  • Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a rapid and accurate analytical method for determining the composition of agricultural products and feeds. An important merit of the NIRS analytical system is consistent predictions across instruments. However, proper calibration is the most important factor for a NIRS analytical system. Forty samples were obtained from Kyonggi-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services, and used to develop calibrations for crude protein content and crude oil content. Calibrations equations were developed using multiple linear regression (MLR). Accuracy and precision of NIRS predictions were adequate for quality measurement for the two constituents in kidney bean seed. In calibration sample sets (N=30), multiple correlation coefficient between NIR and lab measurements is 0.90 for seed, 0.97 for powder in seed protein concentration and 0.40 for seed and 0.92 for powder in seed oil concentration, respectively. It is concluded that NIRS method is suitable for the determination of seed composition in whole kidney bean.

  • Shotcrete for support of tunnel structures may contact with groundwater. The hazardous components in groundwater may cause corrosion of shotcrete. Also, the hazardous components may deteriorate the engineering properties of shotcrete, such as compressive strength, bond strength, flexural strength and so forth. The more the effect of the hazardous components on the shotcrete may increase, the more the stability of tunnel structure may decrease. The specimens were artificially immersed in various chemical solutions including hazardous components after the specimens were made at the tunnel construction site. It was performed to analyze the effect of the hazardous components in ground water on the engineering properties of shotcrete. The uniaxial compressive strength test, XRD, SEM were conducted to evaluate the durability and corrosion of shotcrete.

  • Various poly(amic acid)s were synthesized from PMDA/BPDA/p-PDA/ODA with different mole ratios and effectively converted into 4-component polyimide films by thermal imidization. The chemical structures and thermo-mechanical properties of polyimide films were examined using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermo-gravimetric analyzer (TGA), thermo-mechanical analyzer (TMA), dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA) and universal tensile machine (UTM). The tensile strength, modulus, and thermal properties of polyimides films increased with the amount of rigid PMDA and p-PDA, while the elongation and moisture absorption of polyimide films increased with the amount of flexible BPDA and ODA. One of 4-component polyimide films exhibited a similar coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) value to that of copper when it was composed of PMDA : BPDA : p-PDA : ODA with the ratio of 5 : 5 : 4 : 6. Thus, this polyimide film could be useful for a base film for flexible copper clad laminates (FCCL) of flexible printed circuit boards.

Geochemical baseline mapping for geochemical hazard assessment (지구화학적 재해 평가를 위한 지화학도 작성 및 기준치 설정)

  • The national geochemical baseline mapping project has been conducted since 1996 to establish a quantitative assessment system for geochemical hazards in natural environments. The geochemical image maps have been edited for thirty-six elements(i.e., 10 major oxides and 26 trace elements) in light sediments, finer fraction than 150 $\mu$m, collected from first- to second-order streams(totally 11,000) over five provinces in the western half(ca. 45,000 km$^2$) of Korea. Natural background values of the elements were given for different geological environments. Based on the statistics, geochemical baselines were newly obtained for a quantitative hazard assessment on toxicity of heavy metals and deficiency of essential nutrients. Some chosen examples of geochemical hazards are presented based on new geochemical image maps and related baseline data.

  • As a basic research for development of the domestic field-portable XRF spectrometer, we discussed the analytical results of bench-top ED-XRF and field-portable XRF method for polluted heavy metals such as Cr, As, Se, Hg, Pb, Cd in soil samples. To obtain the best performance of the XRF spectrometer, the instrumental parameters of X-ray tube-voltage and measurement time were optimized for 6 heavy-metal elements in soil using certified reference material. The quantitative analysis of Cr, As, Se, Hg, Pb, Cd concentration in certified reference materials and soil samples were compared by empirical method and fundamental parameter method.

Study for the separation and comparison of azo dyes and their diazo components (아조염료와 디아조 성분의 분리 및 비교에 관한 연구)

  • Well known environmental wastes from dye industry were separated by the micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography(MECC). These wastes include H-acid modifier and 2-naphthylamine-1,5-disulfonic acid, and are known to be the diazo components of the azo dye. The results of the separation were compared with the result obtained by the HPLC using ion-pairing mechnism. MECC method was also applied to separate a few direct dyes including Direct Blue 2, Direct Blue 6 and Direct Blue 15, and reactive dye such as Reactive Orange 4. Informations about the diazo components of any azo dye could be obtained by comparison of electropherogram of the reduction solution of given dye with those obtained from standard materials such as H-acid, J-acid, ${\gamma}$-acid, orthanilic acid, sulfanilic acid and 2-naphthylamine-1,5-disulfonic acid which are used as diazo components of the typical azo dyes. It has been concluded that MECC and HPLC with ion-pairing mechanism could be successfully applied for the analysis of unknown dyes and their diazo components.

Analysis of the Urushiol in Korean Lacquer (한국산 옻칠의 우루시올 성분 분석)

  • In Korea, for a long time Rhus verniciflua has traditionally been used as an herbal medicines plants. A stem of Rhus verniciflua has been used to treat gastrointestinal trouble with in form of boiled chicken as a folk medicine. But it has been recognized as an extremely active allergen causing skin reactions. The chief allergenic component, urushiol, is found within the oleoresinous sap of Rhus verniciflua. Most components of urushiol have unsaturated side chains. These unsaturated side chains of urushiol are important to polymerization of these natural products. The urushiol components in Korean lacquer were isolated by reversed phase HPLC. The molecular weight of purified urushiol was determined as 340 from mass analysis. This compound was identified as Heptadecatetraenyl catechol (MW 340).
