  • In a recent construction industry, cable supported structures such as a cable-stayed bridge or space stadium have been increasingly constructed according to rapidly upgrade their related technologies. Generally stay cables as a critical member need to be rearranged for being satisfied with design tension forces. In this purpose, a vibration method has been applied to estimate the tension forces exerted on existing stay cables. In this study, cable vibration tests were tarried out to evaluate the cable tension forces comparing with theoretical and practical formulas. Using the measured frequencies obtained from free vibration and Impulsive tests, an accuracy of the estimated tension forces is confirmed according to use the first single mode only or higher multiple modes.

  • In this study, practical verifications for an advanced C.I.P(Cast in Place Pile) construction method were carried out. The structural characteristics of the method is to attach an angular joint in the steel-casing. This joint plays an important role in boring vertically, connected pile to pile, and protects the permeation of the ground water. For verifications, experimental research and numerical analysis were performed. In the experimental research, two model-tests were set up with the real scale steel-casing. One is to examine the leakage in the joint of piles and the other is to compare earth pressures in the front and the joint, respectively. In addition, 3 point bending test and compressive loading test were carried out and numerical analysis was performed to simulate the loading test. As a result of model-tests, the leakage in the pile joints was not shown up to 300 KPa of water pressure and stress concentration in the joint is out of the question. From the results of bending and compressive test, it was found that the new advanced C.I.P method is more convenient and superior than the conventional method.

  • A series of model tests was performed to find the characteristics of lateral behavior of single rigid pile. This paper shows the results of model tests on the lateral behavior of single rigid driven pile in non-homogeneous(two layered) Nak-Dong River sands. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of the ratio of lower layer thickness to embedded pile length, the coefficient ratio of the subgrade reaction and the pile construction conditions(driven & embedded piles) on the characteristics of lateral behavior of single pile. The results of model tests show that the lateral behavior in non-homogeneous soil depends upon drop energy considerably, that is, in the case of H/L=0.75, as the drop energy increases three times the decrease percentage increases about 2.12 times. In the driven pile with non-homogeneous soil of $E_{h1}/E_{h2}=5.56$, the effect of upper layer with large stiffness on the decrease of lateral deflection is remarkably smaller than embedded pile. In non-homogeneous soil, the maximum bending moment of driven pile is in the range of 100 132% in comparison with embedded pile. The reason is that the stiffness of soil around pile increases with drop vibration and so the pile behavior is similar to the flexible pile behavior by means of the increase of relative stiffness of pile, In this paper, the experimental equations for lateral load and H/L on $y_D/y_E \; & \; MBM_D/MBM_E$ are suggested from model tests.

  • To overcome weak and brittle tensile characteristics of concrete, many studies have been conducted on fiber reinforced concrete (FRC). Recently, high performance fiber reinforced cementitious composites (HPFRCC), which shows strain hardening behavior, has been actively investigated. However, most of the studies focused on the material behavior of HPFRCC itself. Only a few studies have been conducted on the tensile behavior of HPFRCC with steel reinforcement. Therefore, a tension stiffening test for HPFRCC members has been conducted in this study in order to investigate the effect of a reinforcing bar on the tensile behavior of HPFRCC. Tensile stress-strain relationship of HPFRCC has been derived from the tests. The HPFRCC resisted tensile stress continuously from the first cracking to the yield of reinforcing bar. Through the comparison with the tensile behavior of HPFRCC members without a reinforcement, it was shown the tensile strength and capacity of HPFRCC were reduced due to the combined effect of the high shrinkage of HPFRCC, restraining effect of steel reinforcement, and the strain hardening behavior of HPFRCC. It is expected that the tension stiffening test results can be useful for an application of HPFRCC with steel reinforcement as structural members.

  • Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) has been developed to overcome the low tensile strengths and brittleness of conventional concrete. Considering that UHPC, owing to its composition and the use of steel fibers, develops a compressive strength of 180 MPa as well as high stiffness, the top flange of the steel girder may be superfluous in the composite beam combining a slab made of UHPC and the steel girder. In such composite beam, the steel girder takes the form of an inverted-T shaped structure without top flange in which the studs needed for the composition of the steel girder with the UHPC slab are disposed in the web of the steel girder. This study investigates experimentally and analytically the flexural behavior of this new type of composite beam to propose details like stud spacing and slab thickness for further design recommendations. To that goal, eight composite beams with varying stud spacing and slab thickness were fabricated and tested. The test results indicated that stud spacing running from 100 mm to 2 to 3 times the slab thickness can be recommended. In view of the relative characteristic slip limit of Eurocode-4, the results showed that the composite beam developed ductile behavior. Moreover, except for the members with thin slab and large stud spacing, most of the specimens exhibited results different to those predicted by AASHTO LRFD and Eurocode-4 because of the high performance developed by UHPC.

  • T-shaped walls have different strength, stiffness and ductility in the two opposite directions parallel to the web when subjected to horizontal in-plane loads. When the flange is in tension, the extent that the flange reinforcement contributes to the flexural strength will be subjected to shear-lag effect. Because of this shear-lag effect, the flange may not participate fully in the action with the web, and the effective flange width is needed for predicting the actual strength and stiffness of structures. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the effective flange width and actual strength of the T-shaped wall with Korean code specified detailing of the wall web. Three specimens were tested with cyclic lateral loading applied at top of the wall. A constant axial load of approximately 0.1f$\_$ck/$.$A$\_$g/ is maintained during the testing. Test results show that the effective flange width increases with increasing drift level, such that the entire overhanging flange of h/3 is effective at the maximum strength level. Therefore, the use of PCI or KBC(Korean Building Code) value of h/10 is unconservative with respect to detailing at the wall web boundary.

  • In this study, the flexural/shear behavior characteristics of perfobond FRP-concrete composite beams using an FRP plate with perforated webs as formwork and reinforcement are analyzed through an analytical method. Compared with the existing experimental results, we have proved its usefulness and use it in future practice. When the nonlinearity is very large in this case, the nonlinear finite element analysis by an explicit method will be effective. The concrete damage plasticity (CDP) model adopted in this study is considered to be able to adequately simulate the nonlinear behavior of concrete, and the determination of several variable factors required in the model is compared with the experimental results and values used in the study. This recommendation will require review and adjustment for more diverse cases. The effect of the perfobond of the composite beam with perforated web is considered to be somewhat effective in terms of securing the initial stiffness, but in the case of the apex, it is considered that the cross-sectional loss and the effect of improving the bonding force should be properly arranged. The contact problem, such as slipping of the FRP plate and concrete, is considered to be one of the reasons that the initial stiffness is slightly larger than the test result, and the slightly difference from the experimental results is attributed to the separation problem between concrete and FRP after the peak.

  • A model for the effective moment of inertia $I_{\epsilon}$ as expressed in Branson's equation, in which reduction of the flexural rigidity of RC beams due to cracking are aptly taken into accoun,t is presented. However, KCI Code isn`t considered tension stiffening as it is in debonding of reinforcing bar. Therefore, this equation need to set up suitable to our design Code. The experimental work consisted of casting and testing a total of 6 simply supported reinforced concrete beams and a total of 4 continuos reinforced concrete beams under two point concentrated loads. Main parameters are concrete strength, coverage, bond between concrete and reinforcing bars, are known as have an effect on deflection and tension stiffening. Every test beams had the same $250{\times}350$mm rectangular section, with a simply supported clear span of 4,400 mm and a continuos clear span of 6,500 mm. Comparison of the test results with values obtained using the KCI Code equation of the effective moment of inertia showed a noticeable difference.
