  • Concrete filled steel tube system has two major advantages. First, the confinement effect of steel tube improves the compressive strength of concrete. Second, the load capacity and deformation capacity of members are improved because concrete restrains local buckling of steel tube. It does, however, involve workability problem of using stud bolts or anchor bolts to provide composite effect for larger cross-sections. While the ribs inside the columns are desirable in terms of compressive behavior, they cause the deterioration in load capacity upon in-plane deformation resulting from thermal deformation. Since the ribs are directly connected with the concrete, the deformation of the ribs accelerates concrete cracking. Thus, it is required to improve the toughness of the concrete to resist the deformation of the ribs. Welding built-up tubular square columns can secure safety in terms of fire resistance if the problem are solved. This study focuses on mixing steel fiber in the concrete to improve the ductility and toughness of the columns. In order to evaluate fire resistance performance, loaded heating test was conducted with 8 specimens. The behavior and thermal deformation capacity of the specimens were analyzed for major variables including load ratio. The reliability of heat transfer and thermal stress analysis model was verified through the comparison of the results between the test and previous study.

  • In recent years, frequent terror or military attack by explosion, impact, fire accidents have occurred. Particularly, World Trade Center collapse and US Department of Defense Pentagon attack on Sept. 11 of 2001. Also, nuclear power plant incident on Mar. 11 of 2011. These attacks and incidents were raised public concerns and anxiety of potential terrorist attacks on major infrastructures and structures. Therefore, the extreme loading researches were performed of prestressed concrete (PSC) member, which widely used for nuclear containment vessel and gas tank. In this paper, to evaluate the blast resistance capacity and its protective performance of bi-directional unbonded prestressed concrete member, blast tests were carried out on $1,400{\times}1,000{\times}300mm$ for reinforced concrete (RC), prestressed concrete without rebar (PSC), prestressed concrete with rebar (PSRC) specimens. The applied blast load was generated by the detonation of 55 lbs ANFO explosive charge at 1.0 m standoff distance. The data acquisitions not only included blast waves of incident pressure, reflected pressure, and impulse, but also included displacement, acceleration, and strains at steel, concrete, PS tendon. The results can be used as basic research references for related research areas, which include protective design and blast simulation under blast loading.

  • There is a big risk of bullet impact because military rotorcraft is run in the battle environment. Due to the bullet impact, the rapid increase of the internal pressure can cause the internal explosion or fire of fuel cell. It can be a deadly damage on the survivability of crews. Then, fuel cell of military rotorcraft should be designed taking into account the extreme situation. As the design factor of fuel cell, the internal fluid pressure, structural stress and bullet kinetic energy can be considered. The verification test by real object is the best way to obtain these design data. But, it is a big burden due to huge cost and long-term preparation efforts and the failure of verification test can result in serious delay of a entire development plan. Thus, at the early design stage, the various numerical simulations test is needed to reduce the risk of trial-and-error together with prediction of the design data. In the present study, the bullet impact numerical simulation based on SPH(smoothed particle hydrodynamic) is conducted with the commercial package, LS-DYNA. Then, the resulting equivalent stress, internal pressure and bullet's kinetic energy are evaluated in detail to examine the possibility to obtain the configuration design data of the fuel cell.

  • The object of this paper is to perform the experiments to investigate the relationship of the resistance forces and the failure temperatures on the failure behaviors of H-shaped steel compressive members. H-shaped members(SS400) were used for the test models and the tests for the elevated temperatures were performed by ISO 834 in FILK(Fire Insurers Laboratories of Korea). The local, overall buckling stresses and a yielding stresses for the failure temperatures were compared with the compressive stresses for the loading forces of test models, the yielding strength and elastic modulus reduction factor of the steel at a high temperature were based on the criteria of the EC3(Eurocode 3) Part1.2(1993). The slenderness ratio was fixed by 45.4 and the compressive forces corresponded with 50%, 70% and 80% of the yielding forces at the normal temperatures were chosen for the loading forces of the test models. The failure temperatures of the test models were investigated under three kinds of loading conditions. It was known that the resistance forces have come close to the yielding forces, not the elastic buckling loads evaluated by EC3 at the failure temperatures obtained from the tests which are related to the failure temperatures and the loading stresses.

  • Water pipes are important facilities and consist of pipes of various specifications and materials. The annual average number of earthquakes in Korea is steadily increasing. Therefore, in case of the water pipe, it is estimated necessary to prepare for earthquakes. Damages to the water pipe by the earthquake can cause problems such as water supply and fire suppression, and cause damage to life and property. In Korea, however, it is difficult to find examples of seismic performance evaluation of water pipes based on experimental study. Damage to the water pipes by the earthquake is caused by the displacement-controlled behavior of the ground which is the liquifaction and fault lines. Especially, The damage to the water pipes by the earthquake is concentrated on the joint of the pipe. In particular, piping less than 200mm in diameter was found to be dangerous. Thus, in this study, the seismic and settlement performance of iPVC buried water pipes with fixed joints with a clamp of 150mm was evaluated with a test approach.

  • For sustainable lunar exploration, the most required resources should be procured on site because it takes tremendous cost to transfer the resources from the Earth to the Moon. The technologies required for use of lunar resources refers to In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU). As the ISRU technology cannot be verified in the Earth, a lunar surface environment simulator is necessary to be prepared in advance. The Moon has no atmosphere, and the average temperature of the lunar surface reaches to $107^{\circ}C$ during the daytime and $-153^{\circ}C$ at night. The lunar surface is also covered with very fine soils with sharp particles that are electrostatically charged by solar radiation and solar wind. In this research, generation of vacuum environment with lunar soil mass in a chamber and simulation of electrostatically charged soils are taken into consideration. It was successful to make a vacuum environment of a chamber including lunar soils without soil disturbance by controlling evacuation rate of a vacuum chamber. And an experiment procedure for simulating the charged lunar soil was suggested by theoretical consideration in charging phenomena on lunar dust.

  • At construction sites, interest in the production of precast materials is increasing due to off-site conditions due to changes in construction site conditions due to increased labor costs and the Act on the Punishment of Serious Accidents. In particular, the precast prestressed hollow slab has a hollow shape in the cross section, so structural performance is secured by reducing weight and controlling deflection through stranded wires. With the application of structural standards, the urgency of securing fire resistance performance is emerging. In this study, a fire-resistance cross section was developed by reducing the concrete filling rate in the cross section and improving the upper and lower flange shapes by optimizing the hollow shape in the cross section of the slab to have the same or better structural performance and economic efficiency compared to the existing hollow slab. The PC hollow slab to which this was applied was subjected to a two-hour fire resistance test using the cross-sectional thickness as a variable, and as a result of the test, fire resistance performance (load bearing capacity, heat shielding property, flame retardance property) was secured. Based on the experimental results, it is determined that fire resistance modeling can be established through numerical analysis simulation, and prediction of fire resistance analysis is possible according to the change of the cross-sectional shape in the future.

  • The Rapid Hardening Composite Mat (RHCM) is a product that improves the initial strength development speed of conventional Geosynthetic Cementitious Composite Mats (GCCM). It offers the advantage of quickly securing sufficient strength in railway slopes with insufficient formation level, and provides benefits such as preventing slope erosion and inhibiting vegetation growth. In this study, an analysis of the practical applicability of RHCM in railway settings was conducted through experimentation. The on-site applicability was assessed by categorizing it into fire resistance, durability, and stability, and conducting combustibility test, ground contact pressure test, and daily displacement analyses. In the case of South Korea, where a significant portion of the territory is composed of forested areas, the prevention of slope fires is imperative. To analyze the fire resistance of RHCM, combustibility tests were conducted as an essential measure. Durability was assessed through ground contact pressure tests to analyze the deformation and potential damage of RHCM caused by the inevitable use of small to medium-sized equipment on the construction surface. Furthermore, daily displacement analysis was conducted to evaluate the structural stability by comparing and analyzing the displacement and behavior occurring during the application of RHCM with railway slope maintenance criteria. As a result of the experiments, the RHCM was analyzed to meet the criteria for heat release rate and gas toxicity. Furthermore, the ground contact pressure was observed to be consistently above 50 kPa during the curing period of 4 to 24 hours under all conditions. Additionally, the daily displacement analyzed through field site experiments ranged from -1.7 mm to 1.01 mm, confirming compliance with the criteria.

  • If flammable liquid leaks, vapor evaporated from the pool can cause poisoning or suffocation to workers, leading to secondary accidents such as fires and explosions. To prevent such damage, ventilation facilities shall be installed when designing indoor workplaces. At this time, the behavior varies depending on the characteristics of the leaked chemical, so it is necessary to select a suitable vent location according to the material. Therefore, 3D CFD simulations were introduced to derive optimal vent position and ventilation efficiency was quantitatively evaluated by vent position. At this time, assuming a situation in which flammable liquids leak at indoor workplaces to form pools, the concentration of vapor evaporated from pools was compared to derive the optimal vent position. As a result of research on toluene with high vapor density, ventilation efficiency was confirmed to be the highest at the upper supply-lower exhaust, and it is judged that introducing it can achieve about 3.7 times ventilation effect at the same maintenance cost. Through this study, it is expected that the workplace will be able to secure workers' safety by applying simulation results and installing ventilation ports.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the combustion and thermal properties in order to establish baseline data for the fire safety evaluation of imported wood. The combustion properties such as heat release rate, total heat release, gas yield, and mass loss were analyzed by the method of cone calorimeter test according to KS F ISO 5660-1 and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Analyzed species are five kinds of species as Merbau, Mempening, Garo Garo, Malas, and Dillenia. The heat released rate values showed the highest value of Malas as $375.52kW/m^2$, and Dillenia showed the lowest value as $133.30kW/m^2$. The data values were confirmed in the following order: Malas > Mempening > Garo Garo > Merbau > Dillenia. In case of the total heat release, it was measured in the following order: Mempening > Malas > Garo Garo > Merbau > Dillenia. The gas analysis results were that Dillenia showed the highest value of 0.034. Also, Mempening and Malas showed the lowest at 0.020 in the $CO/CO_2$. Min of mass reduction was shown as 74.79% Sargent cherry, on the other hand, Malas had a 83.52%. It showed a correlation between and of the CO and $CO_2$ generation and combustion characteristics of wood. The thermal decomposition temperature of the wood in the TGA were as follow that Merbau $348.07^{\circ}C$, Mempening $367.57^{\circ}C$, Garo Garo $350.59^{\circ}C$, Malas $352.41^{\circ}C$, Dillenia $364.33^{\circ}C$. The aim of this study is to determine the combustion properties of imported wood according to ISO 5660-1. And, based on the results of this study, we would proceed with further research for improving the fire safety of wood for construction.
