  • This study examined the effects of cultural factors and demographic factors on the perceived appropriateness and likelihood of using five categories of inappropriate negotiation strategies. Five categories of inappropriate negotiation strategies consist of traditional competitive bargaining, attacking opponent's network, false promises, misrepresentation of information and inappropriate information gathering. Two kinds of cultural variables, Hofstede's cultural dimensions and 'Chemyon' dimensions were used as universal, etic variables versus indigenous, emic variables. Survey result shows age and gender had significant effects only for traditional competitive bargaining, but gender and personal negotiation style did not have any effects for the inappropriate strategies. Hofstede's dimensions as well as Chemyon dimensions had significant effect for perceived inappropriateness and likelihood of using inappropriate strategies. While both Chemyon and Hofstede's dimensions were significant, Chemyon accounted for more variance than Hofstede dimensions in most cases. This suggests Chemyon's vital role in explaining Korean negotiators' perception and attitude towards inappropriate negotiation strategies. Implications of the results and future research are discussed.

  • This study uses a macro-viewpoint to investigate how female world leaders' clothing behaviors are different by nation and culture. This study conducted a comparative study on clothing behavior by cultural block in order to understand similarities and differences based on Hofstede's cultural dimensions theory. The findings are as follows. First, the clothing styles of female world leaders are categorized into classical suit style, national traditional style, and eclectic style. Second, classic suit style is more often found in countries characterized by high individualism, low power distance index, and low avoidance index. The style represents individual activity and rationality as well as trust towards women acting in men's roles. Third, a national traditional style is found in countries featuring high collectivism, high power distance index, and high uncertainty avoidance index. These countries share a culture that emphasizes harmony with the whole, rather than any one given part; consequently, clothing style represents a national identity (or the roles as a national member) rather than that of the individual level. Fourth, an eclectic clothing style is expressed in a mixture of classical suits and a national traditional style that depends on how much Eastern and Western cultures are reasonably compromised or Eastern tradition and Western culture coexist.

East Asian countries and Korea especially received higher score on LTO cultural dimension, meaning it valued harmony, long term relations and saving for future. Also, in today's hyper competitive and evolving global climate, the ability to adapt quickly and also to be able to control one's emotion is highly valued individual competency. Previous research on Hofstede's cultural dimensions were conducted at mostly national or large group levels. However, in this study, Yoo's CVSCALE which allowed for individual level analysis on Hofstede's cultural dimensions were used to analyze multinational company's employees's long term orientations' influence on emotional regulation and change oriented organizational citizenship behavior. The survey conducted from 200 employees from major electronic company based in S city in Korea for two weeks period and the results indicated long term orientation positively influenced change oriented organizational citizenship behavior. Also emotional regulation mediated between long term orientation felt by individuals and change oriented organizational citizenship behavior. Such results validated previous studies that indicated emotional regulation as possible antecedents of individual proactive behaviors such as change organizational citizenship behavior and long term oriented view as another potential antecedent of change oriented organizational citizenship behavior in multinational corporation setting.

  • The objective of the study was to find out whether the Super Bowl adverts with high Ad Meter scores had more advertising appeals related to U.S. culture in Hofstede's dimensions. The significance of the study lies in the analysis on U.S. consumer preferences on adverts in terms of culture under one of the most representative American sport event: Super Bowl. The study was based on a content analysis of top and bottom 10 Super Bowl adverts during a period of consecutive seven years 2005 through 2011. The top and bottom ten were grouped based on the Ad Meter scores by the USA Today. The number of adverts interpreted by two coders along with the author was 139. The coding results implies that adverts in the top 10 group carried more appeals connected to US culture in Hofstede dimensions, such as youth, untamed, and magic in uncertainty avoidance dimension. Meanwhile, such appeals as ornamental, vain, and status in high power distance dimension were mainly found in the bottom 10 adverts group. Grounded on the findings from the content analysis, links between the score levels and the presence of certain appeals may offer marketers a hint on what appeals they emphasize when producing adverts in a certain cultural bound, let alone Super Bowl adverts targeting TV viewers in the U. S. A.

  • This study analyzed valid samples of 707 units collected by conducting paper and online surveys on the Korean, the Chinese, the American, and the Japanese. The result showed that a significant causal relationship exists between power distance and pull motivation as well as collectivism and push motivation, which led to a conclusion that developing travel packages that can strengthen bonding of fraternal societies through various events and attractions is effective for respondents from Asian countries. On the other hand, Americans turned out to prefer practical plans, which could provide individual's needs and preferences, for example, a self-healing package. This study, using a simple survey, may have a limitation in that it does not allow the participants to express their opinions. However, the study is meaningful that it made a theoretical contribution utilizing Hofstede's cultural dimensions index, two types of motivation, and theories of customer satisfaction and revisit intention. It also has a practical implication in that it proposes the most optimal and applicable overseas travel marketing strategy by comparing cultural traits of each country.
