Applications of a Hybrid System Coupled with Ultraviolet and Biofiltration for the Treatment of VOCs (휘발성유기화합물 처리를 위한 고도산화법과 고분자 담체 바이오필터 결합시스템의 적용)

  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from various industrial sources commonly consist of biodegradable chemicals and recalcitrant compounds. Therefore, it is not effective to employ a single method to treat such mixtures. In this study, a novel hybrid system coupled with a ultraviolet (UV) photolysis reactor and a biofilter in a series was developed and evaluated using toluene and TCE as model VOCs. When only TCE was applied to the UV reactor, greater than 99% of TCE was degraded and the concentration of soluble byproducts from photo-oxidation reaction increased significantly. However, the toluene and TCE mixture was not effectively degraded by the UV photo-oxidation standalone process. The hybrid system showed high toluene removal efficiencies, and TCE degradation at a low toluene/TCE ratio was improved by UV pretreatment. These findings indicated that the UV photo-oxidation were effective for TCE degradation when the concentration of toluene in the mixture was relatively low. A restively high toluene content in the mixture resulted in an inhibition of TCE degradation. Thus, chemical interactions in both photo-oxidation and biodegradation need to be carefully considered to enhance overall performance of the hybrid system.

  • clathrate compound란 호스트 분자가 수소 결합에 의하여 3차원 골격구조를 만들고, 이 격자 내부의 동공으로 저분자량의 기체 게스트 분자가 포집되며 형성되는 고체 결정 화합물이다. 현재까지 다양한 호스트 분자가 clathrate 화합물을 형성하는 것으로 보고되어 있으며, 이 중 유기물인 hydroquinone 역시 clathrate compound를 형성할 수 있는 것으로 알려져 있다. clathrate compound는 작은 고체 부피 내부에 막대한 양의 기체 분자를 저장할 수 있는 특성을 지니고 있기 때문에, 에너지 가스의 저장/수송이나 혼합 가스의 선택적 분리와 같은 다양한 응용을 위한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 clathrate compound를 형성하는 유기 호스트 분자인 hydroquinone을 이용하여 다양한 기체분자들에 대한 포집 거동을 파악하였다. 순수 기체로는 $N_2$, $H_2$, $CO_2$, $CH_4$의 4종류를 가지고 고압 반응기에서 50bar의 압력, 상온에서의 반응 조건으로 반응을 시켰다. 이렇게 형성된 반응 샘플들은 clathrate 형성 여부(기체의 포집 여부)를 확인하기 위하여 x-ray 회절을 통한 고체 결정 구조 분석을 수행하였다. 또한 순수 기체 이외에 다양한 비율(20%, 40%, 60%, 80%)의 조성을 갖는 $CO_2+N_2$ 혼합가스를 이용하여 clathrate compound의 형성과 조성 분석을 수행하였는데, x-ray 회절 분석과 13C 고체 NMR 분석을 통해 미세 구조 분석 연구를 수행하였고, Raman분석을 통하여 그 조성을 확인하였다. 본 연구에서 얻어진 결과는 기체의 저장/수송이나 혼합 가스의 선택적 분리와 같은 응용 분야에서 중요한 정보를 제공할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

Analysis on Ignition Delay Time According to the Ratio of Bio-aviation Fuel in Jet A-1 Mixture (바이오항공유의 함량 변화에 따른 점화지연특성 분석)

  • In this study, the ignition delay time of blended aviation fuels was measured and analyzed to confirm the characteristic of ignition delay according to the blending ratio of bio-aviation fuel to petroleum-based aviation fuel. The ignition delay time of bio-aviation fuel(Bio-6308) was shorter than that of petroleum-based aviation fuel(Jet A-1) at all measured temperatures; further, the ignition delay time of the blended aviation fuels shortened as the ratio of Bio-6308 increased. It was confirmed that the aromatic compounds constituting the Jet A-1 affect these results; this was done by comparing the obtained ignition delay time with that of n-heptane/Toluene.

Volatile Flavor Components in Green Tea Blended with Parched Naked Barley (볶은 쌀보리를 혼합한 녹차의 휘발성 향기성분)

  • To produce a new tea with a good flavor and functional properties using green tea of low quality, naked barley and barley were selected to blend with the green tea. The simultaneous distillation extraction method (SDE) using Likens and Nickerson's extraction apparatus was used to extract the volatile flavor compounds from the samples. The concentrated flavor extracts were analyzed and identified by GC and GC-MS. The GC patterns of the flavor components in two parched barleys were very different. The main volatile flavor components in two of the samples were alkyl pyrazines. Compounds including 3-methylbutanal, 2-methylbutanal, dihydro-2-methyl-3(2H)-furanone, 2,5-dimethyl pyrazine, and 3-ethyl-2.5-dimethyl pyrazine were isolated from the naked barley. Compounds including thiophenes, thiazoles, sulfides, and pyrroles with burnt odor were isolated from the barley. The parched naked barley was better than barley for adding to green tea. The main aroma components of the green tea blended with the naked barley were hexanol, hexanal, trans-2-hexenal, ${\beta}$-ionone, ${\alpha}$-ionone, alkyl pyrazines, 3-methylbutanal, 2-methylbutanal, and furfural.

Characteristics on Chemical Activation and VOCs Adsorption of Activated Carbon according to Mixing Ratio of Anthracite and Lignite (활성탄 제조시 유·무연탄 혼합에 따른 화학적 활성화 및 휘발성유기화합물 흡착 특성)

  • In this study, to improve the low surface area of domestic anthracite as raw materials of activated carbon, characteristics on chemical activation and VOCs adsorption of activated carbon according to mixing ratio of anthracite and lignite. For these, properties of raw materials, parameter characteristics of preparation processes for activated carbon, and VOCs adsorption characteristic of the prepared activated carbon are analyzed. The experimental results showed that, the domestic anthracite had disadvantages of high contents for ash and lead, arsenic, which were exceeded for the heavy metal limits, in the properties of raw materials. To improve these diadvantages, using the mixing ratio of anthracite and lignite, and the optimum conditions for pretreatment, activation, washing, and pellitization process, the activated carbon had a range of BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) surface area of $1,154{\sim}1,420m^2g^{-1}$ with mesopore development and hydrophobic surface property. The carbons were satisfied with the quality standard for granular activated carbon, and had similar physicochemical properties with the commercial activated carbon. The minimum mixing condition for commercial VOCs activated carbon performance must have the caloric value of above $5,640kcal\;kg^{-1}$, and the carbon had higher adsorption capacity with order of xylene > toluene > benzene according to more higher molcular weight and hydrophobic property.

Phenolic Compounds from the Fruits of Paulownia coreana Uyeki (오동나무 열매 추출물의 페놀성 화합물)

  • Paulownia coreana Uyeki fruits were collected, extracted with acetone-$H_2O$ (7:3, v /v), fractionated with n-hexane, methylene chloride, and ethyl acetate, then freeze dried to give some dark brown powder. The ethyl acetate soluble mixture was chromatographed on a Sephadex LH-20 column using a series of aqueous methanol and ethanol-hexane mixture as eluents. Spectrometric analysis such as NMR and MS including TLC were performed to establish the structures of the isolated compounds. From the ethyl acetate fraction, one phenolic acid (I) and five flavonoids (II~VI) and were isolated and elucidated. The antioxidative activities were tested on the isolated compounds, crude and fractionated extractives by DPPH radical scavenging method. The result showed that caffeic acid, kaempferol, luteolin, quercetin and the EtOAc soluble fraction exhibited higher activities than those of ${\alpha}$-tocopherol and BHT.

Energy Recovery via Pyrolysis of Waste Tire Rubber : Desulfurization Effect of Pyrolysis Oil by Adding Waste Polypropylene (폐타이어의 열분해를 통한 에너지화 : 폐폴리프로필렌 첨가 시 열분해 오일의 탈황 효과)

  • In this study, waste tire rubbers were pyrolyzed in a lab-scale pyrolysis plant equipped with a fluidized bed reactor in a temperature ranges of $450-650^{\circ}C$. The main object of this work is to investigate the properties of pyrolysis oil with reaction temperatures and the behavior of sulfur in the products when waste polypropylene was added for co-pyrolysis. The maximum yield of oil was about 52wt.% at the reaction temperature of $456^{\circ}C$. From GC-MS analysis, the pyrolysis oils consisted mainly of limonene, toluene, xylene, styrene, trimethylbenzene, methylnaphthalenes and some heteroatom(sulfur and nitrogen)-containing compounds. The addition of waste polypropylene resulted in decrease in sulfur contents of the pyrolysis oils.

고연소속도 추진제용 연소촉매 연구

  • 고연소속도 HTPB/AP 추진제를 얻기 위하여 현재 각광받고 있는 3종의 철화합물 연소촉매를 선정하여 연소속도 증진효과와 기계적 특성, 공정성 및 노화특성에 미치는 영향을 검토하였다. 사용한 철 화합물은 HTPB 프리폴리머에 silicone-ferrocene이 그라프트된 $BUTACENE^$\circledR$$ 과 결합제 역할을 하는 acylaziridinyl ferrocene(AAF), 그리고 입자크기가 30nm인 $NANOCAT^$\circledR$$ superfine iron oxide(SFIO)이었다. 이들 철 화합물을 추진제에 적용한 결과 공정성의 경우 $BUTACENE^$\circledR$$ 은 혼합점도가 높았으나 pot life의 감소는 없었으며 AAF와 SFIO는 혼합점도는 비교적 낮은 반면 pot life가 현저히 감소하는 경향을 보였다. 추진제의 노화거동은 연소촉매를 사용하지 않았을 때보다 저하되었으나 metal deactivating 산화방지제인 $PRO-TECH^$\circledR$$ 과 함께 사용할 경우 공정성 및 노화특성 모두 바람직한 수준으로 향상되었다. 기계적 특성은 SFIO를 제외하고는 저하되었으며 $BUTACENE^$\circledR$$ 은 프리폴리머로서, AAF는 결합제로서의 기능이 다소 미흡하였다. 한편 연소촉매의 함량에 따른 촉매효과는 AAF>SFIO>$BUTACENE^$\circledR$$ 순이었고 철 함량 측면에서는 AAF>$BUTACENE^$\circledR$$ >SFIO 순이었다.

Strength Change of Concrete with Crushed Oyster Shell by the Addition of Ethylbenzene (에틸벤젠에 의한 굴폐각 혼합공시체의 압축강도 변화 특성)

  • The development of contaminated sites often requires foundation concrete to be placed in contact with soils contaminated with organic compounds. There is a common perception that organic compounds affect the setting and hardening of concrete, giving a reduced long-term strength. In this study, unconfined compressive strength tests for concrete cured in Ethylbenzene were performed. The possibility of byproduct to be used for aggregate of concretes as materials of construction was also evaluated by carring out the investigation of the characteristics of the mixture of concrete and crushed oyster shell which is treated as waste material and often illegally disposed at coastal oyster production site. The transformation of strength characteristics was investigated by varying the blending ratio of fly ash.

Antioxidant Component and Sensory Evaluation of Mixed Cereals (혼합잡곡의 항산화 물질과 기호도)

  • To improve functionality of rice, we manufactured mixed cereals and mixed cereals with taste materials and evaluated their antioxidant component (ascorbic acid, tocopherols, polyphenols and flavonoids) contents and sensory evaluation. Ascorbic acid content in water extract of the control was 6.68 mg%, and mixed cereals were 18.23 and 21.84 mg%, respectively. Ascorbic acid content in methanol extract of the control was lower than those of mixed cereals too. ${\beta}$-Tocopherol was the only tocopherol detected in the control. However, tocopherols detected in mixed cereals were ${\alpha}$-, ${\beta}$-. ${\gamma}$-, ${\delta}$-tocopherol and ${\alpha}$-, ${\gamma}$-tocotrienol, with a highest content of ${\gamma}$-tocopherol. Total tocophenols content of the control was 1.26 mg%, whereas, those of mixed cereals were 19.24 and 39.32 mg%, respectively. Polyphenols contents in water extract of the control was 2.20 mg%, and mixed cereals were 14.38 and 21.91 mg%, respectively. In addition, polyphenols contents in methanol extract of mixed cereals were higher than that of the control, too. Flavonoids were undetected in water extract of the control, but flavonoids contents of mixed cereals were 42.45 and 32.54 mg%, respectively. In methanol extracts, flavonoids contents of the control and mixed cereals were not significantly different. The sensory parameters including taste, flavor, color, texture and overall acceptance of control were lower than those of mixed cereals. Especially, mixed cereals with taste materials was the highest acceptance.
