Curriculum Development for Nuclear Power and Radiation Education in Elementary, Middle, and High Schools (원자력 및 방사선에 대한 초, 중, 고등학교 교육과정 개발)

  • I developed a curriculum reflecting the perspectives of students, science teachers, and professionals in order to carry out standardized, fundamental nuclear power and radiation education in schools. Among elementary, middle, and high schools, 78.4%, 78.6%, and 93.1% respectively exhibited (with high frequency) a need for nuclear power and radiation education. The proposed elementary and middle/high school course titles are "Radiation and Life" and "Nuclear Power and Radiation" respectively. The courses are offered at every grade level and span one semester each year. The duration of each weekly class varies; at the elementary, middle, and high school levels classes meet for 40, 45, and 50 minutes respectively. Thin textbooks containing an abundance of cartoons and photos were requested. The starting points for education were fixed at the sixth grade, second year of middle school, and the first year of high school. It was stipulated that the education be separate from the regular curriculum, and encompass a creative and experimental field study based on the principal and science teachers' needs. Similar trends were observable according to grade levels regarding class hours, textbook format, form of education, and educational necessity. A simulation of the devised curriculum revealed an overall goodness of fit totaling $3.88{\pm}0.60$, $3.89{\pm}0.60$, and $3.66{\pm}0.63$ out of five for elementary, middle school, and high school students respectively, which are scores equivalent to 70 and above (out of 100). The significance of this study is that it is the first to propose a curriculum designed to cultivate value judgment based on understanding nuclear power and radiation. However, the realization of nuclear power and radiation education requires that follow-up measures be taken regarding textbook development, amendments to related laws, and the providing of teaching plans.

Scientists' Perceptions of Imagination and Characteristics of the Scientific Imagination (과학자들의 상상력에 대한 인식과 과학적 상상력의 특성 탐색)

  • In this study, we investigated scientists' perception of imagination and explored characteristics of scientific imagination. For this, we found out conceptions and characteristics based on literatures which related to imagination. We recruited eight distinguished Korean scientists who have rich research experiences by using Snowball sampling for in-depth interviews (60-90 minutes). All interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed. From the analysis of interview data, we identified their perceptions of imagination and the nature of scientific imagination which scientists reflect on during their research work. Semi-structured interview protocol was focused on: 1) how scientists perceive 'imagination' and 2) how scientists perceive the role of imagination in their scientific research. As results, we found out that scientists agreed that imagination plays an important role in scientific research process and they perceived imagination as an intrinsic part of human life. The study also indicated that participants have modern viewpoint about imagination. Moreover, we uncovered three characteristics of imagination in the research process. 1) Curiosity and interest have been a driving force for scientists' imagination. 2) When scientists use the imagination, they can be more creative during their research. 3) Imagination contemplated realistic possibilities based on the scientific knowledge, and produced the new ones. Educational implications for utilization of scientific imagination were also suggested.

A Study of e-Textbook Format Standardization Scheme for Smart Education Circumstance (스마트 교육환경을 위한 e-교과서 포맷 표준화 방안 연구)

  • The Korea government has recently announced "A Master Plan for Smart Education", including application of digital textbooks and composition of education system using cloud computing. Our education system in future circumstance, over the conventional e-learning methods, needs the smart education solutions which enable students to study and communicate on various types of devices. The ongoing government project related with the digital textbook has been performed as mid- and long-term goals, whereas PDF-based e-textbook project, similar to e-book model and, has been already completed for the short-term goal. For the purpose of improved future smart education circumstance, however, a specific strategy is required in the following areas: flexibility of format conversion and independency of original text sources among the multiple device platforms. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a standardization scheme for e-textbook format based on e-book structure. To do this, we survey trends in e-book technologies, and research on standardization of e-book format for digitalization of textbooks, based on the analysis of existing textbooks. Moreover, we produce an example e-book content using our proposed standard method. As a result, our approach can be applied to the future smart education circumstance, and we may say that it will be efficiently applicable to the long-term digital textbook project.

The Influence of Small Group Discussion on the Science Writing Ability of Elementary School Students (토론 활동이 초등학생의 과학글쓰기 능력에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of small group discussion on elementary students' science writing. In this study, four 6th grade students were chosen from an elementary school in Seoul. Students were involved in eight science writing classes and the contents of a small group discussion and interactions were recorded and observed. Students' science works were collected and analysed based on three domains: scientific thinking, logic and originality. The result of this study showed that the contents of a small group discussion greatly affected the scientific thinking domain. A low-achieving student received lots of help from a high-achieving student. It was easy to improve in the logic domain through the science writing classes. Average students got good grades in an originality domain when the subject was related to their real life. A small group discussion would have an effect on science writing ability positively if the students acquired proper guidance on the procedure and manner of discussion. The science writing lesson would be more effective if the learning group was organized homogeneously in the aspects of intelligence achievement and interpersonal relationships.

Development of Question Cards for Fossil Exhibition and Comparison of Communication Depending on Whether to Use the Cards in a Fossil Gallery (화석 전시물에 대한 질문카드 개발 및 활용 여부에 따른 관람 중 소통의 특징 비교)

  • This study aimed at developing a set of question cards for fostering deep understanding and encouraging reasoning about fossils and analyze the characteristics of visitors' communication depending on whether to use the question cards in a fossil gallery. Through several steps, a card set consisted of nine generic questions about fossil exhibitions and guidance for using question cards were developed. Data related to visitors' communications were collected from 18 peer groups (from 5th to 9th grade) visiting the fossil gallery of Gwacheon National Science Museum. Visiting groups' interactions were videotape recorded and transcribed. 'Holding time,' the types of 'actions,' and the types of 'conversation' were analysed. Visitors' actions were divided into three categories: ‘look’, 'speech', and 'motion.' Furthermore, visitors' conversations categorized as 'speech' were subdivided into four patterns: 'enumerative,' 'consensual,' 'responsive,' and 'argumentative.' Using the question cards contributes to increase holding time and most of the visiting actions. Most of the conversation patterns also increased except the responsive pattern. In conclusion, using question cards in a fossil gallery could facilitate concentrated and meaningful visits by enhancing active verbal and non-verbal communications between exhibit and visitor or among visitors, encouraging visitors' reasoning about exhibits, and guiding visitors what and how to focus on exhibits.

A Case Study of User-Centered Design Process for Developing Mobile Contents - Focused on Occupation Simulation Game Contents for Children on the Wireless Internet (사용자 중심 디자인 프로세스를 적용한 모바일 컨텐츠 개발 사례 - 어린이를 위한 무선인터넷 기반의 직업 시뮬레이션 게임 컨텐츠 개발을 중심으로)

  • As the mobile market has been expanded and segmented, a mobile market for kids could be possibly appeared sooner or later. Then, it is necessary to develop a new contents for the new media - a mobile game hardware for kids. These days, kids are most interested in computer games, and they do not have enough time to play with peers. Therefore, in this paper, edutainment game contents based on the wireless internet, are developed. The game could supply kids' learning, fun and especially, peer interaction. In order to develop a game contents through user centered design process, the state of art in mobile hardware and contents was examined, a secondary research and interviews and survey was conducted to understand users. Then, when ideas for game contents has suggested, behavior prototype test was done to verify and modify contents. The suggested game contents in this study, is a occupation simulation game, in which kids simulate their own future career and learn related knowledge in a unintentional way. The result of the study suggests the new direction of edutainment game contents and platform. Also, this study shows the representation of user-centered contents developing process for kids, which could be helpful for the following studies.

An Interpretable Log Anomaly System Using Bayesian Probability and Closed Sequence Pattern Mining (베이지안 확률 및 폐쇄 순차패턴 마이닝 방식을 이용한 설명가능한 로그 이상탐지 시스템)

  • With the development of the Internet and personal computers, various and complex attacks begin to emerge. As the attacks become more complex, signature-based detection become difficult. It leads to the research on behavior-based log anomaly detection. Recent work utilizes deep learning to learn the order and it shows good performance. Despite its good performance, it does not provide any explanation for prediction. The lack of explanation can occur difficulty of finding contamination of data or the vulnerability of the model itself. As a result, the users lose their reliability of the model. To address this problem, this work proposes an explainable log anomaly detection system. In this study, log parsing is the first to proceed. Afterward, sequential rules are extracted by Bayesian posterior probability. As a result, the "If condition then results, post-probability" type rule set is extracted. If the sample is matched to the ruleset, it is normal, otherwise, it is an anomaly. We utilize HDFS datasets for the experiment, resulting in F1score 92.7% in test dataset.

Critical Review on Research on Educational Gerontology in the Journal of the Korean Gerontological Society (『한국노년학』의 교육 분야 연구동향)

  • The purpose of this study was to critically review articles published in the Journal of the Korean Gerontological Society(2008-2017). The 70 articles on the field of educational gerontology were collected from the journal. Research subjects, types of research, data collection methods, data analysis methods, and topics of research were analyzed. For recent ten years, the proportion of articles about educational gerontology took only 10.7%. Normal older adults(52.9%) for research subjects, experimental research(41.4%) for types of research, using questionnaires(42.9%) for data collection methods, analyzing differences between experimental and control group(22.9%) for data analysis methods, and education for older adults(72.9%) for topics of research were showed the highest proportion. Future research on educational gerontology needs to investigate informal educational experiences, consider diversity of older adults, and have more critical opinions on educational gerontology.

  • Research in detecting fake information gained a lot of interest after the US presidential election in 2016. Information from unknown sources are produced in the shape of news, and its rapid spread is fueled by the interest of public drawn to stimulating and interesting issues. In addition, the wide use of mass communication platforms such as social network services makes this phenomenon worse. Poynter Institute created the International Fact Checking Network (IFCN) to provide guidelines for judging the facts of skilled professionals and releasing "Code of Ethics" for fact check agencies. However, this type of approach is costly because of the large number of experts required to test authenticity of each article. Therefore, research in automated fake news detection technology that can efficiently identify it is gaining more attention. In this paper, we investigate fake news detection systems and researches that are rapidly developing, mainly thanks to recent advances in deep learning technology. In addition, we also organize shared tasks and training corpus that are released in various forms, so that researchers can easily participate in this field, which deserves a lot of research effort.

The Effects of School Forest Activities Program on Science Process Skill and the Attitude toward Science of Elementary Student (학교 숲 체험 활동 프로그램이 초등학생의 과학탐구능력과 과학에 대한 태도에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of school forest activities program on elementary students' science process skill and attitude toward science to make suggestions to help develop and extend the program. The subjects of the study were 49 students of two classes. One class of 24 students, experimental class, took developed 10 periods of school forest activities program. While the other class of 25 students, comparative class, took ordinary teacher driven periods using photo materials and study papers. Before and after the program, pre and post test were done. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: First, the school forest activities program didn't have a meaningful effect on students' science process skill. Second, the school forest activities program had a meaningful effect on the improvement of students' attitude toward science. From the interview with experimental class, we could know that students had a favorable impression and high satisfaction level about the activities program.
