  • In this study, the mechanical properties of early-age concrete were evaluated by mixing the electric arc furnace oxidizing slag fine aggregate with 30% and 50% replacement ratio. Slump test, air content test and unit volume weight test were performed for fresh concrete, and compressive strength test and chloride penetration experiments were carried out in hardened concrete. The compressive strength increased up to 7 days of curing age with increasing replacement ratio of the electric furnace oxidizing slag, but the strength decreased to 90% level of OPC concrete at 28 days of age. Regarding the result of chloride penetration test, no significant differences from OPC concrete were evaluated, which shows a feasibility of application to concrete aggregate.

  • This paper is aimed to evaluate the mechanical properties and durability of high-flowable retaining wall material (RWM) with different levels of steel fiber (SF) content. To produce the specimens of RWM, some chemical agents such as superplasticizer (SP), air-entrained agent (AEA) and viscosity modifying agent (VMA) were added in the fresh RWM. The compressive and split tensile strength measurements were performed on the hardened RWM specimens at the predetermined periods. Additionally, surface electric resistivity and absorption tests according to ASTM standards were carried out to examine mechanical properties of RWM mixes. The durable performances such as chloride ions penetrability and freezing-thawing resistance of RWM mixes were experimentally investigated. As resutls, it was found that the performance of RWM mix with SF were much better than that without SF, especially at the 2% addition of SF. Thus, it is noted that the proper addition of SF in the RWM mix may have a beneficial effect to improve mechanical properties and durability of RWM mixes.

  • The objective of the paper is to experimentally investigate the effect of commercially avaliable fiber types such as polypropylene (PP), nylon (NY), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and cellulose (CL) on the engineering properties of concrete for pavement application. The results, showed the fluidity tends to decrease with fibers addition compared to that of plain concrete. As for the effect of fiber types on fluidity loss, use of NY appear to give the most favorable results among all of the fiber types investigated in this study while the effect of the fibers on air content was negligible. For the properties of hardened concrete, compressive and flexural strengths increased with fibers compared to plain concrete. The contribution of NY fibers to strength was the highest followed in the order by NY, PVA, PP, and CL. However, in the case of the splitting tensile strength, its values were increased with NY and PP only. For porosity based on MIP(mercury intrusion penetration) method, the number of around 1 was observed when NY was mixed resulting in increased cumulated amounts of porosity compared with that of plain mix. Thus, based on the consideration of fluidity and strength it was found that the addition of NY fiber showed the optimal results under the conditions applied in this study.

  • The effects of polymer-cement ratio, antifoamer content and shrinkage-reducing agent content on the air content, setting time, drying shrinkage and strength of high-fluidity polymer-modified mortars using redispersible polymer powder are examined. As a result, the air content of the polymer-modified mortars using redispersible polymer powder tends to decrease nth increasing polymer-cement ratio and antifoamer content. Regardless of the antifoamer content, the setting time of the polymer-modified mortars using redispersible polymer powder tends to delayed with increasing polymer-cement ratio. Irrespective of the antifoamer content, the drying shrinkage of the polymer-modified mortars using redispersible polymer powder tend to decrease with increasing polymer-cement ratio and shrinkage-reducing agent content. Regardless of the antifoamer content, the flexural and tensile strengths of the polymer-modified mortars using redispersible polymer powder tends to increase with increasing polymer-cement ratio, and tend to decrease with increasing shrinkage-reducing agent content. However, the compressive strength of the polymer-modified mortars using redispersible polymer powder decreases with increasing polymer-cement ratio and shrinkage-reducing agent content.

  • In this study, the effect of blast furnace slag and gypsum addition on strength development of fly ash substituted concrete is investigated experimentally. As a result, the fluidity represented a similar or larger level than that of OPC but showed a tendency to decrease the fluidity according to the increase in the replacement level of BS and GS for the FA replacement concrete. In the case of the air content, although it showed a larger decrease compared to that of OPC, it also represented that BS and GS did not affect the air content significantly. Regarding the compressive strength in the case of the replacement of BS and GS for the FA 10% replacement concrete, it showed a higher early strength than OPC. Whereas, in the case of the BS 5% replacement and GS 1% incorporation for the FA 10% replacement concrete showed the most excellent performance due to its high strength. In the correlation of the compressive strength according to the kinds of admixtures, it was evident that the GS incorporation played an important role in high strength gain.

  • GGBFS(Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag) is one of the most actively used mineral admixtures with excellent long-aged strength and chloride diffusion resistance. Unlike Standard covering GGBFS in Japan and the U.K., the domestic standard for GGBFS does not contain low fineness of GGBFS under 4000 grade. In this paper, several basic tests are carried out for the concrete with 3,000 grade GGBFS concrete and ternary blended concrete for reducing hydration heat by mixing 4,000 grade GGBFS and fly ash, such as fresh concrete properties, compressive strength, and shrinkage properties. The air content and slump between the ternary blended concrete and the concrete with low-fineness GGBFS showed the similar level, and the results of difference in setting time from them were less than 20 minutes, showing no significant difference. In the evaluation of compressive strength and shrinkage characteristics, the ternary blended concrete showed lower long-aged strength and higher shrinkage than the low-fineness GGBFS concrete.

  • The objective of this paper is to obtain the basic data in order to develop an eco-friendly concrete through evaluation on the properties of polymer cement mortar and concrete using PVAc (Polyvinyl Acetate), as a kind of water-soluble polymer. For this purpose, the physical properties of cement mortar and concrete which does not contain the PVAc as the control batch were compared and analyzed with those using the PVAc. And then, the replacement amount of the PVAc was 3%, 6%, 9% and 12% by binder, respectively. And also, the properties of concrete using the PVAc were evaluated, by adding an antifoaming agent in order to control the air contents increasing with an increase of amount of polymer usage. As a result, in the case of polymer cement mortar using the PVAc, it presented that the compressive strength reduced, while the performance of flexural strength and drying shrinkage increased. When the replacement of the PVAc was 6% within concrete, the compressive, tensile, flexural strength and elastic modulus were increased.

  • In order to evaluate corrosion resistance of steel fiber-reinforced concrete, accelerated chloride migration and surface resistivity tests were conducted. In addition air content of fresh concrete, compressive strength and water absorption were measured for investigating fundamental characteristics of concrete. Two different water-cement ratios(0.44, 0.5) and three steel fiber contents(0.25%, 0.5%, 1%) were considered as variables. Note that all specimens cast with same compaction work. As a results, corrosion resistance decreased as steel fiber contents increased regardless of water-cement ratio when the concrete was compacted with same amount of work done. However, for concrete with same steel fiber content, the lower water-cement ratio showed the better corrosion resistance. It is found that enhancement of fluidity and enough compaction should be done for corrosion resistance of SFRC.

  • Concrete is strong on the compressive property, but weak on the tensile and flexural properties. To improve these problems, the reinforcing bar is used in concrete. But porous concrete with steel fiber has a weak point when exposed to air, because porous concrete has the vast continuous void on its inside and steel fiber is easily rusted by air. For these reasons, this study investigated the void ratio, compressive strength, bending strength and bending toughness as steel fiber mixing ratio and target void ratio. From test results, actual void ratio and strength properties increased as the mixing ratio of steel fiber increase. In case the mixing ratio of steel fiber over the fixed ratio, strength is decreased. And from the toughness evaluation, compared to the porous concrete which isn't mixed with steel fiber, the deflection variation efficiency is remarkably improved. Consequently we can confirm the possibility of porous concrete with steel fiber for the secondary product and pavement material to improve strength and bending resistance efficiency.

  • The purpose of this experimental research is to estimate compressive strength and resistance to freezing and thawing of recycled aggregate concrete containing ground granulated blast furnace slag. For this purpose, concrete specimens according to substitution ratio of recycled aggregate were made for different replacement ratio of ground granulated blast furnace slag(GGBFS), and then compressive strength and resistance to freezing and thawing were evaluated for those. It was observed from the test results that compressive strength at 28 days of recycled aggregate concrete containing GGBFS of 20% was much more excellent than plain concrete and when air content of concrete was maintained 4 to 6%, influence of substitution ratio of recycled aggregate and replacement ratio of GGBFS on resistance to freezing and thawing was little up to 300 cycles of freezing and thawing.
