bound to the alumina surface in two adsorption stages, the rapid and slow adsorption stages. The rapid adsorption proceeded within 1 hr, thereafter the slow adsorption occurred. The results of adsorption isotherm experiments showed that the Ni(II) adsorption obeyed the Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm, and that the adsorption enhanced with increasing pH. The change in ionic strength did not exhibit a conspicuous trend in Ni(II) adsorption, thereby suggesting that the adsorption occurs through surface complexation rather than electrostatic interactions. The amounts of adsorption were measured with varying pH at three different Ni(II) concentrations under the condition of constant ionic strength, showing that with increasing Ni(II) concentration, the percentage of adsorption decreased and the adsorption edge was shifted to a higher pH value.

  • This study accessed the adsorption characteristics of the nine nitrosamine species on coal-based granular activated carbon (GAC). The breakthrough appeared first for NDMA and sequentially for NMOR, NPYR, NMEA, NDPA, NDEA, and NPIP. On the other hand, NDBA and NDPHA were not detected in the treated effluent for the operation period. The maximum adsorption capacity (X/M) for the seven nitrosamine species with apparent breakthrough points ranged from $27.5{\mu}g/g$ (for NDMA) to $671.0{\mu}g/g$ (for NPIP). Carbon usage rate (CUR) for NDMA was 1.07 g/day, 13.4 times higher than that for NPIP (0.08 g/day). The X/M values for the seven nitrosamine species were fitted well with a linear regression ($r^2$ = 0.94) by their octanol-water partitioning coefficient ($K_{ow}$).

  • The purpose of this study was to develop EM media for water treatment and to remove nitrogen and phosphorus which cause water algae boom in water system. The ideal mixing ratio of raw material such as clay: zeolite: vermiculite: activated carbon for manufacturing the EM media was 10: 2.5: 0.1: 2, and the calcination temperature was $700^{\circ}C$. The comparison of the physical properties of manufactures using distilled water and EM activated liquid as the material mixture are as follows. Porosity and density of EM media were 39.98 % and $1.13kg/m^3$, adsorption efficiencies of nitrogen and phosphorus were 69.3 % and 38.9 %. In contrast, porosity and density of distilled water media were 37.80 % and $1.11kg/m^3$, and adsorption efficiencies of nitrogen and phosphorus were 62.5 % and 37.8 %. The adsorption rate of nitrogen and phosphorus in the EM media was higher than that of the distilled water made one by 6.8 % and 1.1 %, respectively. The adsorption characteristics of the media to nitrogen and phosphorus could be expressed by the Freudlich adsorption isotherm. The change of calcination time did not affect the adsorption efficiency of phosphorus and nitrogen when EM media was formed, but it was considered that it affects the strength of media. Nitrogen removal efficiency was the best record in 4 hours of calcination time and 3 hours of calcination time in phosphorus removal efficiency.

  • Among various ammonium salts and metal ammine chlorides used as solid materials for the sources of ammonia with solid SCR for lean NOx reduction, magnesium ammine chloride was taken up for study in this paper because of its ease of handling and safety. Lab-scale synthetic method of magnesium ammine chloride were studied for different durations, temperatures, and pressures with proper ammonia gas charged, as a respect of ammonia gas adsorption rate(%). To understand material characteristics for lab-made magnesium ammine chloride, DA, IC, FT-IR, XRD and SDT analyses were performed using the published data available in literature. From the analytical results, the water content in the lab-made magnesium ammine chloride can be determined. A new test procedure for water removal was proposed, by which the adsorption rate of lab-made sample was found to be approximately 100%.

  • This study attempts to capture the low level carbon dioxide from indoor spaces using a granular activated carbon (WSC-470) which was modified with primary monoethanolamine. Adsorption capacity of the prepared adsorbents was evaluated for pure $CO_2$ flow and 3000 ppm as a function of MEA concentration and solvents such as distilled water, ethanol and methanol. The AC based adsorbents then were characterized in terms of pore structure by BET and chemical functionalities by XPS. While high concentration of MEA reduced specific surface area, porosity and micro pores, nitrogen content which can enhance the surface basicity was increased. The maximum adsorption capacity decreased comparing to the initial AC pellets, whilst the potential of selective adsorption amount at low level $CO_2$ was increased at 45% (0.73 mmol/g).

  • The characteristics of phosphate desorption on kaolinite was studied by batch adsorptiondesorption experiments. Desorption procedure was carried out through sequential extraction method at pH 4. The phosphorous contents were measured using UV-VIS-IR spectrophotometer with 820 nm wavelength. The adsorption-desorption reaction of P on kaolinite was irreversible, and most of adsorbed P on kaolinite were not easily dissolved to aqueous solution, but may might be fixed on kaolinite surface. The desorption isotherms were well fitted with the Freundlich and Temkin equations in the case of short reaction and long reaction time, respectively. The desorption reaction was divided into the early fast reaction and the later slow reaction. The percentage of desorption generally decreased with increasing adsorbed P concentration and increasing desorption reaction time.

  • This study was designed to investigate the dynamic behaviors of phages against Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium ATCC 19585 (STWT), S. Typhimurium KCCM 40253 (STKCCM), ciprofloxacin-induced S. Typhimurium ATCC 19585 strains (STCIP), and S. Typhimurium CCARM 8009 (STCCARM). Phages, including PBST-10, PBST-13, PBST-32, PBST-35, P-22, and P-22 B1 had narrow host ranges. The adsorption rates of all phages ranged from 47 to 85%, 58 to 95%, and 61 to 93%, respectively, against STWT, STKCCM, and STCIP, while the lowest adsorption rates ranged from 14 to 36% against STCCARM. The phage burst sizes were from 43 to 350, 37 to 530, 66 to 500, and 24 to 500 plaque-forming units (PFUs) per infected STWT, STKCCM, STCIP, and STCCARM, respectively. The STCIP strain was effectively inhibited by all phages at the early of incubation period. These results provide useful information for better understanding the phage behaviors against antibiotic-resistant and antibiotic-sensitive pathogens.
