  • Vegetative Filter Strip (VFS) is one of effective Best Management Practices (BMPs) to prevent sediment-laden water problem, is installed at the edge of source area such agricultural area so that sediment occurred in source area is trapped by VFS before it flow into stream or river. Appropriate scale of it needs to be simulated before it is installed, considering various field conditions. In this study, a model using VFSMOD-w model and Genetic Algorithm to determine effective VFS length was developed, it is available to calibrate input parameter related to source area sediment yield through thousands of VFSMOD-w simulations. Useful DBs, moreover, are stored in the model so that very specific input parameters can be used with reasonable values. Compared simulated values to observed data values for calibration, R2 and Nash-Stucliffe model efficiency coefficient were 0.74 and 0.65 in flow comparison, and 0.89 and 0.79 in sediment comparison. The model determined 1.0 m of Filter Length, 0.18 of Filter Slope, and 0.2 cm of Filter Media Spacing to reduce 80% of sediment by VFS. The model has not only Auto-Calibration module also DBs for specific input parameters, thus, the model is expected to be used for effective VFS scale.

  • In this paper, an optimization model for the clustered node allocation systems in the distributed computing environment is presented. In the presented model with a distributed file system framework, the dynamics of system behavior over times is carefully thought over the nodes and hence the functionality of the cluster monitor node to check the feasibility of the current set of clustered node allocation is given. The cluster monitor node of the node allocation system capable of distributing the parallel modules to clustered nodes provides a good allocation solution using Genetic Algorithms (GA). As a part of the experimental studies, the solution quality and computation time effects of varying GA experimental parameters, such as the encoding scheme, the genetic operators (crossover, mutations), the population size, and the number of node modules, and the comparative findings are presented.

  • In mammalian, cytochrome P4501A1 (CYP1A1) is very important for metabolism of xenobiotics such as PAHs(Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon) and heterocyclic amine, and it is induced by environmental contaminants such as PAHs, TCDD(2,3,7,8-tetrchlorodibenzo-p-dioxin) and 3-MC (3-methylcholanthrene). In fish, like mammalian, when it is exposed to environmental contaminants, they cause specific and sensitive induction of CYP1A. Therefore, induction of CYP1A in fish and mammalian is widely used as a biomarker for exposure of environmental contaminants. In this study, to compare the function of Cyp1a1 in fish with it in mammalian, we have used rainbow trout(Oncorhynchys mykiss) hepatoma cells (RTH-149) and mouse hepatocyte (Hepa-I). in order to examine induction of Cyp1a1 by TCDD, we have used the bioassay system. We examined effects of TCDD on the Cyp1a1-luciferase reporter gene activity, 7-ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase(EROD) activity and Cypa mRNA level.

  • Situation awareness for vehicles and pedestrians is very critical to ensure safety. While on-board sensors or systems can easily detect line-of-sight pedestrians, it is difficult to locate the positions of out-of-sight pedestrians especially with no GPS service. This paper proposes a method for accurate and on-time localization of indoor pedestrians by nearby vehicles. The proposed method is based on mobile ad-hoc networks among vehicles and pedestrians, without relying on infrastructures such as GPS, WiFi AP, and Bluetooth-based systems. Also, this paper develops a genetic algorithm to accurately and promptly locate pedestrians. Finally, simulation results are presented to quantitatively evaluate the proposed method compared to other studies.

  • This study examined the relationship between dinoflagellate cysts and vegetative cells, to a certain extent, by conducting a germination experiment on dinoflagellate cysts collected from a sediment trap and surface sediment. The germination experiment showed that 56.8%, 25 of the 44 species of dinoflagellate cysts seen in the sediment trap, germinated, which confirmed the relationship between cysts and vegetative cells. The germination experiment also found that Votadinium carvum showed different forms of vegetative cells in all three forms of cysts, which required an accurate identification of the species through a genetic analysis. Furthermore, the species known to be the cyst of Cochlodinium polykrikoides was determined to be Cochlodinium sp., and the cysts of C. polykrikoides did not appear.

  • In this study, the reliable and simple analysis method was proposed to predict the settlement characteristic of composite ground in stage of design and construction of sand compaction pile (SCP). Model parameters could be obtained by the optimization process based on genetic algorithm. In order to examine the proposed method, laboratory consolidation tests on the settlement characteristic of SCP composite ground were performed for various replacement ratio of sand such as 0 (no replacement), 20, 36, and 56%. The proposed model showed very good agreements with measured data in the relation of void ratio-log scaled stress and time-compression far each replacement ratio.

  • Ballast water has been known as a major vector for global dispersal of toxic dinoflagellates and other microalgae. In this study, biodiversity in ships’ ballast water was examined using a dinoflagellate-oriented PCR primer set and species-specific real-time PCR. While motile dinoflagellates could be observe at very low cell densities by light microscopy,a wide range of dinoflagellate taxa including parasitic and phototrophic pico-dinoflagellates as well as harmful species to marine fish/shellfish was detected when techniques for cloning/sequencing of SSU rDNA of sample cells were used. Present result suggests that molecular methods including species-specific PCR primers may offer rapid and accurate detection of invasive species in ballast water.

  • As for the increasing demanding on the development of direct-ecological landfill monitoring methods, it is needed for critically defining the condition of landfills and their influence on the environment, quantifying the amount of enzymes and bacteria mainly concerned with biochemical reaction in the landfills. This study was thus conducted to understand the fates of contaminants in association with groundwater quality parameters. For the study, groundwater was seasonally sampled from four closed unsanitary landfills(i.e. Cheonan(C), Wonju(W), Nonsan(N), Pyeongtaek(P) sites) in which microbial diversity was simultaneously obtained by 16S rDNA methods. Subsequently, a number of primer sets were prepared for quantifying the specific gene of representative bacteria and the gene of encoding enzymes dominantly found in the landfills. The relationship between water quality parameters and gene quantification were compared based on correlation factors. Correlation between DSR(Sulfate reduction bacteria) gene and BOD(Biochemical Oxygen Demand) was greater than 0.8 while NSR(Nitrification bacteria-Nitrospira sp.) gene and nitrate were related more than 0.9. A stabilization indicator(BOD/COD) and MTOT(Methane Oxidation bacteria), MCR(Methyl coenzyme M reductase), Dde(Dechloromonas denitrificans) genes were correlated over 0.8, but ferric iron and Fli(Ferribacterium limineticm) gene were at the lowest of 0.7. For MTOT, it was at the highest related at 100% over BOD/COD. In addition, anaerobic genes(i.e., nirS-Nitrite reductase, MCR. Dde, DSR) and DO were also related more than 0.8, which showing anaerobic reactions generally dependant upon DO. As demonstrated in the study, molecular biological investigation and water quality parameters are highly co-linked, so that quantitative real-time PCR could be cooperatively used for assessing landfill stabilization in association with the conventional monitoring parameters.
