  • When a system consisting of rigid and flexible bodies is optimized to improve its dynamic characteristics, its eigenfrequencies are typically maximized. While topology optimization formulations dealing with simultaneous design of a system of rigid and flexible bodies are available, studies on eigenvalue maximization of the system are rare. In particular, no work has solved for the case when the target frequency becomes one of the repeated eigenfrequencies. The problem involving repeated eigenfrequencies is solved in this study, and a topology optimization formulation and sensitivity analysis are presented. Further, several numerical case studies are considered to demonstrate the validity of the proposed formulation.

  • A thermo-poro-elastic constitutive model of unidirectionally fiber-reinforced composite materials is suggested by extending the unmixing-mixing scheme which is based upon composite micromechanics. The strain components of thermal expansion due to a temperature change, gas pressure in pores, and chemical shrinkage are included in the constitutive model. On purpose to verify the derived constitutive relations, the representative volume element of two-dimensional lamina subject to various loading conditions is analyzed by the finite element method. The overall stress and strain responses are obtained, and compared with the predicted values by the unmixing-mixing scheme. The numerical results show the usefulness of the proposed model to predict the thermoelastic behavior of porous composites.

  • This paper intends to develop the rotor track and balance (RTB) algorithm using the nonlinear RTB models and a real-coded hybrid genetic algorithm. The RTB response data computed using the trim solutions with variation of the adjustment parameters have been used to build nonlinear RTB models based on the quadratic interpolation functions. Nonlinear programming problems to minimize the track deviations and the airframe vibration responses have been formulated to find optimum settings of balance weights, trim-tab deflections, and pitch-link lengths of each blade. The results are efficiently resolved using the real-coded genetic algorithm hybridized with the particle swarm optimization techniques for convergence acceleration. The nonlinear RTB models and the optimized RTB parameters have been compared with those computed using the linear models to validate the proposed techniques. The results showed that the nonlinear models lead to more accurate models and reduced RTB responses than the linear counterpart.

  • The application of conventional method for optimizing firm water supply and hydro-electric power generation has some limitation during abnormal or extreme drought periods. Hashimoto et al. (1982) suggested there risk evaluation criteria such as reliability, resilience, and vulnerability. These three criteria have been incorporated into a mixed-integer programming model for evaluating the possible performance of water- supply reservoir (Moy et al., 1986; Srinivasan et al., 1999). However, till now, these kind of researches have been conducted only for water-supply reservoir. Therefore there have been no other study for multi-purpose dam including hydro-electric power generation. This study presents an improved formulation of the previous model for evaluating a multi-purpose reservoir system operation considering water supply and hydro-electric power generation. The modified model was applied to the Daechung multi-purpose reservoir system in the Keum river basin to demonstrate the efficiency of the improved formulation.

  • In this paper, we propose a new efficient hybrid-mixed C(sup)0 curved beam element with the optimal interpolation functions determined from numerical tests, which gives very accurate locking-free two-node curved beam element. In the element level, the stress parameters are eliminated from the stationary condition and the nodeless degrees of freedom are also removed by static condensation so that a standard six-by-six stiffness matrix is finally obtained. The numeri cal benchmark problems show that the element with cubic displacement functions and quadratic stress functions is the most efficient.

  • Cracks in rubber bonded to a rigid material such as steel are analyzed with the aid of a mixed finite element technique. Firstly the weak form is derived for finite element analysis of an incompressible material, and the Mooney-Rivlin form is assumed for the constitutive modeling of rubber. The numerical results from finite element analysis is examined to confirm the accuracy and convergence of solution by way of comparison to other numerical results. The interpretation of the J-integral for large elastic deformation as the energy release rate is confirmed, and the J-integral is calculated for varing crack length. The crack growth stability is discussed using the result of finite element analysis.

  • In this paper, we used various shear deformation functions for modelling isotropic, symmetric composite and sandwich plates discretized by a mixed finite element method based on the Lagrangian/Hermite interpolation functions. These shear deformation theories uses polynomial, trigonometric, hyperbolic and exponential functions through the thickness direction, allowing for zero transverse shear stresses at the top and bottom surfaces of the plate. All shear deformation functions are compared with other available analytical/3D elasticity solutions, are predicted the reasonable accuracy for investigated problems. Particularly, The present results show that the use of exponential shear deformation theory (Karama et al. 2003; Aydogu 2009) provides very good solutions for composite and sandwich plates.

  • In this paper, a Mixed Integer Linear Programming(MILP) approach for solving optimal Weapon-Target Assignment(WTA) problem of multiple dissimilar Closed-In Weapon Systems (CIWS) is proposed. Generally, WTA problems are formulated in nonlinear mixed integer optimization form, which often requires impractical exhaustive search to optimize. However, transforming the problem into a structured MILP problem enables global optimization with an acceptable computational load. The problem of interest considers defense against several threats approaching the asset from various directions, with different time of arrival. Moreover, we consider multiple dissimilar CIWSs defending the asset. We derive a MILP form of the given nonlinear WTA problem. The formulated MILP problem is implemented with a commercial optimizer, and the optimization result is proposed.

  • The purpose of this research work is to demonstrate a successful application of hybrid-mixed formulation and nodeless degrees of freedom in developing a very accurate in-plane curved beam element for free vibration analysis. To resolve the numerical difficulties due to the spurious constraints, the present element, based on the Hellinger-Reissner variational principle and considering the effect of shear deformation, employed consistent stress parameters corresponding to cubic displacement polynomials with additional nodeless degrees. The stress parameters were eliminated by the stationary condition, and the nodeless degrees were condensed by Guyan Reduction. Several numerical examples indicated that the property of the mass matrix as well as that of the stiffness matrix have a great effect on the numerical performance. The element with consistent mass matrix produced best results on convergence and accuracy in the numerical analysis of Eigenvalue problems. Also, the higher-order mixed curved beam element showed a superior numerical behavior for the free vibration analyses.

  • In this study, a refined beam analysis model has been developed for multi-celled composite blades with elliptic cross-sections. Reissner's semi-complimentary energy functional is introduced to describe the beam theory and also to deal with the mixed-nature of the formulation. The wail of elliptic sections is discretized into finite number of elements along the contour line and Gauss integration is applied to obtain the section properties. For each cell of the section, a total of four continuity conditions are used to impose proper constraints for the section. The theory is applied to single- and double-celled composite blades with elliptic cross-sections and is validated with detailed finite element analysis results.
