  • The purposes of this study is to analyze gender difference in predictors of mobile phone dependency in youth. The analysis is performed with third-year panel survey data of middle school 1st grade students from Korean Child-Youth Panel Survey. The results are as follows. First, the female students' mobile phone dependency is more serious than the male students' mobile phone dependency. Second, while the identified male gender predictors are aggression, parental abuse, aprosexia, study activity and social withdrawal, the identified female gender predictors are depression, aprosexia, aggression, study activity and social withdrawal. Based on these results, theoretical and practical implications in planning of prevention or intervention of mobile phone dependency are proposed.

  • This study aimed to examine the mediating effects of social withdrawal between adolescents' mobile phone dependence and the sense of community, and to secure the evidence data for adolescents' mobile phone dependence intervention. Among the 7th year data for the 4th grade students in the Korean Children & Youth Panel Survey(KCYPS), 1,979 students were included. The results showed that mobile phone dependence had a significant effect on the decrease in the sense of community and influenced the sense of community through social withdrawal. These results imply that positive intervention to reduce social withdrawal is needed and it can improve the sense of community in youth. Also, when we deal with weakening in the sense of community, we should consider convergent intervention in psychological and social aspects which deal with dependency, social withdrawal, and the sense of community.

  • The purpose of the present study was to examine the causal relationship between aggression and mobile phone dependency among high school students and to test the mediating effect of self-esteem, and to draw out implications in order to encourage proper use of mobile phone. In this paper, we proposed a research model between aggression, self-esteem and mobile phone dependency. The present study analyzed the fourth, fifth, and sixth wave data from KCYPS 2010, using the structural equation modeling. The primary results were as follows. First, the effect of high school students' aggression on mobile phone dependency was not significant. Second, high school students' aggression had a significantly negative effect on self-esteem. Third, high school students' self-esteem had a significantly positive effect on mobile phone dependency. Fourth, high school students' self-esteem could be a significant mediator between aggression and mobile phone dependency. In conclusion, theoretical and practical suggestions were discussed in order to solve the problem of adolescents' mobile phone dependency.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effects of mobile phone dependency in the relationship between parenting attitude and juvenile delinquency. This study used the secondary data from the $1^{st}$, $2^{nd}$ and $3^{rd}$ waves of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey(2010, KCYPS). The data of 2,086 middle school students were analyzed by utilizing Structural Equation Model(SEM). The results are as follows. First, positive and negative parenting attitudes had no direct effects on juvenile delinquency, while positive parenting attitudes had significantly decreased adolescents' mobile phone dependency. In addition, negative parenting attitudes had positive effects on adolescents' mobile phone delinquency. Second, mobile phone dependency was fully mediated by parenting attitudes and juvenile delinquency. On the basis of these results of study, policy and practice implications were discussed to reduce juvenile delinquency by improving parenting attitudes.

  • The study explores how academic strain, unhappiness, and mobile phone dependency among adolescents have changed over time. And we conducted the longitudinal and complex analysis on the influence of academic strain on unhappiness and mobile phone dependency in order to search the ways to prevent a vicious circle among them. We used general strain theory as a conceptual research frame and analysed the data of 1,589 respondents of the 2nd~4th Korean Children and Youth Panel with latent growth modeling. It was found that the levels of academic strain, unhappiness, and mobile phone dependency among adolescents were linearly increased across time. Academic strain initial status positively affected unhappiness initial status and both the initial status and change rate of mobile phone dependency. The change rate of unhappiness positively affected that of mobile phone dependency. Academic strain change rate positively influenced that of mobile phone dependency mediated by unhappiness change rate. We provided useful implications to academic activities, negative emotions, and mobile phone dependency for adolescents and suggested future studies about reasons of the changes of those variables.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of adolescents' mobile phone dependency on depression and aggression and to identify mediating effects of parenting attitudes and peer relationships. This study used data from the 4th and 5th waves of 2010 KCYPS (Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey). Structural Equation Model(SEM) was conducted to examine the mediating effects of parenting attitudes and peer relationships. The results showed that adolescents' mobile phone dependency had positive effects on depression and aggression. In addition, the relationship between adolescents' mobile phone dependency and depression was partially mediated by parenting attitudes and peer relationships. The relationship between adolescents' mobile phone dependency and aggression was also partially mediated by parenting attitudes and peer relationships. Based on these findings, further suggestions are provided to reduce adolescents' depression and aggression by decreasing mobile phone dependency and improving parenting attitudes and peer relationships.

  • This study examined the mediating effect of depression on the relationship between over-control parenting styles and mobile phone dependency among children. The 5th-year longitudinal data from the Korean Children & Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) were collected from 4th grade elementary school students. The data were analyzed by the structural equation modeling and bootstrapping. The results of this study were as follows. First, there is a positive path from over-control parenting styles to depression, from depression to mobile phone dependency, and from over-control parenting styles to mobile phone dependency. Second, depression had a mediating effect on the association between over-control parenting styles and mobile phone dependency. Based on these results, more study of elementary school students' reliance on cell phones is needed.

To verify the mediating effect of Adolescent' Dependence on mobile phone in the relationship between Parent's Neglecting Attitude by Adolescents and the Adult Media Immersion, Baron & Kenny's mediating effect analysis method was conducted and the analytical findings are shown below. According to this study, first of all, more the Parent's Neglecting Attitude rise to rise the Adult Media Immersion. Second, the Adolescent's Dependence on mobile phone partly mediates the Adult Media Immersion. The practical implications of this results are below : First, we need to make a policy and legal effort to improve the relationship between parents and children. • A mobile phone usage survey was administered to a nationwide sample of 3,617 adolescents. Major motivations of mobile phone usage were mobility/real-time connection, show off, information acquisition, entertainment, dialogue, schedule management, and advice. Maintenance of social relationship with the peer group was most important in mobile phone use. Motivations influenced mobile phone dependency : show off had the strongest influence on anxiety/paranoia followed by dialogue, entertainment, mobility/real-time connection. Without their phones, fashion-oriented adolescents showed mobile phone dependency and anxiety. Stronger dialogue and entertainment motivations were associated with weaker real time connection motivation and stronger paranoia symptoms. Mobile phone dependent adolescents had lower grades, showed lack of attention, had little dialogue with their parents and showed withdrawal from the peer group.
