  • A mechanical pulsator is manufactured for study of combustion instabilities in a model chamber with impinging-jet injectors. Artificial disturbance is generated by the device and thereby, artificial instability can be examined experimentally. A sample F(fuel)-O(dxidizer)-O-F impinging-jet injector is adopted for the test. The model chamber was designed based on the methodologies proposed in the previous work regarding geometrical dimensions and operating conditions. Pressure fluctuation data, which is obtained from the dynamic pressure transducers installed in combustion chamber, is analyzed.

  • In this study, a comparison was conducted to verify the propellant isolation assembly of the Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter (KPLO). An engineering validation model (EVM) is being developed to simulate the flow of the flight model. Three factors were selected for comparison: the total pressure drop during propellant isolation assembly, the waterhammer by driving thruster valve, and the orifice set up for flow control and damping the waterhammer. The analysis results are compared with EVM test results. In the future, backup data to confirm the design will be established.

  • During natural aging, hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene(HTPB) propellant undergoes a series of slow physico-chemical degradation reactions. By using accelerated ageing conditions it is possible to simulate the material behavior at different time-temperatures focusing on in-service conditions. Aging behaviors of HTPB propellant are investigated using HFC(heat flow calorimeter), a universal technique for measuring the rate of slow chemical and physical processes in long-term storage.

  • In this study improvement of transient analysis model, KOTRAC, for the passive reactor has been performed. In the KOTRAC, mixture drift flux model is adopted to simulate thermal hydraulic behavior, which can simulate ECCS injection in the passive plant. However, there is a difficulty to handle complete phase separation phenomena due to the near-zero density, which may occur in the pressurizer surge line or horizontal flow paths. In this study, a couple of model changes to over-come Courant limit feilure has been examined. One of key features is to substitute flow distribution parameters with Ishii's correlation. Corrected results are nil compared to those of RELAP/MOD3 analysis.

  • The atomization of a liquid into multiple droplets has many important industrial applications, including the atomization of fuels in combustion processes and coating of surfaces and particles. Ultrasonic atomizing nozzle has a transducer that receives electrical input in the form of a high frequency signal from a power generator and converts that into mechanical energy at the same frequency. Liquid is atomized into a fine mist spray using high frequency sound vibrations. In coating applications, the unpressurized, low-velocity spray reduces the amount of overspray significantly because the droplets tend to settle on the substrate, rather than bouncing off it. The spray can be controlled and shaped precisely by entraining the slow-moving spray in an ancillary air stream using specialized types of spray-shaping equipment. The desired patterns of spray can be obtained using an air stream. To simulate the water mist behavior of an ultrasonic atomizing nozzle using an air stream, the Lagrangian dispersed phase model was employed using the commercial code FLUENT. The effects of the nozzle contraction shape, water droplet size and the pneumatic pressure drop on the spray characteristics were investigated to obtain the optimal condition for coating applications.

  • In order to find out the condition of flow in sewer pipes, this study investigated the characteristics of tractive force of sewage flow estimated using actual measured values of water level, velocity, and flowrate in sewers located at uppermost portion in a treatment area during dry weather periods. When the scene of sewage flow was taken by CCTV after cohesive and non-cohesive solids (tofu and sand) were put on the sewer invert, it was found that the solids could be flushed without significant interruption. In sewer with slope of 0.00319, the frequency exceeding the minimum tractive force of sewage during a weekday was zero, while it was 10 per day with slope of 0.00603. During the week of the field observation, the event to exceed the minimum tractive force occurred once, suggesting that sewer odor would potentially increase. Maximum tractive force in sewer with steep slope was 2.9-3.1 N/㎡, but with gentle slope it decreased to 1.6-1.7N/㎡. It was also observed that the interval of time maintained below the criterion of minimum tractive force increased, during weekends compared to weekdays and for the sewage including non-cohesive particles which could enter combined sewers during a storm period. This study found that the sewer sediments formed by direct feces input into sewers, through sewer pipes which were designed meeting the standard sewer design criteria, could be flushed without staying as deposited solids state for a long time.

  • The unexpected wind over the Mt. Hwawang on 9 February 2009 was deadly when many spectators were watching a traditional event to burn dried grasses and the fire went out of control due to the wind. We analyzed the fatal wind based on wind flow simulations over a digitized complex terrain of the mountain with a localized heating area using a three dimensional computational fluid dynamics model, CFD_NIMR_SNU (Computational Fluid Dynamics_National Institute of Meteorological Research_Seoul National University). Three levels of fire intensity were simulated: no fire, $300^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$ of surface temperature at the site on fire. The surface heat accelerated vertical wind speed by as much as $0.7\;m\;s^{-1}$ (for $300^{\circ}C$) and $1.1\;m\;s^{-1}$ (for $600^{\circ}C$) at the center of the fire. Turbulent kinetic energy was increased by the heat itself and by the increased mechanical force, which in turn was generated by the thermal convection. The heating together with the complex terrain and strong boundary wind induced the unexpected high wind conditions with turbulence at the mountain. The CFD_NIMR_SNU model provided valuable analysis data to understand the consequences of the fatal mountain fire. It is suggested that the place of fire was calm at the time of the fire setting due to the elevated terrain of the windward side. The suppression of wind was easily reversed when there was fire, which caused updraft of hot air by the fire and the strong boundary wind. The strong boundary wind in conjunction with the fire event caused the strong turbulence, resulting in many fire casualties. The model can be utilized in turbulence forecasting over a small area due to surface fire in conjunction with a mesoscale weather model to help fire prevention at the field.

  • The trend of poisoning of reforming catalyst along with the position of anodic catalyst bed was studied. Keeping the conditions that steam to carbon ratio was 2.5, operating voltage was 0.75 V, current density was $140mA/cm^2$, the unit cell was operated during 24 hrs at a steady state. And then the cell was stopped, the catalysts packed in the position of inlet, middle and outlet were sampled individually and then the amount of carbon, Li and K poisoned were analysed. After 100 hrs operated, the catalysts at the same positions were analysed at the same manner. The result of this experiment was as followings. After 24 hrs operated, the poisoning amounts of Li and K in the catalyst were 0.27 wt% at inlet, 0.23 wt% at middle and the highest value 1.59 wt% at outlet. After 100 hrs, the amount of poisoning is the highest in the catalyst packed at the inlet of unit cell. The performance simulation of unit cell explained these trends of poisoning catalysts. The simulation told that the catalyst in the region of the inlet of unit cell treated the 90% of initial methane flow rate and the highest electrochemical reaction happened in this region. So the catalysts of this region were the most poisoned with carbon, Li and K and also the rate of poisoning is faster than that of the catalyst at other regions. The temperature at the region of outlet of unit cell was $30^{\circ}C$ higher than that of other regions, so more Li, and K vaporized than at other regions and little reforming reaction at this region made the catalysts poisoning rate low.

  • Korea's traditional Sokgasans(a artificial rock mountain) are elements of our excellent rock garden culture that have been inherited from Goryeo Era to Chosun Era. This study is to analyze how the culture of Sokgasans in the Goryeo and the Chosun Eras has been has been representated the implications and inherited in terms of historical aspects. Korea's traditional Sokgasans, which were created in the Goryeo Era by imitating the landscape of mountain ranges, created a small artificial mountain made of oddly shaped stones, imitating a real mountain. People in those days would reproduce mountain landscapes through a miniaturization technique, enjoying the pleasure of deep mountains and valleys as they lay on their gardens at home while having an aesthetic experience of the landscape that supported their emotional stability and healing. The inner side of these Sokgasan was intended to represent the world of the Taoist hermit with miraculous powers in terms of utopia, expressing 5 Ak mountains(Song Shan, Taishan, Huashan, Heng Shan and Hyeong Shan) where the mountain of 3 Gods(Youngju, Bongrae and Bangjang) wishing for 'No aging and living long' and idea of the Taoist hermit with miraculous powers are concentrated beyond the beauty of form in the landscape itself. In addition, people could refine their minds by practicing the Confucianist lesson of loving the mountain and water by watching the Sokgasan and imitating 'Famous mountains and lakes" from China and they had been changed and advanced embracing various implications in inner side of Sokgasans. Korea's traditional Sokgasans not only made it possible for people to experience aesthetic landscapes as a practical element of the scenery but also had deep symbolic implications that go beyond their formal beauty and were sublimated as an ideational space of unlimited imagination.

  • When the conventional IPD (inter-poly-dielctrics) layer with ONO(oxide-nitride-oxide) structure was used in the Flash EEPROM cell, its data retention characteristics were significanfly degraded because the top oxide of the ONO layer was etched off due to the cleaning process used in the gate oxidation process for the peripheral MOSFETs. When the IPD layer with the ONON(oxide-nitride-oxide-nitride) was used there, however, its data retention characteristics were much improved because the top nitride of the ONON layer protected the top oxide from being etched in the cleaning process. For the modelling of the data retention characteristics of the Flash EEPROM cell with the ONON IPD layer, the decrease of the threshold voltage cue to the charge loss during the bake was here given by the empirical relation ${\Delta}V_t\; = \;{\beta}t^me^{-ea/kT}$ and the values of the ${\beta}$=184.7, m=0.224, Ea=0.31 eV were obtained with the experimental measurements. The activation energy of 0.31eV implies that the decrease of the threshold voltage by the back was dur to the movement of the trapped electrons inside the inter-oxide nitride layer. On the other hand, the results of the computer simulation using the model were found to be well consistent with the results of the electrical measurements when the thermal budget of the bake was not high. However, the latter was larger then the former in the case of the high thermal budger, This seems to be due to the leakage current generated by the extraction of the electrons with the bake which were injected into the inter-oxide niride later and were trapped there during the programming, and played the role to prevent the leakage current. To prevent the generation of the leakage current, it is required that the inter-oxide nitride layer and the top oxide layer be made as thin and as thick as possible, respectively.
