This study investigates a new method of using a concrete disk to calculate stress intensity factor (SIF) for mixed mode cases. The results indicate that the disk method is more accurate than three point bending test (TPB) in obtaining correct SIF values for mixed mode fracture propagation. Stress intensity factors $K_{I}$ and $K_{II}$ are calculated using a center notched disk subjected to splitting load. The notch angle is calculated by finite element (FEM). Fracture toughness $K_\textsc{k}$ of the concrete is obtained from the load intensities at the initiation of crack propagation. According to the finite element analysis(FEA) and disk test, the results show that mode I and mixed mode cracks propagate toward the directions of crack face and loading point, respectively. The results from FEA with maximum stress theory compare well with the experimental date. Unlike TPB method where an accurate fracture toughness value is difficult to obtain due to the irregular shape of load deflection curve and delayed final crack propagation (following slow stable cracking). fracture toughness value is easily measured in the disk test from the crack initial load. Therefore, it is safe to conclude that disk method is more advantageous than TPB method in analyzing combined mode fracture problems.
In this paper, an evaluation method of fracture toughness to apply interfacial fracture mechanics was investigated in adhesively bonded double-cantilever beam (DCB) joints. Four types of adhesively bonded DCB joints with an interface crack were prepared for analyses of the stress intensity factors using boundary element method(BEM) and the fracture toughness test. From the results of BEM analysis and fracture toughness experiments, it is found that the stress intensity factor, K1 is a parameter driving the fracture of adhesively bonded joints. Also, the evaluation method of fracture toughness by separated stress intensity factors of mixed mode cracks was proposed and the influences of mode components for its fracture toughness are investigated in adhesively bonded DCB joints.
The work factor approach, so-called single specimen technique could be used to determine energy release rate from a single test record for unidirectional CLS specimen. In the present study, the work factor approach was extended to determine the mixed-mode fracture toughness of multi-directional graphite/epoxy laminated composites. Multi-directional CLS specimens were used for fracture tests. The stacking sequences used for the lap and the strap were $[90_2/0_2]_s/[0_4/90_4]_s$ and $[0/\pm45/0]_s/[0_2/\pm45_2/0_2]_2$, respectively. For both cases, the fracture toughness determined from the work factor approach was compared with that determined from the compliance method. It was found that both methods produced fracture toughness within a maximum 15% difference for each stacking sequence. The fractography analysis also showed that the fiber bridging occurred for$[0/\pm45/0]_s/[0_2/\pm45_2/0_2]_2$ case while it did not occur for $[90_2/0_2]_s/[0_4/90_4]_s$ case.
Composite patch repair of cracked aircraft structures has been accepted as one of improving fatigue life and attaining better structural integrity. Analysis for the stress intensity factor at the skin/stiffener structure with inclined central crack repaired by composite stiffened panels are developed. A numerical investigation was conducted to characterize the fracture behavior and crack growth behavior. In order to investigate the crack growth direction, maximum tangential stress(MTS) criteria is used. The main objective of this research is the validation of the inclined crack patching design. In this paper, the reduction of stress intensity factors at the crack-tip and prediction of crack growth direction are determined to evaluate the effects of various non-dimensional design parameter including; composite patch thickness and stiffener distance. The research on cracked structure subjected to mixed mode loading is accomplished and it is evident that more work using different approaches is necessary.
This study was carried out to investigate the fracture criterion of glulam. The mixed mode fracture of glulam was investigated by means of single edge notched specimens with various crack inclination in the longitudinal-radial plane. While fracture of wood is not completely understood, the study on linear-elastic fracture mechanics is a rational and valuable tool for studying the strength behavior of glulam. The results are summarized as follows : 1. Glue line has no effect on fracture strength. 2. There is a definite interaction between fracture toughness $K_I$ and $K_{II}$ during the mixed mode fracture of glulam. Several criterions for mixed mode failure were compared. The criterion was expressed in the following form: $(\frac{K_I}{K_{IC}})^2+(\frac{K_{II}}{K_{IIC}})^2=1$ 3. As crack inclination increases, $K_{IC}$ value and $K_{IIC}$ value decreases. The equations relating crack angle to $K_{IC}$ and $K_{IIC}$, respectively, were obtained as follows; $K_{IC}$ = -77.42${\gamma}$+153.72 ($R^2$ = 0.78) $K_{IIC}$ = -9.17${\gamma}$+34.90 ($R^2$ = 0.48)
Under the mixed mode loading, it has been known that the influence of non-singular terms in the stress fields is serious, because the critical distance, ${\gamma}_o$ - the distance of nonlinear elastic region near the crack tip has no negligible value. In this paper, it has been studied on the influence of non-singular terms, T-stress, and the case of T=0, ${\sigma}cos^2{\beta}$, ${\sigma}cos(2{\beta})$ and $0.05{\sigma}cos(2{\beta})$, under uniaxial tension and compression. It has been seen that the T-stress of ${\sigma}cos(2{\beta})$ has better than others as comparing to the experimental data.
This study was carried out to investigate the fracture behavior and the fracture criterion of yellow lauan(Shorea spp.), when has used for furniture and wood structures, and to offer a reliability for wood structure and basic data for wood fracture criterion in experiments which are fracture tested under mode I, mode II and mixed mode loading condition. The results were summarized as follows; 1. Fractures in specimens which have inclined grain in yellow lauan procedeed from crack tip in the radial direction along the grain. 2. In yellow lauan, $K_{IC}RL$ was 42.1kg/$cm^{3/2}$ and $K_{IIC}RL$ was 15.8kg/$cm^{3/2}$. 3. The fracture criteria of lauan were; ($K_I/K_{IC}$)+($K_{II}/K_{IIC}$)=1 in RL system with inclined grain at $45^{\circ}$, ($K_I/K_{IC}$)+$(K_{II}/K_{IIC})^2$=1 with inclined grain at $15^{\circ}$ and $(K_I/K_{IC})^2$+$(K_{II}/K_{IIC})^2$=1 with inclined grain at $30^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, $75^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$, respectively. 4. The fracture criterion of wood could vary with the species, and the load applying condition. In order to measure the fracture criterion strictly, along with standardization of specimen geometry a large amount of experimental data is needed. 5. $K_{IC}$(critical stress intensity factor) can be predicted by grain angle. As the grain inclined angle increased, $K_{IC}$ and $K_{IIC}$ are increased.
