  • Community dynamics of benthic macroinvertebrates and biological evaluation of water quality were investigated at Gigyecheon of Pohang and Gyeongju, Korea. The survey was carried out at 8 sites from May to October, 2017. As a result, total of 104 species under 54 families, 15 orders, 8 classes in 4 phyla with 5,052 individuals were revealed. The number of species was the most abundantly identified in aquatic insects, 76 species under 34 families, 6 orders. Among them, the order Odonata was the most abundant taxon as 21 species(20.2%). The most abundant individuals were collected in the phylum Mollusca as 1,453 individuals(28.8%). Various species appeared dominantly at each site by season, and the most dominant species was Caridina denticulata denticulata belonging to the class Malacostraca with 0.08 of dominance index. According to the results of community structure analyses, the diversity and richness indices were the highest at site II, the evenness index was the highest at site I, and the dominance index was the highest at site IV. The number of species and individuals of gathering collectors were the highest among functional feeding groups. Those of sprawlers were the highest among habitat orientation groups. The ESB showed a tendency to change according to season and site, and it was the highest in May at most surveyed sites. The KSI was also somewhat fluctuated according to season and site. From these indices, average biological water quality was evaluated as class II.

  • Temporal and spatial variations of size-structured phytoplankton (chlorophyll a) were investigated over an annual cycle (February-October, 2003) to elucidate phytoplankton dynamics in the Juam Reservoir, Chonnam. Physical properties were also measured to investigate the relationship between the properties and temporal and spatial variations of size structured phytoplankton using simple linear regression. Phytoplankton (chlorophyll a) were grouped into three size classes: micro-size(> 20 ${\mu}m$), nano-size (3-20 ${\mu}m$) and pico-size (< 3 ${\mu}m$) in this study. Physical properties included water temperature, light attenuation coefficients, PAR (photosynthetically active radiation) and turbidity. Maximum chlorophyll a was observed in April, 2003 in the lower region whereas a peak of chlorophyll a developed in October, 2003 in the upper region. Large cell-sized phytoplankton (micro-size class)were dominant in the events of the chlorophyll a peaks. Potential mechanisms in the physical properties affecting the size-structured phytoplankton dynamics in the Juam Reservoir were discussed.

  • Community dynamics of benthic macroinvertebrates in response to natural disturbances (flooding and water temperature) were investigated in the Suyong and Soktae Streams in Busan from October 1997 to September 1998. Oigochaeta and Chironomus, organic polluted indicators, were dominant and various taxa were observed at the study sites. The density and biomass of two dominant taxa increased in warm months while the indicators were washed away in the flooding season. From October to February when the water temperature was less than $15^{\circ}C$, Oligochaeta appeared to be dominant at the Soktae Stream. In contrast various taxa were collected at the Suyong stream. The densities of Oligochaeta and Chironomus increased at the Soktae and the Suyong streams in March. Due to the big flooding in April, the density of dominant taxa decreased abruptly. The community structure showed differences patterns in the flooding season at two streams from June to August. In the Soktae stream, the density increased in August. The reverse patterns were observed in the Suyong stream, washing out in June followed by slow recovery of densities in the fellowing months. Density and biomass showed relatively higher correlations in most taxa. CCA (Canonocial Correspondence Analysis) showed that taxa was different response to different environmental factors.

  • Structure and dynamics for three type forests of Quercus acuta, Quercus acutissima and Pinus rigida forests were studied in Wando island, Korea. Quercus acuta and Quercus acutissima forests were natural forest and Pinus rigida forest was a about 30-year-old plantation. Density of tree layers of Quercus acuta, Quercus acutissima and Pinus rigida forests was 2,250 trees/ha, 760 trees/ha, and 1,560 trees/ha, respectively. Mean DBH of tree layers of Quercus acuta, Quercus acutissima and Pinus rigida forests was 12.1 cm, 14.3 cm, and 14.1 cm, respectively. Total basal area of tree layer and subtree layer was $37.1m^2/ha$ for Quercus acuta forest, $19.0m^2/ha$ for Quercus acutissima forest, and $29.2m^2/ha$ for Pinus rigida forest, respectively. According to importance percentage, Camellia japonica was the first dominant species in subtree and shrub layers of all of Quercus acuta, Quercus acutissima and Pinus rigida forests. Species diversity(H') of forest total was 0.814 for Quercus acuta forest, 0.956 for Quercus acutissima forest, and 0.866 for Pinus rigida forest, respectively. According to diameter distribution, Quercus acuta forest was supposed to remain unchanged for a long time. Quercus acutissima forest was changing to Camellia japomica forest and Pinus rigida forest was changing to Quercus acuta-Camellia japonica forest.

  • Pre-monsoon dynamics of zooplankton community were investigated in Yongwol West River tributary; wetland shaped Korean Peninsula. Zooplankters were collected at three sites (stn 1: Yongwol West River, stn 2: Pyungchang River, stn 3: Jucheon River) monthly during the period between March and July 2014 except April. Totally 58 taxa of zooplankton occurred, consisting of 27 species of rotifer, 18 species of cladoceran, eight species of copepod, four kinds of aquatic insect larvae and one nematod. Lotic cladocerans of Alona spp. belonging to Chydoridae occurred frequently while typical lentic ones of Bosmina spp. and Daphnia spp. were not distributed, then sampling sites may be located in lotic waters. Zooplankton abundance recorded as $4,451-8,011indiv{\cdot}m^{-3}$ in Jucheon River but never exceeded $500indiv{\cdot}m^{-3}$ in other rivers. In Yongwol West River, dominant taxa were aquatic insect larvae from March through June and succeeded to cladocerans and copepods in July. Similar succession was observed in Jucheon River where aquatic insect larvae dominated in March and changed to cladocerans and copepods from May with high abundance. No such succession of zooplankton community was detected in Pyunchang River. Species diversity indices were the highest in Yongwol West River except in March. High values of dissolved oxygen ($9.0-11.0 mg{\cdot}liter^{-1}$) may show the characteristics of mountain streams. Water temperature increased gradually from $10.1^{\circ}C$ to $27.9^{\circ}C$ and pH varied within generally high range between 7.9-8.9, respectively. High value of pH seems to be derived from lime stone mines and cement factories around the studied area.

  • Pre-monsoon dynamics of zooplankton community were investigated in the estuary of the Tamjin River flowing into the Doam Bay of the southern coast of Korea. Monthly sampling was carried out to collect zooplankters at five sites in the estuary and the river during the period between March and June 2014. Dissolved oxygen contents were low between $5.0{\sim}7.0mgL^{-1}$ in the estuary and high, 7.0~11.0, in the river. Water temperature increased gradually from 12.0 to $28.0^{\circ}C$ and pH fluctuated between the range 7.4~8.8, respectively. A total of 85 taxa consisted of 25 species of rotifer, 30 kinds of copepod, 8 species of cladoceran, six kinds of aquatic insect larvae, four kinds of decapod and two kinds of Cirripedia larvae and Polychaeta larvae and one kind of Amphipoda, Ispopoda, Appenidicularia, Nematoda and Cnidaria, and Nocticluca scintillans was occurred. Brackish copepods distributed at almost all studied sites with freshwater zooplankters being restricted to upper waters of the river. Monthly succession of Acartia spp. was observed in the estuary with the occurrence of A. hudsonica in March and April then A. omori in May and June. Zooplankton abundance showed to vary from 450 to $87,818ind\;m^{-3}$ due to the explosion of copepodite and copepod nauplius in the estuary. Species diversity indices varied between 0.6~2.3 and generally low in the estuary and high in the river. Sea water input into the river seems to affect the river biota for more than some kilometers of the upper waters of the Tamjin River.

  • The dynamics and seasonal succession of dinoflagellate community, and their correlations with environmental parameters were investigated during the period from April, 1986 to March, 1987 at 6 selected stations in Masan Bay, Korea. The dinoflagellate standing crops varied extensively with months and stations: ranging from 44 to 2,789,900 cella/ l at surface layer and from 52 to 165,714 cells/ l at bottom layer, respectively. The distribution of standing crops by size class of dinoflagellate species showed that a group of 20-um size class was predominant throughout the present survey, since the most of dominant species have belonged to the size category. Among dominant species, Gyrodinium fissum was most dominant throughout the year in all sampling stations, particulary in June. Scripsiella trochoidea was predominant in May, Protoperidinium bipes and Prorocentrum minimum from June to September, Prorocentrum triestinum, P micans and Ceratium fusus from September to December, and Heterocapsa triquetra from December to April. The stepwise multiple regression analysis between dinoflagellate and environmental parameters revealed that salinity, nitrate-N, pH, and transparency were correlated with the variations of standing crops of dinoflagellate.

  • The Shihwa constructed wetland was established for the treatment of severely polluted water from Banwoul, Donghwa and Samhwa streams, This study was focused on investigating dynamics of phytoplankton community at 5 stations of open waters in the Shihwa constructed wetland from October 2001 to July 2002. The concentration of T-N and T-P of inlet stations from the streams were decreased by flowed through the wetland. However, the TN/TP ratios at all stations were shown as a little over 16 indicating that the T-P plays an important role as a limitation factor. Phytoplankton communities were identified as a total of 413 taxa which were composed of 375 species, 21 varieties, 2 forma and 15 unidentified species. The standing crops of phytoplankton communities and chlorophyll-a concentrations ranged 330 ${\sim}$ 36, 420 cells $mL^{-1}$ and $2.5\;{\sim}\;170.7\;{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ respectively, and showed a decreasing tendency after flowing through the wetland at almost stations. Dominant species were 14 taxa at all stations which were Euglena oblonga, Synura spinosa, and etc. The species composition, standing crops and chlorophyll concentrations of phytoplankton communities appeared a distinct differences between open waters of inlet from stream and open waters flowed through the wetland. Theses results were affected from decreasing effects of TN, TP and SS by flowed through the wetland from inlet waters of streams.
