  • A research projects is currently being conducted to develop a nonlinear finite element analysis methods for predicting the structural behavior of reinforced concrete frame structures, exposed to fire. As part of this, reinforced concrete frames subjected to fire loads were analyzed using the nonlinear finite-element program DIANA. Two numerical steps are incorporated in this program. The first step carries out the nonlinear transient heat flow analysis associated with fire and the second step predicts the structural behavior of reinforced concrete frames subjected to the thermal histories predicted by first step. The complex features of structural behavior in fire conditions, such as thermal expansion, plasticity, cracking or crushing, and material properties changing with temperature are considered. A concrete material model based on nonlinear fracture mechanics to take cracking into account and plasticity models for concrete in compression and reinforcement steel were used. The material and analytical models developed in this paper are verified against the experimental data on simple reinforced concrete beams. The changes in thermal parameters are discussed from the point of view of changes of structure and chemical composition due to the high temperature exposure. Although, this study considers codes standard fire for reinforced concrete frame, any other time-temperature relationship can be easily incorporated.

  • This paper presents an investigation on the change in the statical behavior and the ultimate capacity of steel cable-stayed bridges after cable failure. Cable failure can occur due to fire, direct vehicle clash accidents, cable or anchorage fatigue, and so on. Moreover, the cable may be temporarily disconnected during cable replacement work. When cable failure occurs, the load, that was supported by the broken cable is first transferred to another cable. Then the structural state changes due to the interaction between the girder, mast, and cables. Moreover, it can be predicted that the ultimate capacity will decrease after cable failure, because of the loss of the support system. In this study, the analysis method is suggested to find the new equilibrium state after cable failure based on the theory of nonlinear finite element analysis. Moreover, the ultimate analysis method is also suggested to analyze the ultimate behavior of live loads after cable failure. For a more rational analysis, a three-step analysis procedure is suggested and used, which consisted of initial shape analysis, cable failure analysis, and live load analysis. Using this analysis method, an analytical study was performed to investigate the changes in the structural state and ultimate behavior of steel cable-stayed bridges.

  • Hydrogen is considered to be the most important future energy carrier in many applications reducing significantly greenhouse gas emissions, but the safety issues associated with hydrogen applications need to be investigated and fully understood to be applicable as the carrier. Therefore, there is a considerable demand for further research concerning the dispersion of hydrogen/air mixture clouds and the possible consequences of their ignition. In this study, the dispersion of hydrogen gas in atmosphere has been analysed with atmospheric condition by concerning the buoyancy of hydrogen. The hazard ranges to wind direction increase with wind speed and the stability of atmosphere. The concentration of hydrogen at just above ground is nearly zero due to buoyancy of hydrogen gas. Therefore, the ignition probability of hydrogen gas cloud is low and the hazard of explosion or fire associated with hydrogen gas is relatively low comparing with the other fuel gas such as propane or butane.

  • Experiments were performed for the real sized 12 reinforced concrete columns of 350${\times}$350${\times}$3350 mm with normal concrete in order to observe the fire-damaged behavior of these columns. Columns were heated according to the ISO heating curve. Main experimental parameters were: magnitude of axial load, heating time, cover thickness, and eccentricity. Effects of these parameters on the axial expansion and contraction, rotation, buckling, ISO fire resistance, and structural stability were experimentally quantified. It has been observed that the contraction rate of axial deformation was affected mostly by the duration of heating time and buckling of reinforcement or member by the magnitude of axial load, duration of heating time, cover thickness and eccentricity in order. Based on the experimental observations, ISO fire resistance criteria were qualiatively criticized.

  • Although structural concrete is well known for its good economic efficiency, it has limits of structural performance due to the low tensile strength, for which new structural members utilizing various concrete composite materials have been developed. Steel Fiber-Reinforced Concrete(SFRC) has great tensile strength, which is the one of the excellent composite material to complement the weakness of concrete, and it is also considered as a good alternative to prevent the explosive failure of high strength concrete under fire. Also, prestressed concrete members are of great advantages to long span structures and have greater shear strength compared to conventional reinforced concrete members. In this research, thus, a total of 22 direct shear test specimens were fabricated and tested to understand the shear behavior of Steel Fiber-Reinforced Prestressed Concrete(SFR-PSC) members, in which SFRC members combined with prestressing method. Based on the test results, the constitutive equations of shear behavior at crack interfaces were proposed, which provided good estimation on the shear behavior of the SFR-PSC direct shear test specimens.

  • To improve fire-resistance of a high strength concrete against spalling under elevated temperature, fibers can be mixed to provide flow paths of evaporated water to the surface of concrete when heated. In this study, the experiment of a column under fire and mechanical loads is conducted and the material model for predicting temperature of reinforcement steel bar and mechanical behavior of fiber-mixed high strength concrete is suggested. The material model in previous studies is modified by incorporating physical behavior of internal concrete and thermal characteristics of concrete at the elevated temperature. Thermo-mechanical analysis of the fiber-mixed high strength concrete column is conducted using the calibrated material model. The performance of the proposed material model is confirmed by comparing thermo-mechanical analysis results with the experiment of a column under fire and mechanical loads.

  • Unlike land fires, Fires on board a ship are not likely to be extinguished by skilled human resources using a variety of fire fighting equipments, but have to be brought under control on board a ship itself despite of difficult task. There are more cases of deaths from suffocation by smoke than from an increased temperature by heat in fires on board ships, because crew fail to secure a sufficient visibility range enough to escape from the scene of a fire or to leave the ship as early as possible. On the assumption that the height of ship's accommodation area increases from 2.0m to 2.3m comparable to the height of apartments on the ground in Korea, behaviors of fire smokes between the cases of 2.0m and 2.3m heights were compared and analyzed. Based on the blue print of the existing Training Ship "Hanbada", a new blueprint with the 30 cm height adjustment was additionally created. FDS (Fire Dynamic Simulator), which was created by the NIST in the United States and is the most widely distributed simulator for fires, was used to conduct a simulation and predict results. The results of simulation on the basis of temperature of $60^{\circ}C$ showed a safe evacuation period of time at the position 10m apart from the scene of a fire to increase by 55.8 seconds, when the height of ship's accommodation area increased from 2.0m to 2.3m. The results of simulation on the basis of visibility range of 6m showed the safe evacuation periods of time at the positions 10m, 20m and 30m apart from the scene of a fire to increase by 27.1 seconds, 109.2 seconds and 73.3 seconds, respectively, as the height of ship's accommodation area increased from 2.0m to 2.3m. This means that crew can escape more safely from a scene of fires on board when the height of ship's accommodation area is increased and equal to the height of living room in a building on land.

  • An experimental study was carried out on a reduced scale tunnel model to grasp the behavioral feature of fire-induced smoke in the long tunnels. Based on Froude modeling, the 1/50 scaled tunnel model (20 m long) was constructed by acrylic tubes and paraffin gas was released inside the tunnel to simulate the 20 MW fire-induced smoke. me test results show, that after approximately 2 minutes of fire generation, was descended from the tunnel ceiling through the decrease of buoyancy, then it was symmetrically propagated about 90 meters for 4 minutes before jet fans were operated. The smoke was effectively controlled when the jet fans were operated and an air stream velocity was getting closed to reach a critical velocity (the minimum air velocity that requires to suppress the smoke spreading against the longitudinal ventilation flow during the tunnel fire situations). It was also found out that a range of smoke was spreaded about 3 meters from the origin of fire but the range was not propagated to the escape direction anymore. The early stage of the In operation, however, showed that the smoke was hardly controlled. It means that the operation of emergency ventilation system has many dangerous factors such as an intercepting breathing zone.

  • Strain properties of concrete member which acts as an important factor in the stability of the concrete structure in the event of fire, significantly affected the characteristics of the coarse aggregate, which accounts for most of the volume. For this reason, there are many studies on concrete using artificial lightweight aggregate which has smaller thermal expansion deformation than granite coarse aggregate. But the research is mostly limited on concrete using clay-based lightweight aggregate. Therefore, in this study, the high temperature compressive strength and elastic modulus, thermal strain and total strain, high temperature creep strain of concrete was evaluated. As a result, remaining rate of high-temperature strength of concrete using lightweight aggregate is higher than concrete with general aggregate and it is determined to be advantageous in terms of structural safety and ensuring high-temperature strength from the result of the total strain by loading and strain of thermal expansion. In addition, in the case of high-temperature creep, concrete shrinkage is increased by rising loading and temperature regardless of the type of aggregate, and concrete using lightweight aggregate shows bigger shrinkage than concrete with a granite-based aggregate. From this result, it is determined to require additional consideration on a high temperature creep strain in case of maintaining high temperature like as duration of a fire although concrete using light weight aggregate is an advantage in reducing the thermal expansion strain of the fire.
