  • This paper presents the development of the probability density function applicable for wave heights (peak-to-trough excursions) in finite water depth including shallow water depth. The probability distribution applicable to wave heights of a non-Gaussian random process is derived based on the concept of the maximum entropy method. When wave heights are limited by breaking wave heights (or water depth) and only first and second moments of wave heights are given, the probability density function developed is closed form and expressed in terms of wave parameters such as $H_m$(mean wave height), $H_{rms}$(root-mean-square wave height), $H_b$(breaking wave height). When higher than third moment of wave heights are given, it is necessary to solve the system of nonlinear integral equations numerically using Newton-Raphson method to obtain the parameters of probability density function which is maximizing the entropy function. The probability density function thusly derived agrees very well with the histogram of wave heights in finite water depth obtained during storm. The probability density function of wave heights developed using maximum entropy method appears to be useful in estimating extreme values and statistical properties of wave heights for the design of coastal structures.

  • Correntropy is a generalized correlation function that contains higher order moments of the probability density function (PDF) than the conventional moment expansions. The criterion maximizing cross-correntropy (MCC) of two different random variables has yielded superior performance particularly in nonlinear, non-Gaussian signal processing comparing to mean squared error criterion. In this paper we propose a new blind equalization algorithm based on cross-correntropy criterion which uses, as two variables, equalizer output PDF and Parzen PDF estimate of a set of randomly generated symbols that complies with the transmitted symbol PDF. The performance of the proposed algorithm based on MCC is compared with the Euclidian distance minimization.

  • The double-peak normal distribution function (DPDF) suggested by Cho et al.(2004) has the problems that the extremely high and low tidal elevations are frequently generated in the Monte-Carlo simulation processes because the upper and lower limits of the DPDF are unbounded in spite of the excellent goodness-offit results. In this study, the modified DPDF is suggested by introducing the upper and lower value parameters and re-scale parameters in order to remove these problems. These new parameters of the DPDF are optimally estimated by the non-linear optimization problem solver using the Levenberg-Marquardt scheme. This modified DPDF can remove completely the unrealistically generated tidal levations and give a slightly better fit than the existing DRDF. Based on the DPDF's characteristic power, the over- and under estimation problems of the design factors are also automatically intercepted, too.

  • Blind adaptive systems based on the Euclidean distance (ED) between the distribution function of the output samples and that of a set of random symbols generated at the receiver matching with the distribution function of the transmitted symbol points estimate the ED at each iteration time to examine its convergence state or its minimum ED value. The problem is that this ED estimation obtained by block?data processing requires a heavy calculation burden. In this paper, a recursive ED estimation method is proposed that reduces the computational complexity by way of utilizing the relationship between the current and previous states of the datablock. The relationship provides a ground that the currently estimated ED value can be used for the estimation of the next ED without the need for processing the whole new data block. From the simulation results the proposed recursive ED estimation shows the same estimation values as that of the conventional method, and in the aspect of computational burden, the proposed method requires only O(N) at each iteration time while the conventional block?processing method does $O(N^2)$.

  • A video segmentation algorithm, which can extract objects even with non-stationary backgrounds, is proposed in this work. The proposed algorithm is composed of three steps. First, we perform an initial segmentation interactively to build the probability density functions of colors per each macro block via kernel density estimation. Then, for each subsequent frame, we construct a coherence strip, which is likely to contain the object contour, by exploiting spatio-temporal correlations. Finally, we perform the segmentation by minimizing an energy function composed of color, coherence, and smoothness terms. Experimental results on various test sequences show that the proposed algorithm provides accurate segmentation results.

  • A Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation is proposed for probabilistic full waveform inversion (FWI) in a layered half-space. Dynamic responses on the half-space surface are estimated using the thin-layer method when a harmonic vertical force is applied. Subsequently, a posterior probability distribution function and the corresponding objective function are formulated to minimize the difference between estimations and observed data as well as that of model parameters from prior information. Based on the gradient of the objective function, a proposal distribution and an acceptance probability for MCMC samples are proposed. The proposed MCMC simulation is applied to several layered half-space examples. It is demonstrated that the proposed MCMC simulation for probabilistic FWI can estimate probabilistic material properties such as the shear-wave velocities of a layered half-space.

  • Nonparametric Bayesian (np Bayes) statistical models are popularly used in a variety of research areas because of their flexibility and computational convenience. This paper reviews the np Bayes models focusing on biomedical research applications. We review key probability models for np Bayes inference while illustrating how each of the models is used to answer different types of research questions using biomedical examples. The examples are chosen to highlight the problems that are challenging for standard parametric inference but can be solved using nonparametric inference. We discuss np Bayes inference in four topics: (1) density estimation, (2) clustering, (3) random effects distribution, and (4) regression.

  • In this paper, an adaptive Bayesian approach to image segmentation was developed for boundary detection. Both image intensities and texture information were used for obtaining better quality of the image segmentation by using the C programming language. Fuzzy c-mean clustering was applied fer the conditional probability density function, and Gibbs random field model was used for the prior probability density function. To simply test the algorithm, a synthetic image (256$\times$256) with a set of low gray values (50, 100, 150 and 200) was created and normalized between 0 and 1 n double precision. Results have been presented that demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithm in segmenting the synthetic image, resulting in more than 99% accuracy when noise characteristics are correctly modeled. The algorithm was applied to the Antarctic mosaic that was generated using 1963 Declassified Intelligence Satellite Photographs. The accuracy of the resulting vector map was estimated about 300-m.

  • A stochastic probabilistic model for harbor structures such as rubble-mound breakwater has been formulated by using the generalized Wiener process considering the nonlinearity of damage drift and its nonlinear uncertainty, by which the damage path with real-time can be tracked, the residual useful lifetime at some age can also be analyzed properly. The formulated stochastic model can easily calculate the probability of failure with the passage of time through the probability density function of cumulative damage. In particular, the probability density functions of residual useful lifetime of the existing harbor structures can be derived, which can take into account the current age, its present damage state and the future damage process to be occurred. By using the maximum likelihood method and the least square method together, the involved parameters in the stochastic model can be estimated. In the calibration of the stochastic model presented in this paper, the present results are very well similar with the results of MCS about tracking of the damage paths as well as evaluating of the density functions of the cumulative damage and the residual useful lifetime. MTTF and MRL are also evaluated exactly. Meanwhile, the stochastic probabilistic model has been applied to the rubble-mound breakwater. The related parameters can be estimated by using the experimental data of the cumulative damages of armor units measured as a function of time. The theoretical results about the probability density function of cumulative damage and the probability of failure are very well agreed with MCS results such that the density functions of the cumulative damage tend to move to rightward and the amounts of its uncertainty are increased as the elapsed time goes on. Thus, the probabilities of failure with the elapsed time are also increased sharply. Finally, the behaviors of residual useful lifetime have been investigated with the elapsed age. It is concluded for rubble-mound breakwaters that the probability density functions of residual useful lifetime tends to have a longer tail in the right side rather than the left side because of the gradual increases of cumulative damage of armor units. Therefore, its MRLs are sharply decreased after some age. In this paper, the special attentions are paid to the relationship of MTTF and MRL and the elapsed age of the existing structure. In spite of that the sum of the elapsed age and MRL must be equal to MTTF deterministically, the large difference has been shown as the elapsed age is increased which is due to the uncertainty of cumulative damage to be occurred in the future.
