Purpose: This study was done to identify the level of knowledge on and stress from delirium among recovery room nurses, and correlations between these factors. Methods: In this study, 125 nurses agreed to participate in the study were surveyed from October 8 to October 28, 2013. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, $Scheff{\grave{e}}$ test and Pearson correlation. Results: Average percentage of correct answers to questions about delirium was 81.9% and the mean score was 26.22 (${\pm}5.01$). The mean score for recovery room nurses' work stress from emergency delirium was 3.86 (${\pm}0.99$). Extent of knowledge on delirium significantly differed by age (F=15.017, p<.001), length of clinical experience (F=22.132, p<.001), length of recovery room experience (F=10.538, p<.001), education (F=3.312, p =.040), and marital status (t=4.107, p<.001). Stress from ED was significantly related to age (F=9.185, p<.001), clinical experience (F=7.077, p=.001), and marital status (t=-2.027, p =.045). Knowledge on delirium had a negative relationship with stress from delirium (r=-.514, p<.001). Conclusion: Results show that nurses gained knowledge of delirium from their own clinical experience indicating a need to develop educational programs to improve knowledge on delirium and plans to reduce stress from delirium for recovery room nurses.

Purpose: This study was aimed to specify roles of nurses from the anesthesia and recovery room by analyzing nursing activities as well as anesthesia nursing during surgery. Method: The objects were 12 RNs working in the recovery room of a university hospital located in Incheon. Self-report was performed by measuring stop-watch for five days from May 17th to May 21st in 2004. Research method was designed to record the time and frequency of the nursing activity from anesthesia and recovery room based on nurses' statement and other references for five days. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and t-test via SPSS Win 10.0 program. Result: Nursing activities in anesthesia recovery room were classified into two different characteristics such as direct and indirect nursing activity. The activities consisted of 11 direct nursing areas and 39 nursing activities in anesthesia preparation room. The indirect nursing was classified into 8 nursing areas and 32 nursing activities. The direct nursing was classified into 12 nursing areas and 55 nursing activity. Also, the indirect nursing was classified into 7 nursing areas and 21 nursing activities in recovery room. In terms of prevalence of nursing activities in the anesthesia preparation room, observation and cooperation of anesthesia was the most prevalent activity, drug and eqipment management the second prevalent, and drug administration the third. On the other hand, in the recovery room, the most prevalent activity was vital sign checking and observation, the second most prevalent activity informative activity, and the third body temperature control. Nursing activity time was recorded according to the nursing characteristics. In the anesthesia preparation room, the direct nursing spent for 8092.20 minutes was larger than the indirect nursing spent for 7198.50 minutes. Also, in the recovery room, the direct nursing spent for 2361.16 minutes was larger than the indirect nursing spent for 1134.13 minutes. 4. Nursing activity time was compared to duty shifts. In the anesthesia preparation room, the direct nursing was more prevalent on day shift and the indirect nursing was prevalent on evening shift. However, in the recovery room, both direct and indirect nursing activities were prevalent on day shift. Conclusion: The role of anesthesia and recovery room nurses was analysed according to the time, frequency, and its characteristics.
Purpose: This study was carried out to investigate the effect of a decrease in indwelling catheter size and preoperative education on bladder discomfort and nursing needs. The study was conducted on patients in the recovery room after their surgery. Methods: This study is a randomized control trial. Data were collected from September 2011 to February 2012 at a university hospital in Bundang, Korea. The sample consisted of 75 patients, excluding one patient from the experimental group 2. From among the patients that were sent to the ICU, 24 were in experimental group 1, 24 were in experimental group 2, and 27 were in the control group. Data were collected and analyzed using a chi-square test, t-test, and one-way ANOVA. Results: There were significant differences between the bladder discomfort experienced by patients in experimental group 1 and the control group, and experimental group 2 and the control group. Then nursing needs of the control group were higher than those of the experimental groups 1 and 2. Conclusion: The decrease in indwelling catheter size and preoperative nursing education is an effective nursing intervention in perioperative care.
Purpose: This study was to investigate the relationships among patient safety culture, safety competence and safety nursing activity among nurses in anesthetic and recovery rooms, and to identify the factors contributing to safety nursing activity. Methods: A descriptive correlational study was conducted. Participants were 156 nurses from 13 hospitals. Data were collected from February 11 to March 15th, 2019, and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation and multiple regression analysis with SPSS statistics 24.0 Program. Results: Safety nursing activity was significantly different in relation to nurses' level of education, position at work, clinical career, clinical career at anesthetic and recovery rooms, and work experience in patient safety. Safety nursing activity demonstrated a significant positive correlation with patient safety culture and patient safety competence. Factors contributing to safety nursing activity were patient safety knowledge, skill and attitude, clinical career, clinical career at anesthetic and recovery rooms, and the patient safety improvement system which explained 57.0% of total variance of safety nursing activity. Conclusion: To improve safety nursing activities at anesthetic and recovery rooms, it is necessary to develop patient safety programs with enhanced knowledge, skill and attitude to take patient safety as a top priority.
Purpose: This study aimed to derive considerations for the enactment of nursing law by analyzing the trends and social perceptions of nursing law mentioned in major daily newspapers, cafes, and blogs. Methods: Main texts and comments that included nursing law as a keyword were collected from major daily news and online postings from January 2021 to August 2022. The data collected through web crawling were analyzed using a TousFlux program used for big data analysis. Results: During the period of study, the awareness level around nursing law enactment increased. In particular, public concern over nursing law enactment intensified due to the two political parties' policy pledges related to nursing law in January 2022 and the failure to introduce the nursing law to the national assembly judiciary committee in May 2022. Except in December 2021, public perception of nursing law enactment was generally favorable, with public opinion tilting more in favor of than against enactment. Conclusion: Public opinion should be considered when drafting and implementing the nursing law to make it easier for the people to understand what the law constitutes. In addition, it is necessary to pay attention to and continuously promote the relationship between medical care and nursing in the nursing law system of developed nations. Lastly, nursing law enactment can enhance nurses' retention intention and provide a sense of efficacy to medical services.
Purpose: The study examined the effects of preoperative patient controlled analgesia (PCA) education on postoperative pain, knowledge of PCA, and attitude toward pain medication. Methods: The participants were patients who underwent surgery in H University Hospital,and were assigned to PCA group (experiment group, n=30) or the control group (n=30). Results: Knowledge of PCA and positive attitude toward pain medication were higher in the experiment group than in the control group. Postoperative pain scores in the experiment group were significantly lower than those in the control group at 48 and 72 hr after surgery, but there was no significant difference at 24 hr after surgery. The experiment group had more positive attitudes on the medication than the control group. Conclusions: Preoperative PCA education could be an effective nursing intervention for pain management of patients after surgery.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was done to identify the nursing care needs of patients in the recovery room. Method: The subjects in this study were 127 patients in a recovery room between 6/9/2001 and 24/9/2001. The instrument used for this study was the descriptive questionnaire developed by Shin Hyun-Jin (1999). The data was analysed by frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, and factor analysis using the SPSS program. Result: 1) Kaiser - Meyer -O1kin sample appropriateness was 799 and Bartlett's test of sphericity significant probability was .000. 2) The mean score for nursing care need of patients in the recovery room was $4.17{\pm}.51$ of a total possible score of 5. The score of nursing need for different parameters was as follows : Educational need ($4.31{\pm}.49$), physical need ($4.27{\pm}.47$), emotional need ($4.11{\pm}.52$), environmental need ($3.99{\pm}.56$). 3) Differences in the needs for nursing care according to the demographics were significant for gender, marital status, operation experience, and departments consulted. General characteristic variables significantly related to nursing need were as follows: Physical need significantly related to the departments consulted (F=2.23, p=.036). Educational need significantly related to the marital status (F=2.55. p=.012), departments consulted (F=2.30, p= 031). Emotional need significantly related to the marital status (F=2.22, p=.028). Environmental need significantly related to the gender (t=-2.44, p= .016), marital status (F=2.01, p= .046). operation experience (t=-1.99. p= .048). Conclusion: Nursing care needs of patients in the recovery room are significantly related to educational need, physical need, emotional need and environmental need. Intervention plans and program need to be developed to improve strategies to meet nursing needs of patients in the recovery room.
Purpose: This study was done to identify nursing interventions clinically applicable to relieve displeasure and anxiety of patients having an operation in which loud noise was unavoidable. Methods: Participants were 34 patients scheduled to have a total knee replacement. They were assigned to either the control (17 patients) or experimental (17 patients) group. Data were collected from September to November 2010. The instruments used for the survey included noise-control earplugs, a noise level meter (TES-1358) and a structured scale measuring degree of noise perception, displeasure and anxiety. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, standard deviation, $x^2$-test, and t-test with the SPSS WIN 18.0 program. Results: Hypothesis 1: 'The displeasure levels of the experimental group of patients wearing earplugs will be lower than the control group patients without earplugs' was accepted (t=-20.769, p<.001). Hypothesis 2: 'The anxiety levels of the experimental group of patients wearing earplugs will be lower than the control group patients without earplugs' was accepted (t=-6.298, p<.001). Conclusion: Based on these findings, the wearing of earplugs for patients having a surgical operation with loud noises is recommended as an effective nursing intervention to relieve patient displeasure and anxiety during their surgical operations.
Purpose: This study examined the effects of music therapy on pain, anxiety and length of stay of patients undergoing laparoscopic hysterectomy in the postanesthesia care unit (PACU). Methods: Sixty patients who received laparoscopic hysterectomy under general anesthesia from a PACU in a university hospital located in Cheonan city participated in this study. The experimental group (n=30) was offered the option to listen to their preferred music by using MP3 players and headphones for 30 minutes. The control group (n=30) received routine postoperative nursing care. Visual analogue scale was used to measure participants' pain and anxiety, length of stay in the PACU was examined by using their medical records. Data were collected from December 2013 to February 2014 and analyzed by descriptive statistics, ${\chi}^2$-test, Fisher's exact test, and independent t-test using SPSS version 21.0. Results: The result showed that the level of post-operative pain (t=2.44, p=.018), anxiety (t=2.37, p=.021), and the length of stay in PACU (t=3.06, p=.004) significantly decreased in the experimental group as compared to the control group. Conclusion: This study indicated that music therapy with the patients' preferred music showed positive effects. Therefore, it can be used as a therapeutic intervention for postoperative pain management of patients with laparoscopic hysterectomy.

Purpose:This study was conducted to identify the effects of theSemi-Fowler's position on post-operative recovery and pain for patients with laparoscopic abdominal surgery Methods: This study utilized a non-equivalent control group non-synchronized design to validate the effects of theSemi-Fowler's position. After IRB approval, 56 patients took part in this study, 29 in the experimental group and 27 in the control group. Consent was obtained from the participants. The Semi-Folwer's position was applied to experimental group and the supine position was applied to the control group for 24 hours after surgery. All data were reviewed retrospectively from April to June 2016. Collected data, frequency, percentage, average, standard deviation, chi-squared test, independent t-test and repeated measures ANOVA were conducted using SPSS 20.0. Results: There was no significant difference between the experimental and control group with regard to recovery outcomes; however, there was a significance differencebetween groups and among check times with regard to post operational pain. Conclusion:The results of this study provide information that will be usefulto the development of strategies for improving recovery outcomes and pain for laparoscopic operation patients.
