  • This study was investigated to corrosion resistance of Cr-bearing rebars to macrocell corrosion caused by concrete with crack. Ten types of steel bars having different Cr contents were embedded in concretes with imitation crack. The corrosion resistance of the Cr-bearing rebar was examined by measuring half-cell potential, macrocell corrosion current, corrosion area and weight loss up to 105 cycles of salt spray testing. The results revealed that the Cr content required for corrosion resistance in a macrocell corrosion environment caused by chloride ion gap of $3kg/m^3$ was 9% or more. The corrosion-resisting performance of Cr-bearing rebar was particularly noticeable with a Cr content of 11% or more.

  • In the conventional model for the prediction of the railway environmental noise, one used an empirical formula of the total noise level at specific distances. Only a function of the distance to the source was also used to calculate the noise level near the railway bridges. However, the noise varies depending on the position of the receiver as well as the distance from the source especially at concrete bridges. In this paper, a noise propagation model in the railway concrete bridge was derived by considering the diffraction at the bridge deck and the ground effect and applying the ISO 9613-2 noise propagation model. We compared the predicted and measured values of environmental noise at a high-speed railway bridge, and it was confirmed that this prediction model gives relatively small errors.

  • Field tests with carbon fiber heating wire (CFHW) embedded inside concrete slab were performed to present the alternative heating material capable of avoid the adverse effects of traditional de-freezing salt on the structures and environment. The CFHW was inserted into the concrete slab in the shape of 'ㄷ' to improve the heat superposition and the temperature on the surface was measured using iButton. The results showed that the temperature where the CFHW's were faced with each other increased to above zero after 12-hour at outdoor air temperature of $-6^{\circ}C$. Comparatively, the temperature slightly increased where the CFHW was embedded on one side because the heat was not superimposed. Hence, it can be said that the CFHW is a suitable heating material to prevent the concrete road from being frozen.

  • The behavior of the fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) base under environmental loads was analyzed numerically as a fundamental study to develop a high structural and functional performance composite pavement system in which the base was formed using FRC and the asphalt or cement concrete surface was placed on it. A two-dimensional finite element model of the FRC base was developed and the sensitivity study was performed with the variables including slab thickness of base, thermal expansion coefficient, elastic modulus, and tensile and compressive strengths. The crack spacing and crack width were selected as representatives of the base behavior. The effects of the selected variables on the crack spacing and crack width were analyzed and the sensitive variables were determined. The results of this study could be useful to determine the optimal material properties of the FRC base for combining well with the surface materials.

  • As this study is to test fundamental properties of cement mortars using in Metakaolin. Recently concern is increasing for concrete durability because of an increase in the concrete structure exposed to bad environments. In the event that mineral admixture Added, microstructure will be fined, so durability can be good. Also, the study for new admixture is progressing expect that admixture widely used, for example, silica fume, fly-ash, and slag, etc. Therefore this study is making an experiment on fundamental properties of diversities sample curing at water, sea water, 10% sodium sulfate solution, and magnesium sulfate solution, to compare using for metakaolin with silica fume and fly-ash.

  • Corrosion of reinforcing steel is prohibited under normal condition by the alkalinity of the pore water in the concrete. But the probability of steel corrosion becomes higher when the chloride ions are introduced into the concrete. Steel corrosion is decisive factor for the determination of service life of the marine concrete structures because chloride ions are abundant in the sea. In this paper, chloride penetration analysis for the rectangular pier in the marine environment is performed considering the diffusion movement of chlorides. Result reveals that the chloride concentration in the corner bar is higher than that of in the side bar with rectangular pier. Also the time to the specified accumulation of chloride in the corner bar is much shorter than that in the side bar. Because the corrosion initiation time of corner bar is half as much as that of side bar, service life for the rectangular pier in marine environment should be determined with respect to the coner bar.

  • As a manufacturing process of recycled aggregate improves the quality of recycled aggregate shall be sufficient enough to be used for structural concrete. This study characterized compressive strength and elastic modulus of concrete that used recycled coarse and fine aggregate. Before the strength tests, the fundamental characteristics of recycled aggregate were preliminarily analyzed and the recycled aggregate satisfied the class 1 requirements in KS F 2573. As the replacement ratio increased, the compressive strength and elastic modulus of recycled aggregate concrete decreased. When the coarse and fine aggregates were completely replaced with the recycled, the compressive strength and elastic modulus were decreased by 13% and 31%, respectively. Based on the test results, this study suggests equations for predicting the compressive strength and elastic modulus of the recycled aggregate concrete with respect to the replacement ratio. The values from the equations were in good agreement with the test data from this study and others.

  • Concrete slab curls and warps due to the uneven distribution of temperature and moisture and as the result, internal stress develops within the slab. Therefore, environmental loads must be considered in addition to the traffic loads to predict the lifespan of the concrete pavement more accurately. The strength of the concrete slab is gradually decreases to a certain level at which fatigue cracking is generated by the repetitive traffic and environmental loadings. In this study, a new fatigue regression model was developed based on the results from previously performed studies. To verify the model, another laboratory flexural fatigue test program which was not used in the model development, was conducted and compared with the predictions of other existing models. Each fatigue model was applied to analysis logic of cumulative fatigue damage of concrete pavement developed in the study. The sensitivity of cumulative fatigue damage calculated by each model was analyzed for the design factors such as slab thickness, joint spacing, complex modulus of subgrade reaction and the load transfer at joints. As the result, the model developed in this study could reflect environmental loading more reasonably by improving other existing models which consider R, minimum/maximum stress ratio.

  • Waste concrete accounts for the largest portion of construction waste, and the supply of natural aggregate is unstable. Therefore, importance of using recycled aggregate is emphasized. The purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanical properties of high strength concrete according to the replacement rate of recycled coarse aggregate. For this purpose, the target design compressive strength was set to 40MPa, and the substitution rates of the recycled coarse aggregate were set to 0%, 30%, 60%, and 100%, respectively. Through experiments on the unreinforced concrete and hardened concrete, The validity of the use was confirmed. In addition, LCA method was used to evaluate the environmental impact of recycled aggregates and to compare and analyze the environmental impacts of the aggregates.

  • A new cementitious material has been developed, called alkali-activated fly ash cement(AAFC), which is used to produce AAFC-concrete for construction. The effect of acid attack, sodium chloride solution, carbonation, freeze-thaw cycling, and SEM, XRD analysis of the AAFC-concrete prepared using alkali-activated fly ash cement and OPC-concrete were experimentally investigated. It was found that the acid resistance of AAFC-concrete(35 MPa) prepared from alkali-activated fly ash at 85$^{\circ}C$ for 24 hrs is far better than OPC-concrete(35 MPa). Also, the AAFC-concrete(35 MPa) had a similar resistance of OPC-concrete(35 MPa) to attack, such as sodium chloride solution, carbonation and freeze-thaw cycling.
