  • The Hognjesa granitic rocks can be subdivided into biotite granitic gneiss and microcline- perthite granitic gneiss according to their mineralogy and textures, which change gradationally each other. They consist mainly of biotite, muscovite, chlorite, microcline, plagioclase, perthite and quartz accompanied with sillimanite, garnet, and tourmaline in places. The replacement and/or alteration phenomena and relationships of coexisting minerals suggest that the granitic gneisses might be formed by regional metamorphism of upper amphibolite facies and granitization by partial melting accompanied to the regional metamorphism, and again at later effected by regional metamorphism of epidote-amphibolite or greenschist facies. The biotite, muscovite and chlorite formed during these metamorphism, show nearly similar chemical compositions, respectively, regardless to the rock phases and stages of formation. They show relatively stable chemical equilibrium between coexisting pairs. The granitization which formed granitic gneisses may be seemed to occur regionally by partial melting accompanied to the first regional metamorphism.

  • In Gimcheon area of the central Yeongnam massif granite gneiss occurrs with intercalated biotite gneiss at xenolith or restite. In order to understand the evolution of the central Yeongnam massif, it is essential to have absolute age information, but not many age data are available yet. Furthermore the previous age determinations from the study area are not compatible with the outcrop relationship. In this study we determined chemical ages from the zircon grains. We obtained ages of $1970\pm$ 78(l$\sigma$)Ma from the granite gneiss, $1814\pm$77(l$\sigma$)Ma from the outer rim of a rounded zircon and 1973$\pm$97(l$\sigma$)Ma from a longish zircon, both from the biotite gneiss. These ages seem to indicate the timing of granitic magma intrusion and subsequent metamorphism. Ages of $2954\pm$ 158($l\sigma$)Ma, 2440$\pm$58(l$\sigma$)Ma, and 2219$\pm$36($l\sigma$)Ma obtained from zoned core of the rounded zircon grain from the biotite gneiss suggest various geological events before such metamorphism of the biotite gneiss. Ages in the range of 1450~1670 Ma observed in zircons of both gniesses suggest later metamorphism that the granite gneiss and the biotite gneiss experienced together. The chemical age determination by electron probe micro-analyzer of this study utilized 1$\mu\textrm{m}$ beam diameter and it seems to be a very useful age determination from the zircons with complex growth history because of superior spatial resolution.

  • Four road tunnels, which consists of biotite gneiss and granite gneiss and shows a similar geological conditions, were selected in this study. Laboratory and field tests, the rock mass rating for the four tunnels were conducted. A regression analysis was performed to find out the correlations of test results. It was proposed an equation of reduction factor which can assess the deformation modulus for biotite gneiss and granite gneiss. It was also found that there was a close correlation between Q and RQD in four tunnels according to the analysis between RMR and Q, RMR and RQD, Q and RQD and laboratory and field tests.

  • Here we discuss a geochemical characterisitc of rare earth element (REE) pattern of a Precambrain leucogranitic gneiss at Imweon, Gangwon Province, Korea. The outcrop includes biotite gneiss xenolith. The leucocratic granite gneiss contacting with biotite gneiss is pegmatitic. However, there is no evidence of contact metamorphism between biotite gneiss and leucocratic-pegmatitic granite gneiss. The leucocratic granite gneiss shows a specific phenomenon of M-type (convex curved) tetrad effect in chondrite-normalized REE patterns with large negative Eu anomaly. The degree of REE tetrad effect in the leucocratic-pegmatitic granitec gneiss is weak and shows partly W-type (concave curved) tetrad effect. The Eu anomaly of leucocratic granite gneiss has close relationship with the degree of tetrad effect as well as Ca/Sr ratio. Our results suggest that the REE tetrad effect from the leucocratic granite gneiss should be formed during differentiation process of granitic magma. We also confirmed that the weathering might affect Eu or Ce anomaly rather than the formation of REE tetrad effect in granitic rock.

  • The Sobeaksan Gneiss Complex in the Punggi area is composed of mainly mignatitic gneiss, porphyroblastic gneiss, garnet granitic gneiss and biotitie granitic gneiss. Metamorphic grade increase gradually from the amphibolite facies of northwestern part to the granulite facies of southwestern part in the study area. Representative mineral assemblage in the amphibolite facies is biotite-muscovite-K-feldspar-plagioclase$\pm$garnet$\pm$epidote, needle shape or fibrous sillimanite occur in transitional zone from the amphibolite facies to the granulite facies. In the granulite facies, the garnet-Opx granulite shows garnet-orthopyroxene-biotite-plagioclase, the metabasite shows clinopyroxene-plagioclase$\pm$hornblende$\pm$orthopyroxene$\pm$garnet and the migmatitic gneiss shows garnet-biotite-sillimanite-cordierite$\pm$spinel as representative mineral assemblage. Retrograde metamorphism after the granulite facies metamorphism made corindum and andalusite in the migmatitic gneiss and the thin layer garnet between clinopyroxene and plagioclase in the metabasites. The peak P-T conditions of the migmatitic gneiss and the garnet-Opx granulite are $916^{\circ}C$/6.6 kb and $826^{\circ}C$/6.3 kb, respectively. The P-T condition of biotite and plagioclase inclusion, which indicates the progressive condition of the granulie facies, within garnet is $866^{\circ}C$/7.5 kb and that of rim composition of garnet and biotite is $726^{\circ}C$/4.6 kb, which infer the clockwise P-T path of the granulite facies metamorphism. The temperatures caculated by the rim composition of garnet and biotite in the migmatitic gneiss and garnet granitic gneiss have a wide range of $556-741^{\circ}C$, which indicate that the retrograde metamorphism after the granulite facies metamorphism has effected differently. It is difficult to determine the P-T condition of the biotite granitic gneiss because less occurrence and higher spessartine content of garnet. The P-T condition of the thin layered garnet between clinopytoxene and plagioclase in the metabasite is $635-707^{\circ}C$/4.1-5.3 kb. This texture indicates the isobaric cooling(IBC) condition of the retrogressive metamorphism. As a result, the metamorphic evolution of the Punggi area has undergone the isobaric cooling after the granulite facies metamorphism which has undergone the clockwise P-T path.

  • The blastoporphyritic granite gneiss (BPGN) including much alkali-feldspar megacrysts occurs in Jiri mountains area, southwestern part of Sobaegsan massif, Korea. The BPGN is formed gneiss complexes with other gneisses in Precambrian. The BPGN was named as porphyroblastic gneiss with porphyroblasts of alkali-feldspar megacrysts by other researchers, but the BPGN includes of euhedral alkali-feldspars (microcline), and the boundary with the granitic gneiss represents sharp contact as intrusive relationship. The BPGN mainly composes of alkali-feldspar megacrysts, quartz, plagioclase, K-feldspar and biotite some almandine and accessary minerals are muscovite, chlorite, apatite, zircon and opaques. The alkali-feldspar is microcline with perthitic texture. An content of plagioclases show 30 to 40. Biotites occur two type, one is Brown biotite which shows compositional ranges of Mg/Fe+Mg ratios from 0.38 to 0.52, the other is Green Bt. which is retrograde product. Camels to be various sizes and shapes have composition of almandine with 73 to 80 mole percent, but represent retrogressive zoning from core (X$_{pyr}$: 15.9${\sim}$20.8) to rim (X$_{pyr}$:13.7${\sim}$15.9) to be evidence of retrograde metamorphism. Megacrysts of alkali-feldspar in the BPGN show rectangular shape of euhedral and some become ellipsoidal or spheroidal in shape and the average size up to 20 cm long. The megacryst includes of biotite, plagioclase and quartz, and rarely euhedral apatite as inclusions. In petrochemistry the BPGN represents granodiorite composition, characteristics of peraluminous S-type granitoid and calc-alkaline features.

  • Weathering profiles which were developed under a temperate, humid environment and relatively steep geography, show a thick saprolite and soil horiaon in the Precambrian granitic gneiss of the Yoogoo area. In the weathering profiles, secondary minerals such as interstratified biotite/vermiculite, tri- or di-octahedral vermiculite, halloysite, kaolinite, illite, smectite, gibsite and geothite were observed. Kaolinization of biotite is the most prevalent mechanism but vermiculitization is a minor from all ofweathering profiles. Biotite altered to B/V mixed layer-vermiculite, to illite and to halloysite, kaolinite and gibbsite. Halloysite is the most frequently observed weathering product of biotite in these profiles. Goethite is observed at the around or opened fissures of altered biotite. Tubular halloysite aggregates was fDrmed from dissolution-precipitation of plagioclase. The occurrence of halloysite aggregates is divided into a preferentially oriented type and a wrinkled one which were resulted from the dissolved type of plagioclase. Fe-bearing minerals have also been subjected to dissolution leaving the precipitation of geothite along dissolution voids. The profile of granitic gneiss is a typical weathering pattern showing a clay minerals increase toward the surface. Weathering of minerals were controlled by locally acidic and good-drainage environment, and formed a various and complicated secondary minerals in this study area.

  • Granitic gneiss containing biotite banded gneiss relict around the Daeheung talc deposit are widely distributed which were formed by regional metamorphism of both epidote-amphibolite and iater greenschist facies and granitization. They were derived from same silico-aluminous rocks of sedimentary origin. The mineral assemblages, which are common in the biotite banded gneiss, formed during regional metamorphisms, are survived in the granitic gneiss. The mineral assemblages of the latter greenschist facies may be formed retrogressively from the first epidote-amphibolite facies. The chemical compositions of biotite, muscovite, and chlorite, the important constituents of the gneisses, were controlled by the bulk composition, the chemical composition of the original mineral, and environment of the regional metamorphisms and granitization. The chemical equilibrium between coexisting'minerals, especially biotite and muscovite, is relatively well established, which was controlled mainly by tschermakitic and phengitic substitutions. Cholrite was formed mainly from either biotite or muscovite by retrogressive alteration or granitization, and have nearly similar chemical compositions regardless of the occurrences. The orientation trend of the foliation, joint and quartz vein developed in the gneisses was analyzed by equal area projection which the latter two show nearly identical trend in the strike and dip. This may suggest that the hydrothermal solution was introduced along joint during wet granitization.
