This was a secondary data analysis study using the 2015 National Health and Nutrition Survey and the study subjects included 1,484 individuals aged 65 and over. The results showed that depression and stress perception in young-old were higher than old-old's and the suicidal ideation rate of old-old was higher than young-old's. In case of eating patterns, 'poor eating' in old-old was higher than young old's. Regression analysis showed that middle-intensity physical activity and eating patterns were associated with mental health of the elderly. Based on the results, it is necessary to develop a differentiated nursing intervention program suitable for the elderly by age.

  • This study examined the health status and relative factors of 468 people of the latter stage of more than 75-year-old in 2011 the Korean National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey. The subjective health status were influenced significantly by sex(OR=0.456, 95%CI=0.257-0.805), occupation(OR=1.437, 95%CI=0.963-2.149), spouse(OR=0.673, 95%CI=0.443 -1.022), degree of stress(OR=0.476, 95% CI=0.309-0.730), depression(OR=0.410, 95% CI=0.238-0.704), subjective oral status(OR=1.874, 95% CI=1.332-2.643), smoking(OR=0.738, 95% CI= 0.523-1.039), drinking(OR=1.251, 95% CI=1.017-1.540), and waking practice(OR=1.698, 95% CI=1.188 -2.431). The results suggest that health education of active participations and publicity policies should be established and help improve the subjective health status in the latter stage of a 75-year-old.

  • This study was performed to investigate the factors which impact on the health-related quality of life of young-old(65-69 yr), old-old(70-79 yr), and oldest-old(80 yr or above) women in vulnerable elderly received home care service from public health centers in B city. The data were collected from 383 elderly women using structured questionnaires from September to November, 2010. Multiple regression with the SPSS WIN 18.0 program were used to analyze the data. There were statistically significant differences among young-old, old-old, and oldest-old women regarding the health-related quality of life, life satisfaction, cognitive function, frail condition. The models including life satisfaction, frail condition, cognitive function, perceived health status, number of chronic diseases were explained variance of the health-related quality of life elderly women differently like 42.8% of young-old, 28.9% of old-old, and 31.5% of oldest-old. Finally, frail condition and life satisfaction were predictors in explaining the level of health-related quality of life among vulnerable old women regardless of age. Based on the findings of the study, health promotion programs should be developed to improve health-related quality of life of vulnerable aged women according to age differences.

Nine interviews were conducted using Sch$\ddot{u}$tze's 'autobiographical-narrative interview.' Interview data collected were analyzed following Rosenthal's 'analysis of narrative-biographical interview.' How individual historical experiences have impacted the elderly's lifes mostly indicated a difference in the way they experienced such historical events. While their pro-Japanese activities and direct, historical experiences during the Japanese colonial rule and their direct, historical experiences as veterans of the Korean War have influenced their life as individualized, their indirect, historical experiences on the Japanese colonial rule and Korean War have manifested themselves as a potential life severed from the historical past at the same time. Based on the understanding of how the elderly's individual, historical experiences have exerted an influence on their life, finally, some suggestions were addressed as regards welfare practices for the elderly.

  • This study investigates the relationship between muscular strengths and gait characteristics of the elderly. Totally, 107 subjects, aged 65 to 85 years, participated in this study. Researchers measured muscle strengths (grip force, toe grip force, gluteus medius, and gluteus maximus forces) and walking characteristics (walking speed, cadence, step length, single leg support, and double legs support). Dynamometers and inertial measurement unit-based shoe systems were used for measuring muscular strength and gait characteristics, respectively. No significant difference was observed in strengths and walking characteristics between the young elders (YE, 65-74 years) and the old elders (OE, 75-85 years). For each age, muscular strength significantly correlated with some gait parameters. Forces of gluteus medius and gluteus maximus muscles showed better significant correlations between some gait parameters for all age groups, as compared to grip force and toe grip force. Regression coefficients between walking speed and grip force did not vary with age. We conclude that muscular strengths in OE better explained the gait characteristics than in YE subjects. Even though grip strength is an easily measured variable for senior fitness test, forces of gluteus medius and gluteus maximus muscles are more meaningful for understanding the walking characteristics of elderly people.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the oral health status and oral health behavior and identify the factors related to the oral health status by age-specific groups in vulnerable elderly individuals. Methods: We used data from the 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The differences in the oral health status and oral health behavior by age-specific groups were analyzed using complex sample chi-square tests and a generalized linear model. The relationship between the oral health status and oral health behavior by age-specific groups was analyzed using a complex samples general linear model. Results: The DMFT index of the young-old elderly was 10.65±0.60, and that of the old-old elderly was 12.78±0.72, which was higher. The condition of the mandibular prosthesis was more common in the old-old elderly, and there was a statistically significant difference (p<0.05). The DMFT index in the old-old elderly was found to be higher as the average number of brushings per day decreased, and no oral examination was performed. Conclusions: The vulnerable elderly themselves are interested in maintaining their own health, and the government needs to undertake efforts to reduce the medical blind spots by supporting institutional and environmental conditions so that health care services can be provided to the vulnerable elderly.
