  • This study investigates the mechanical behavior on trough rib to crossbeam joint in orthotropic steel plate decks, specially emphasizing on the effect of diaphragm inside trough rib on the fatigue behavior of slit by static and fatigue tests. In particular, the effects of diaphragm on in-plane stress and out-of-plane stress, stress concentration, propagation of fatigue cracks at the silt are studied. With the result of experiment and numerical analysis, we have estimated the fatigue strength using the nominal stress and hot-sport stress. The details with diaphragm have occurred about 50% stress reduction at trough rib part of trough rib to crossbeam joint than the detail without diaphragm, however, the lower parts of crossbeam have occurred much more stress. Initial crack size or slit have an considerable influence on the propagation of fatigue cracks due to V-notch. The fatigue strength category of the details without diaphragm has higher value than fatigue limit, whereas that of the details with diaphragm is estimated lower than fatigue limit.

  • Vibration characteristics which are typical in a cracked rotor can be utilized for detection of crack. The changing trend of harmonics at the second harmonic resonant speed according to the crack depth and the unbalance orientation has been discussed. To characterize the vibration depending on crack orientation, the unbalance and gravitational responses of the cracked rotor are calculated. An algorithm for crack orientation identification is also introduced. A trial mass is attached step by step with even angle interval along a certain circumference, and then the synchronous and second horizontal harmonic compenents of vibration are measured and curve-fitted using least square method. Numerical simulations using this method show good results.

  • This study examined the effect of transverse reinforcement and compressive stress on the shear friction performance at the shear interface intersecting two structural elements with various concrete types. From the prepared 12 push-off test specimens, various characteristics at the interface were measured as follows: crack propagation, shear load-relative slip relationship, initial shear cracking strength, ultimate shear friction strength, and shear transfer capacity of transverse reinforcement. The configuration of transverse reinforcement and compressive strength of concrete insignificantly influenced the amount of relative slippage at the shear friction plane. With the increase of applied compressive stress, the shear friction capacity of concrete tended to increase proportionally, whereas the shear transfer capacity of transverse reinforcement decreased, which was insignificantly affected by the configuration type of transverse reinforcement. The empirical equations of AASHTO-LRFD and Mattock underestimate the shear friction strength of concrete, whereas Hwang and Yang model provides better reliability, indicating that the mean and standard deviation of the ratios between measured shear strengths and predictions are 1.02 and 0.23, respectively.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate features of transverse crack occurrence and propagation in continuously reinforced concrete pavement(CRCP) when subjected to environmental loading. The finite element model of CRCP was developed and the element removal method was implemented to predict the crack propagation process. To investigate the effect of the type of environmental loading on the CRCP behavior and cracking aspects, the following three different cases were considered: (1) the temperature gradient between top and bottom of the slab does not vary and the constant temperature drop throughout the depth occurs; (2) the temperature at the slab bottom does not vary and the temperature gradient increases; and (3) the temperature between the mid-depth and the bottom of the slab is the same and does not vary and the temperature at the top decreases. The analysis results showed that the crack occurrence and propagation through the depth of the slab in CRCP were significantly affected by the type of environmental loading. The changes in stress distribution and displacements during the crack occurrence and propagation process could also be investigated.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the reduction effect of shrinkage reducing agent for drying shrinkage induced cracking and suggest the method of controlling the cracking in concrete box culvert for power transmission. Based on drying shrinkage cracking mechanism, it is necessary to perform the numerical analysis, which involves shrinkage reducing effect of shrinkage reducing agent. From the numerical results, it is found that cracking behavior for longitudinal direction and transverse direction due to differential drying shrinkage of box culvert can occur and the experimental observation of concrete cracks support the numerical predictions. The shrinkage reducing agent reduced the concrete cracking by 40~50%, which shows the methodology of controlling of drying shrinkage cracks in box culverts in real construction site.
