In plants, color is a powerful tool to attract insects and herbivores which act as pollinators and vehicles of seed dispersion. In particular, flower color has held key post for human with aesthetic value. Horticultural industry has developed methods to produce new and attractive color varieties in flowering plants. Carotenoids are one of the main pigments being responsible for red, orange, and yellow colors. Their biosynthetic pathway has been considered as a major target of metabolic engineering for color modification of flowers and fruits. Here, we review the diverse efforts to modify pigment phenotype by the control of carotenogenic gene expression and enzyme levels. Recent reports about regulating degradation and storage of carotenoids will be also summarized to help the creation of engineered flower with novel color phenotype which is not existed in nature.
Typical rose flowers, 'Red Corvette (red)', 'Nobless (pink)', 'Golden Metal (yellow)', and 'Rose Yumi (white)', were used as experimental materials to examine flower color changes as affected by pressing method and light treatment for four weeks and eight weeks by 2,000 lux fluorescent light at a 16 hours daylength. Pressing materials in silicagel mat resulted in the least change after pressing and light treatment for all kinds. On the contrary, an electric pressing device caused color to change to brown. Flower colors deteriorated the most by an electric pressing device made in Korea for pink rose; an electric pressing device made in Japan for white rose; and paper sheet made in Korea for red rose. The sequence of degree in severity of color change after pressing was pink, yellow, and white roses. Light treatment brought about the most extreme color change in yellow 'Nobless' rose, while other three cultivars were rather stable in change of color.

This study was conducted to improve the consumption of floriculture plants by researching preferences of consumers for the main types of cut flowers. We analyzed the results of surveys, carried out by a company, that were largely about roses, chrysanthemums, and lilies. After departmentalizing consumers into groups and analyzing the results through conjoint and cluster analysis, we found that consumers showed a higher rate of use based on price and vase life than on flower color and flower shape in roses. The groups of rose consumers preferred a price of 1000 won, spray type flower shape, vase life of 7-8 days, and red flower color. In chrysanthemums, consumers showed higher rate of use for flower color than for vase life, flower shape, and price. The groups of chrysanthemum consumers preferred a price of 1000 won, standard flower shape, 16-20 days vase life, and yellow flower color. In lilies, consumers showed higher use rate for flower shape than vase life, price, and flower color. Lily consumers preferred a price of 2000 won, large flower shape, 4-7 days vase life, and yellow flower color. Thus, the major cut flowers (rose, chrysanthemum, and lily) all showed highest use rates in for vase life. These results highlight the importance of understanding the characteristics of consumer interests. They also emphasize that we should plan and create market-oriented and consumer-oriented products to improve the consumption of floriculture plants.
Flower color is one of the main target traits in the flower breeding. Recently, technological advances in genetic engineering have been successfully reported the flower colors, such as blue roses and blue carnations that are impossible to develop by traditional breeding. Accumulated knowledge-based approaches for flavonoid biosynthesis enabled to introduce novel and unique colors into flowers. These flower color modifications have been made through the regulation of flavonoid metabolic pathway - control of endogenous gene expression and introduction of foreign genes to produce novel and specific flavonoids - and the introduction of transcription factors that are known to regulate sets of genes being involving in the flavonoid biosynthetic pathway. More empirical regulation of the flavonoids metabolism requires the understanding for regulatory mechanism of intrinsic flavonoids depending on the flower crops and the very sophisticated control of flavonoid metabolic flow. In this review, we summarized successful examples of flower color modification. It might be useful to deduce the strategy for the creation of exquisite colors in flower plants.

This is a study on relationship between soil pH and flower color and growth of Hibiscus siriacus L, looking for the pH range to result the most ideal flower color. I anticipate this study result will lay a foundation of improved breeding plan of Hibiscus siriacus L. According to the result of investigation and analysis on bleeding peculiarities by each soil pH, the numbers of leaves in Honghwarang and Younggwang reached the highest at pH 7: 188.73 and 135.87 respectively. Increased pH resulted the increased number of leaves. According to the result of investigation and analysis on color changes of four kinds of Hibiscus siriacus L. at various pH level, Honghwarang's L value gradually decreased from 17.05 to 12.26 at pH increase while a value increased from 16.37 to 20.91.
These studies were carried out to develop native Calanthe in Korea. Calanthe native to southern islands in korea has beautiful flowers with various color and sweet fragrance, and it has been reported to have very good ornamental value. Concerning the classified 57 lines had surveyed their characteristics during the three years, and confirmed which that had manifestation stably. And then, a line was developed and given a name of horticultural cultivar to ‘Saegdong’. The major characteristics of the selected line, ‘Saegdong’, were as follows. In its color of flower, sepal was reddish orange, petal was yellow and lip was yellow. ‘Saegdong’ had a bended-inner blooming type.
The objectives of this study were to isolate and the sequence of novel $F3'H$ gene related to an anthocyanin pathway, and to confirm the expression patterns of the gene involved in the flower color variations of chrysanthemum mutants. In this study, we isolated the full-length cDNAs and the genomic DNAs of an $F3'H$ gene from a wild type (WT) chrysanthemum (cv. Argus) and its three color mutants. The sequence analysis revealed a putative open reading frame of 1,527 bp that encodes a polypeptide of 509 amino acids. Sequence homology ranged from 97% to 99% between 'Argus' and its three color mutants. The sequence analysis from the genomic DNA revealed that the chrysanthemum $DgF3'H$ gene consisted of three exons and two introns spanning a 3,830 bp length. The sizes of the gene for three mutants ranged from a shorter size of 3,828 bp to a longer size of 3,838 bp when compared to the size of WT. The total size of the two introns was 2,157 bp for WT, but those for three color mutants ranged from 2,154 bp to 2,159 bp. A result of an RT-PCR analysis indicated that the color variations of the mutants AM1 and AM2 can be partly explained by the structural modification derived from the sequencial changes in the gene caused by gamma ray. A Southern blot analysis revealed that the $DgF3'H$ gene existing as multiple copies in the chrysanthemum genome. A systemic study will be further needed to provide a genetic mechanism responsible for the color mutation and to uncover any involvement of genetic elements for the expression of the $DgF3'H$ gene for the color variation in chrysanthemum.
A full-length cDNA and genomic DNA of a $leucoanthocyanidin$$dioxygenase$ ($DgLDOX$) gene was isolated from the petals of chrysanthemum 'Argus', and comparative features of the gene among three flower color mutants derived from a gamma-ray mutagenesis were characterized. The cDNA coding region of the gene was 1068 bp and was translated into 356 amino acids accordingly. The genomic DNA size was 1346 bp for 'Argus', while three mutants revealed ranges of 1363 to 1374 bp. A single intron between two coding exons for the $DgLDOX$ gene was found, of which size was 112 bp for 'Argus', but 128 or 137 bp for three flower color mutants, indicating that a genomic insertion in the intron occurred during the gamma-ray mutagenesis. DNA blot analysis revealed the $DgLDOX$ gene presenting as a single copy in the chrysanthemum genome. The $DgLDOX$ gene was expressed in both 'Argus' of light-pink color and two purple color mutants (AM1 and AM3) but had very weak expression in only white color mutant (AM2). The results demonstrated that variations in the flower color of the mutants might be associated with changes in the amino acid moieties in the coding exons or fragment insertions in the intron of the $DgLDOX$ gene, which potentially resulted in less expression of the gene in the white colored mutant.
We observed performance of segregation in flower color and type of hybrids which obtained from crossing of intra species in Hibiscus syriacus. Obtained results were followings. 1. The purple flower was dominance to the white one and this was presumed that was owing to cytoplasmic heredity. 2. Single and double petal of flower was presumed that was originated from factors of Ss and dd. 3. There was not variation in flower color and type of $F_1$ hybrid between 4 n and 2 n Hibiscus syriacus. 4. There were many variation of flower color among $F_1$ hybrids which abtained in open pollination of Hibiscus syriacus. 5. We could observe many flowers variegated with red color among $F_1$ hybrids which obtained in crossing between double petal flowers of Hibiscus syriacus.
A new spary chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflorum) cultivar 'Eye Ball' was developed from a cross between 'Rima' and 'Yen' followed by selections of seedlings and lines at the Flower Rearch Institute, Gyeongnam Agricultural Research and Extension Services (ARES) from 2002 to 2006. Its characteristics were investigated three times from 2004 to 2006 under forcing culture in spring and retarding culture in autumn. The natural flowering time of 'Eye Ball' was October 20th, but year-round production was possible by shading and lighting. Its flower was 3.1cm in diameter, and had 38.4 petals and 26.8 flowers per stem in autumn. Its petal was narrow (0.4 cm) and pink with green in color at the flower center. To flower in the short day condition, for 'Eye Ball' was about 47 days in spring, and 'Eye Ball' showed a vase life of 20.9 days in autumn. This cultivar was registered for a commercialization in 2007. 'Eye Ball' would be cultured under the greenhouse and rain shelter condition in Korea.
