  • A method for shape design sensitivity analysis for axisymmetric shells of general shapes is developed. The basic approach is to divide the structures into many segments : For each of the segments, the formula for a shallow arch or shell can be applied and the results assembled. To interconnect those segments, the existing sensitivity formula, obtained for a variation only in the direction perpendicular to the plane on which the structure is mapped, has been extended to include a variation normal to the middle surface. The method follows the adjoint variable approach based on the material derivative concept as established in the literature. Numerical examples are taken to illustrate the method and the applicability to practical design problems.

  • A direct differentiationmethod is presented for the shape design sensitivity analysis of axisymmeetric elastic solids. Based on the exisymmetric boundary integralequaiton formulation, a new boundary ntegral equatio for sensitivity analysis is derived by taking meterial derivative to the same integral identity that was used in the adjoint variable melthod. Numerical implementation is performed to show the applicaiton of the theoretical formulation. For a simple example with analytic solution, the sensitivities by present method are compared with analytic sensitivities. As an application to the shape optimization, an optimal shape of a gas turbine disc toinimize the weight under stress constraints is found by incorporating the sensitivity analysis algorithm in an optimizatio program.

  • This paper presents a continuum-based shape design sensitivity analysis(DSA) method for crack propagation problems using a reproducing kernel method(RKM), which facilitates the remeshing problem required for finite element analysis(FEA) and provides the higher order shape functions by increasing the continuity of the kernel functions. A linear elasticity is considered to obtain the required stress field around the crack tip for the evaluation of J-integral. The sensitivity of displacement field and stress intensity factor(SIF) with respect to shape design variables are derived using a material derivative approach. For efficient computation of design sensitivity, an adjoint variable method is employed tather than the direct differentiation method. Through numerical examples, The mesh-free and the DSA methods show excellent agreement with finite difference results. The DSA results are further extended to a shape optimization of crack propagation problems to control the propagation path.

  • A method of the shape design sensitivity analysis based on the boundary integral equation formulation is presented for two-dimensional inhomogeneous thermal conducting solids with multiple domains. Shape variation of the external and interface boundary is considered. A sensitivity formula of a general performance functional is derived by taking the material derivative to the boundary integral identity and by introducing an adjoint system. In numerical analysis, state variables of the primal and adjoint systems are solved by the boundary element method using quadratic elements. Two numerical examples of a compound cylinder and a thermal diffuser are taken to show implementation of the shape design sensitivity analysis. Accuracy of the present method is verified by comparing analyzed sensitivities with those by the finite difference. As application to the shape optimization, an optimal shape of the thermal diffuser is found by incorporating the sensitivity analysis algorithm in an optimization program.

  • A method for shape design sensitivity analysis is proposed utilizing commercial software ANSYS for thermal conduction problems. While the sensitivity formula is derived analytically by introduing adjoint variable concept, sensitivity calculation in practice as well as the primal and adjoint solution of thermal conduction is performed using the ANSYS very easily. Since the formula always takes boundary integral form, sensitivity evaluation in ANSYS requires a little more addition of post-processing routine which involves evaluation of boundary variable from the obtained solution. Though the BEM has been used as a better tool for this purpose, the present study shows it can also be calculated using any kind of analysis code such as ANSYS since the formula is based on analytic nature. Therefore the present study provides a new and efficient way of optimization which was not possible before using commercial software. The usefulness of the method is illustrated via a weight minimization problem of thermal diffuser.

  • A boundary-based design sensitivity analysis(DSA) technique is proposed for addressing shape optimization issues in the elastostatics problems. Sensitivity formula is derived based on the continuum formulation in a boundary integral form, which consists of the boundary solutions and shape variation vectors. Though the boundary element method(BEM) has been mainly used to obtain the boundary solution, the FEM is used in this paper because this is much more popular, and has greatly improved meshing and computing power recently. The advantage of the boundary DSA is that the shape variation vectors, which are also known as design velocity fields, are needed only on the boundary. Then, the step for determining the design velocity field over the whole domain, which was necessary in the domain-based DSA, is eliminated, making the process easy to implement and efficient. Problem of fillet design is chosen to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed method. Accuracy of the sensitivity is good with this method even by employing the free mesh for the FE analysis.

  • A shape design sensitivity of the elastic deformation due to a change of traction boundary condition is presented. The solution of governing equations for a linear elasticity problem is obtained by finite element method and the traction boundary is defined by design variables. The performance functional to be considered involves both the domain and boundary integral. Variations of geometry can be defined as design velocity. Using material derivative concept and adjoint equations, the design sensitivity is derived by Lagrange multiplier method. For a given geometry of a structure, the change of traction boundary is described by the tangential component of the design velocity only. The final result for the shape design sensitivity is formulated as the boundary integral form, the integrand is defined by tangential component of design velocity and first order derivatives of parameters. Numerical implementation of design sensitivity is discussed and is compared with the difference of the actual values.

  • One of the major disadvantages of isogeometric analysis(IGA) is that local refinement is nearly impossible in a conventional manner because of the tensor product nature in NURBS. In this research, we investigate a local refinement scheme for isogeometric analysis, named multi-resolution approach where different resolutions are employed at each subdomain, using h-refinement relation to endow displacement compatibility on an interface of subdomains. Then, we develop shape sensitivity analysis possessing same compatibility condition as in the analysis. Numerical examples are shown to demonstrate the computational efficiency of the method in analysis especially stress concentration problem and accurate sensitivity results which is also compatible on the interface.

  • This study presents a technique to control quantitatively lateral drift of RC tall frameworks subject to lateral loads. To this end, lateral drift constraints are established by introducing approximation concept that preserves the generality of the mathematical programming and can efficiently solve large scale problems. Also the relationships of sectional properties are established to reduce the number of design variables and resizing technique of member is developed under the 'constant-shape' assumption. Specifically, the methodology of dynamic displacement sensitivity analysis is developed to formulate the approximated lateral displacement constraints. Three types of 10 and 50 story RC framework models are considered to illustrate the features of dynamic stiffness-based optimal design technique proposed in this study.
