  • We fabricate a polarization-independent dielectric multilayer thin-film diffraction grating for a spectral-beam-combining (SBC) system with a simple grating structure and low aspect ratio. Due to the refractive index and thickness error of the manufactured thin films, the diffraction efficiency of the fabricated diffraction grating was lower than that of the design. The causes of the errors were analyzed, and it was confirmed through simulation that diffraction efficiency could be compensated through an additional coating on the manufactured diffraction grating. As a result of sputtering an additional Ta2O5 layer on a fabricated diffraction grating, the diffraction efficiency was corrected and a maximum 91.7% of polarization-independent diffraction efficiency was obtained.

  • To investigate influence of the incident beams which have the truncated Gaussian amplitude and of the shapes of bump on read-out signal is an optical disc, and the point spread function on bump, the scalar diffraction theory is used in this paper. We consider the truncated Gaussian amplitudes which are $\sigma$=0, 0.5, 1.5, and 2.5, the height of bump which is given by $n{\Delta}_0={\lambda}/4$, and the phase height of bump which is then given by ${\Phi}_0={\pi}$. We also consider the shapes of the bump which are a rectangular shape, a frustoconical shape, and a conical shape. It is shown that as the truncation of incident beam reduces the radius of central spot on bump decreases, the maximum value of read-out signal increases, and that the size of bump decreases. From these results, we get better read-out signal and the reduced cross-talk in optical disc when the truncation of incident beam reduces. Therefore a laser beam having less truncated Gaussian amplitude may useful for an actual optical disc.

  • By using finite ray-tracing and curve fitting, a numerical method to determine the non-paraxial pupil function of a high-NA objective is presented. MTF degradations caused by the non-paraxial diffraction effect are analyzed for on-axial imaging of a far-infrared objective and aberration-free ellipsoidal mirror system. The ellipsoidal mirror system has the same paraxial specifications as the far-infrared objective.

  • We have developed an algorithm of designing the binary phase gratings for even-numbered spot arrays which selectively cancel or suppress the unwanted even orders. Principles and properties which control the speed of the optimization algorithm are presented, and the results of the designed gratings are illustrated up to $1{\times}2에서 1\times}20$ array.

  • When diffraction by arbitrary two-dimensional surface-relief dielectric gratings is analyzed using the rigorous three-dimensional vector coupled-wave analysis, it is found that the matrix eigenvalue problem pertaining to the analysis can always be simplified to that for a matrix which has the dimension of a quarter of the original, so that computing time and memory requirements for computer may be greatly reduced. However this kind of simplification can not be obtained in the case of volume diffraction gratings. tings.

  • We generated a nondiffracting beam and investigated its intensity profile on propagation. We first obtained an annular output beam from Nd:YAG laser with a negative branch unstable ring resonator and, using a 1m focal length lens, we generated a Bessel- Gauss beam. The inner radius of the annular output beam was 2.57 mm and the ring width was 0.145 mm. The intensity profile of the nondiffracting beam did not show any appreciable diffraction up to 33 m distance from the focal lens. This result was compared with the theory.

  • We propose an extended additional layer method (EALM) of calculating the coupling coefficient of arbitrary shaped diffraction gratings. In EALM, to determine the unperturbed field distribtution, a grating region is replaced by a new uniform layer whose dielectric constant is the average value of the dielectric constant of a grating region in both longitudinal and transverse directions. Using this method, we calculate the coupling coefficient for a five-layer distributed feedback structure device with trapezoidal and triangular gratings. The validity of this method is established by comparing the results calculated by partitioning the grating region up to five uniform layers.

  • We present a null testing method fer aspheric surfaces, utilizing a phase-shifting diffraction grating interferometer along with a binary amplitude computer generated hologram (CGH). The binary amplitude CGH is designed to compensate for the wavefront between a point source and the aspheric surface under test. The fringe visibility of the grating interferometer is controlled easily by selecting suitable grating diffraction orders for the measurement and reference wavefronts or by optimizing the groove shape of the grating used. The binary amplitude CGH is designed by numerical analysis of ray tracing and fabricated using e-beam lithography for autostigmatic testing. Experimental results of a large-scale aspheric mirror surface are discussed to verify the measurement performance of the proposed diffraction grating interferometer.

  • A modified quantizing method is introduced to teach single layer learning algorithm, which is implemented optically. The proposed optical system consists of input masks, holographic diffraction grating. LCD and CCD camera. The 2 dimensional interconnections between input neurons and output neurons are realized using holographic phase grating, which is fabricated for equal intensity distribution of diffraction orders. The two gray levels of LCD act as binary weights for each interconnection. The weights are compensated according to the learning algorithm in which the amount of weights to be compensated is determined by comparing the output patterns with target patterns. The learning process is iterated until the predetermined conditions are satisfied. Optical experiments are performed for two learning rates, 0.5 and 0.9 and the experimental results show that the proposed system is useful for optical neural networks.

  • Successive iteration of geometrical optics(GO)is suggested to calculate wedge diffraction fields. For a wedge and given source, the GO field may be obtained when the fields by the half spaces are found and the shadow regions are determined. Furthermore, one may caluculate the sources which are equivalent to the discontinuities of the GO field along the shadow boundaries and form a new wedge problem with the equivalent sources instead of the original one. It is shown that the field by the wedge and the equivalent sources equals to the diffraction field which GO requires for the complete solution. Also, it is shown that the field generated by the equivalent sources in the unbounded space, or the incident field in the new wedge problem, equls to the diffraction field approximated by the physical optics. The new wedge problem is solved here by another application of the GO to approximate the diffraction field and the result is compared with that by the physical optics. For a validity of the successive iteration of GO , infinite iteration of GO is performed analytically and the convergence is examined ofr conducting wedges, of which the exact solution is available.
