  • This study has examined the effect of bottom ash(BA) on the properties of low heat-blended cement(LHC) and concrete. A number of binders were prepared by the replacement of LHC with BA in range of 5$^{\sim}$20wt%. The results showed that the final setting time of cement paste were delayed when the BA replaced part of the cement. However, The heat of hydration increased narrowly with adding BA in a early hydration period. The results also showed the inclusion of BA at replacement levels of 5$^{\sim}$10wt% resulted in an increase in compressive strength of the specimens compared with that of the control concrete and improved a resistance of concrete against the sulfate and chlorine ion.

  • Marine bridges are readily deteriorated due to the exposure to marine environment. The concrete deterioration occurred by corrosion of steel in concrete is mainly relevant to chloride in seawater. Chloride ions penetrate through porous concrete, and then reach to the reinforcing steel, and finally corroded them. The corrosion by-products(rusts) increase the volume as much as 6 to 10 times of origin steel. this creates expanding pressure and tensile stress, which cause the structures cracking and spalling. Sometimes the rebar corrosion is accelerated, and then collapsed catastrophically. In order to prevent corrosion damage, it is important to understand well regarding the reason of concrete corrosion, the quantification of its damage, and protection method/system to stop or to mitigate the corrosion. In this study, slab specimens were fabricated to evaluate the effect of cathodic protection which was simulated to marine bridges, and/or port structures. Zn-mesh sacrificial anode has been applied as a chathodic protection system and accelerated test conditions, i.e. temperature and salt concentration have been used in this study.

  • Increasing of waste FRP (fiber reinforced plastics) has caused environmental problems. Recently, the technology of making fibers from waste FRP, which can be used to reinforce the concrete, was developed and the reinforced concretes were tested to study the structural performance. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the powder, obtained together with F-fiber from the waste FRP, on the compressive strength and the fire resistance performance as in the high strength concrete. Strength tests show that the use of recycled FRP powder does not reduce the compressive strength of high strength concrete if the volume fraction of FRP powder is less than 0.7%. Electric furnace test results also show that the use of recycled FRP powder may increase the fire resistance performance of high strength concrete significantly.

  • In this study, the mechanical properties of early-age concrete were evaluated by mixing the electric arc furnace oxidizing slag fine aggregate with 30% and 50% replacement ratio. Slump test, air content test and unit volume weight test were performed for fresh concrete, and compressive strength test and chloride penetration experiments were carried out in hardened concrete. The compressive strength increased up to 7 days of curing age with increasing replacement ratio of the electric furnace oxidizing slag, but the strength decreased to 90% level of OPC concrete at 28 days of age. Regarding the result of chloride penetration test, no significant differences from OPC concrete were evaluated, which shows a feasibility of application to concrete aggregate.

  • This study investigates the effects of moisture content on diffuse ultrasound to be applied for the evaluation of micro-structural damage in concrete subjected to various environmental conditions. We monitored diffuse wave parameters for concrete samples in process of water saturation for 5 days. Dried samples were immersed in a water bath, and the change of moisture content in concrete were estimated by measuring the change of mass. For the diffuse wave analysis, a frequency range of 500 kHz, which represents a scattering regime of ultrasound in concrete, was selected. The test results reveal that the ultrasonic diffusivity slightly changed, and the ultrasonic dissipation significantly increased by approximately 120% in the process of water saturation. Therefore, the moisture content in concrete should be considered for the evaluation of micro-structural damage using diffuse wave techniques.

  • Fine-size exposed aggregate portland cement concrete pavements (FEACP) have surface texture of exposed aggregate by removing upper 2$\sim$3mm mortar of surface of which curing is delayed by using delay-setting agent. FEACPs have advantages of maintaining low-noise and adequate skid-resistance level during the performance period than general portland cement concrete pavements. It is necessary to ensure the durability environmental loading to prevent unexpected distress during the service life of FEACP. In the process of curing, volume change accompanied change in by moisture and temperature could be an important cause of crack in concrete to construct for successful FEACP, The use of chloride containing deicer may accelerate defects of concrete pavement, such as crack and scaling. This study aim to evaluate environmental loading resistance of FEACP, based on the estimation of shrinkage-crack-control-capability by moisture evaporation and scaling by deicer in freeze-thaw reaction.

  • In the current concrete structure of the highway is still the major problem most of concrete deterioration caused by the freeze-thaw and deicing salt, which is of issues that are not completely resolved. In particular, a single freezing event does not cause much harm, durability of concrete under multi-deterioration environment by repeated freeze-thaw and deicing salt is rapidly degraded and reduce its service life. In this study, the exposure environmental condition according the regional highway points were established. The damage condition and chloride content of the concrete at general and severe environmental exposure condition were also investigated. In addition, the experimental test of chloride ion permeability, scaling resistant and freeze-thaw resistance were carried out to improve the durability of the mechanical placing concrete of subsidiary structure. According to the results of this study, in observation of concrete surface condition, the concrete exposed by severe environmental condition showed broad ranges of damage with high chloride contents. Meanwhile, the water-binder(W/B) ratio and the less water content, and fly ash concrete than the specified existing mix proportion is significantly improved the durability. Also, the optimal mix proportion derived for test is satisfied the strength and air contents, water-binder ratio, and durability criteria of concrete specifications, as well as service life seems greatly improved.

  • The present study investigates NOx-removal and sound-absorption performances of photocatalytic porous concrete prepared by various TiO2 application methods. Photocatalytic porous concrete samples were prepared by one of the following: 1) mechanically mixing TiO2 during casting; 2) mixing bottom ash aggregate pretreated with TiO2 during casting; and 3) spraying TiO2 solution to the normally fabricated porous concrete. The test results indicated that the mechanical mixing of TiO2 decreased the compressive strength as the added TiO2 content increased. The use of pretreated bottom ash aggregate reduced the porosity, yet the compressive strength of the concrete was similar to that measured from the former method. Porous concrete samples sprayed with the TiO2 solution exhibited enhanced compressive strength, while the porosity was analogous to those measured from other methods. The NOx-removal performance was the highest in the samples sprayed with the TiO2 solution, followed by the samples using pretreated bottom ash aggregate and mechanically mixed TiO2. The samples with mechanically mixed TiO2 identified a relationship between soundabsorption performance and porosity. However, no particular tendency was observable in the samples with other TiO2 application methods.

  • A set of foamed concrete specimens with different densities were prepared, and several microscopic techniques, such as scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) were used to characterize the foamed specimens. The pore and solid characteristics of the specimens at different ages were examined to investigate the effect of aging on the materials. The compressive strength and the thermal conductivity of the foamed specimens were also evaluated, and the relationship between the material characteristics and properties was integrated to identify the effect of density and aging on the material properties.

  • This study proposed mix proportions of early strength pavement concrete for large size area using calcium nitrate. Therefore, we used type III cement with calcium nitrate. Laboratory tests conducted to air content, slump loss test, setting time test, compressive strength test and flexural strength test. Our early strength pavement concrete mixture proportion proposed in this study for large size area attained the required compressive strength of 21 MPa and a flexural strength of 3.8 MPa, which allowed it to be opened to traffic within 8 hours. Based on test results, we suggested optimum mix proportions of early strength pavement concrete for large size area using calcium nitrate.
