  • This study aims to investigate the effect of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic on negative emotions, such as anxiety, depression, fear, and stress, in Korean college students. The study recruited students from J University and conducted interviews across three time points, namely, March 2019, March 2020, and November 2020. For three time points, the participants responded to structured questions about situations they may have encountered and they were asked to summarize their responses. Repeated-measures ANOVAs were performed to examine whether differences exist in negative emotions between time points. Furthermore, polynomial trend analyses were conducted to examine resultant patterns over time. The results revealed that negative emotions displayed significant differences between time points. Moreover, trend analyses revealed a curvilinear pattern, which indicates that negative emotions increased and were then sustained. These findings suggest that negative emotions may continue to become prevalent among college students with the increased impacts of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The study discussed the need for psychological support systems, such as stress management and psychological counseling, for college students.

  • The concept of pilgrimage is a phenomenon that appears in almost every major religion. It is traditionally defined as religious travel to a sacred external place for spiritual purposes and introspection. However, there are many different relationships between pilgrimages and religious customs, including excursions through abstract dimensions and regular journeys such as annual holidays. Because modern pilgrimages are taken for a variety of reasons, they are not limited to faith-based historical locations. Thus, many scholars also perceive pilgrimages as an increasing part of the general industry of tourism. These journeys are now studied in a diverse range of fields (e.g., ethnography and tourism). In this way, pilgrimages have created a new market from an industrial perspective. This economic analysis has resulted in secular interest. Pilgrimages can now be taken by gil (walkways), which have gained tremendous popularity. Thus, religiosity and humanity as they are embraced through pilgrimages are now receiving outside influences. This study therefore is aimed at generating suggestions for developing the pilgrimage routes related to Kang Jeungsan (i.e., the Supreme God of Daesoon Jinrihoe). These proposed Jeungsan routes are not simply restricted to religious activities or nostalgia, nor are they exclusively concerned with encountering holiness. To realize this idea, it is necessary to reconsider the concept of a sacred space.

  • Among the cultural groups that increase South Korea's diversity, there are adolescents returning to Korea after their stay abroad. From 15 in-depth interviews with those who stayed abroad for longer than 5 years, 11 codes were generated. The codes were divided into two categories: "assets" when the multicultural experience served as resources for the returnees adapting to Korean culture successfully and "disadvantages" when the multiple experience remained fragmented for the returnees experiencing difficulty in re-acculturation. The distinguishing factors between the success and difficulty in re-acculturation appeared to be the cultural identity as Korean and the "openness to experience." The interwoven nature of personal and social factors stood out, along with the role of cultural identity throughout the process. Also the "openness to experience" as a strategy of integrating the past experiences is discussed, as well as the implications of the findings and the suggestions for future studies in the contemporary multicultural South Korea as a host society.

  • It has been assumed that the clarification of a message is a necessary element for successful communication. However, in the today's complicated and changing environment of business marketing media, it is shown that the clarification of the message of advertisement may inhibit the effectiveness of communication. This study was to examine what was effective communication in advertisement when the company, provoking the people's negative emotional response, needs to establish new identities such as the goals and the special fields of business. In particular, the study was to investigate what effect the advertising strategy of strategically emitting ambiguous messages makes on the consumer's recognition, emotional attitude, reliability, and attitude towards the company. It was hypothesized that an ambiguous message in an advertisement has an effect on the consumer's recognition, emotional attitude, reliability, and attitude towards the company. Three texts from the 'Imagination Praises' campaign of KT&G which has been in process since 2003 were systematically sampled and the survey was performed by the means of questionnaires made on the sample The results showed that the ambiguous message of advertising texts gained better responses on the consumer's attention, good impression, affirmation, memory, sympathy than the dear message and that the ambiguous message had an effect on the consumer's attitude towards the advertisement itself. Thus, it could be tentatively concluded that the ambiguous message could be more effective in recognition and recall to promote the changes of identities of the company having the people's unfavorable emotion. But there wasn't any evidence that an ambiguous message in an advertisement was more effective in terms of the consumer's emotional response, reliability, and attitude towards the company. From this, it could be inferred that the receiver had an uncomfortable, doubtful and negative attitude about the implicit expressive code contained in the message. In the future deeper qualitative studies can compensate for the limited explanation of this empirical study focused on statistical analyses.

  • The rapid aging of society has led to a surge in cognitive dysfunction in the elderly. As there is limited evidence for the development of dementia in medicine, a shift in focus on prevention strategies using bioactive compounds in food is required. This systematic review evaluated the effects of various bioactive compounds on age-associated cognitive decline. The literature was searched for terms related to bioactive compounds in cognitive decline and article selection was limited to clinical randomized controlled trials for a single bioactive compound. We identified 21 studies that evaluated the strength of the evidence. ω-3 fatty acids and vitamin B presented a strong evidence level, whereas vitamin D and E, anserine/carnosine, and chromium were defined as having moderate levels of evidence. ω-3 fatty acids relieved cognitive decline and reduced amyloid β-related protein accumulation. Vitamin B decreased homocysteine levels, which is accompanied by alleviation of cognitive function. In conclusion, ω-3 and vitamin B have the potential to improve age-associated cognitive decline.

  • Background: The cognitive function is impaired in patients with hypoxemic chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, there are conflicting results regarding the cognitive function in patients with non-hypoxemic COPD. COPD patients also have sleep disorders. This study examined the cognitive function in non-hypoxemic COPD patients, and nocturnal sleep was assessed in COPD patients with a cognitive dysfunction. Methods: Twenty-eight COPD patients (mean age, 70.7 years) with an oxygen saturation > 90%, and 33 healthy control subjects (mean age, 69.5 years) who had visited for a routine check-up were selected. The neurocognitive tests were performed using the Korean version of the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease (CERAD-K) Neuropsychological Battery. Results: The scores of the word list recall test (p=0.03) and the word list recognition test (p=0.006) in the COPD group were significantly lower than those in the control group. Nine patients showed a significantly impaired cognitive function. Seven of these underwent polysomnography, which revealed apnea-hypopnea indices ${\geq}$ five per hour in five patients. The median oxygen desaturation index and median limb movement index were 3.6/h and 38.6/h, respectively. Conclusion: These results suggest that the verbal memory function is impaired in non-hypoxemic COPD patients. Six out of seven COPD patients with an impaired cognitive function had sleep disorders of sleep apnea and/or periodic limb movements during sleep.
