  • The purposes of this study were to analyze the PCK of pre-service chemistry teachers and to know the changes of in PCK before and after the educational practice. For this study, four pre-service teachers majoring in chemistry education were selected as proteges and one professor of chemistry education department participated as a mentor. For the analysis of pre-service teachers' PCK, proteges' instructions, mentoring process, and semi-constructed interviews were collected. According to the results, most of the elements of the PCK were lack of proteges' instructions before the mentoring, because they didn't know the necessary practical knowledge for instructions. They also didn't know how they could apply their knowledge to the instructions. However, most of the pre-service teachers developed their PCK through the mentoring. This study shows that pre-service teacher's PCK could develop effectively by well-formed programs of mentoring before and after the educational practice in college education for pre-service teachers.

  • In this study, we developed education materials using history of science related to the experiment of 'Boyle's air pump' and the Boyle and Hobbs' debate of vacuum to find out the perceptions of NOS by pre-service chemistry teachers. For the study, 29 pre-service chemistry teachers at a college of education in Chungcheongbuk-do were selected. As RFN items that were related to the contextual situation developed in this study, items in the categories of 'Aims and Values', 'Scientific practices', 'Scientific Methods among Educational Applications' and 'Social-Institutional Aspects among Educational Applications' were selected. Through the items of RFN, the perceptions of pre-service teachers in non-contextual situations were investigated. Then we presented the pre-service teachers with the situation related to Boyle's experiment on air pump and Boyle and Hobbes' debate over vacuum. In addition, their perception of NOS was examined in contextual situations related to RFN items. Responses to the items, experimental results related to Boyle's Law, group discussion, and interview data were collected as data. As a result of the study, it was found that pre-service teachers had informed perceptions in most of the items, but cases with naive views or mixed views were found in context experimental situations. This study can contribute to the NOS education for pre-service chemistry teachers by development of context situation education materials related to NOS and by finding out their perceptions in the non-contextual and contextual situation.

  • The basic tenet of science education by the 7th national curriculum for middle school students is teaching by learner's academic levels. It is a kind of new approach to both of teachers and students, but there has been little preparation in school fields for the new approach. Therefore, this study reviewed the characteristics and constraints of the approach, and suggested the types of learning methods for the approach. And then this study explored the guidelines for writing a lesson plan for the science education by the 7th national curriculum. Specifically, this study presented an example of lesson plan for a unit of middle school chemistry.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the Nature of Argumentation in Science education (NAS). For this purpose, we collected previous studies conducted on the argumentation in science education, and then collected previous studies were analyzed to extract the overall characteristics of argumentation in science education. Based on the results, an expert review was conducted, then the nature of argumentation in science education was finally derived to a total of seven components: 'evidence based', 'linguistic interaction', 'context dependency', 'public decision-making', 'tentative agreement', 'methodological diversity', and 'enculturation of scientific culture'. Understanding the nature of argumentation in science education can promote the practice of argumentation in science learning. Therefore, further studies will be necessary to conduct research to expand and refine the nature of argumentation in science education in order to effectively practice it in science learning.

  • This study is a qualitative study to identify the educational needs for home-based lung cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. The study participants were 20 patients with home-based lung cancer patients receiving chemotherapy at a university hospital at D city. Data collected through interviews from July 2016 to September 2017 were analyzed using Krippendorff's method. As a result, 3 categories, 9 themes, 19 sub-themes, and 54 meaningful statements were derived. The three categories of educational needs were 'psychological needs', 'knowledge needs', and 'social needs'. Home-based lung cancer patients receiving chemotherapy wanted to support prognosis and stress and receive accurate knowledge of side effects and information on social support systems through education. The results of this study are expected to be used as basic data for the development of educational intervention programs for home-based lung cancer patients receiving chemotherapy in the future.

  • This study analyzed the thinking types of pre-service chemical cell chemistry teachers according to grade and tried to find out how the education for pre-service teachers had influenced their thinking types. This study found that the pre-service education had failed to form scientific conceptions. Some pre-service teachers thought that college education couldn't help them understand the knowledge about chemical cell. In addition, they are lacking in scientific conception. Even some of them who thought college education was helpful had wrong conceptions. Most of the pre-service teachers' thoughts could not exceed the level of the high school chemistry textbooks. But, Juniors had more scientific conception than other grades through the group discussions about chemistry textbooks' contents in the course of "Theory of Science Teaching Materials". So, Pre-service education should include the pedagogical knowledge with content knowledge treated in secondary school science textbooks for educational effects.

  • In this study, the chemistry achievement of the Korean 8th grade students in the Third Inter-national Mathematics and Science Study-Repeat(TIMSS-R), which was administered internationally in 1999,was analyzed. By the 6th national curriculum, 31 chemistry problems were selected from the categories of 'classification of matter', 'structure of matter', 'chemical reactivity and transformations', 'physical properties and physical changes of matter', 'heat and temperature', 'subatomic particles', 'pollution', 'scientific method',and 'scientific measurements' among the total 143 problems. Based on the analysis of the percentage of cor-rectness on each problem, the weak and strong points of the 6th curriculum were discussed. The implications for the development of national curriculum and textbook are suggested.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of Argument-based Inquiry activities on the claims and evidence in elementary students' science writing. Participants were thirty three fifth grade elementary school students and argument-based inquiry activities on five topics were implemented. We analyzed the Summary Writing samples written by students to investigate the effect of the Argument-based inquiry activities on elementary students' claims and evidence in their science writing, and also analyzed the writing samples of the experimental group to which the Argument-based inquiry activities were implemented, to examine the change of claims and evidence. The results of this study showed that the mean of experimental group was significantly higher than that of the comparison group. As a result of analyzing claims and evidence in Summary Writing of experimental group, the level of claim and evidence has tended to increase gradually as the number of classes progresses.
