  • Purpose: This study was performed in order to figure out the influence of illumination on visual function. Methods: 40 adults (male 21, female 19) of average age $23.93{\pm}1.59$ years were participated in this study. The test chart surface illumination was adjusted to 5, 50, 200, 500 and 800 lx, and then amplitude of accommodation, near point of convergence, far and near distance phoria, far and near distance fusional vergence, relative accommodation, and accommodation lag were measured at each illumination condition. Results: As illumination intensity of test chart was reduced, amplitude of accommodation was significantly decreased (p<0.05), accommodation lag was also decreased, near point of convergence was receded, and horizontal phoria showed a tendency of esodeviation. In the case of negative fusional vergence, with reduction of illumination intensity, the break point and the recovery point were decreased but in the case of positive fusional vergence, the break point was increased. The negative and positive relative accommodation were significantly decreased (p<0.05) with reduction of illumination intensity. Conclusions: In clinical practice, visual functional test should be performed under condition of adequate illumination level through patient's living environment and job.

  • Screen printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs) with immobilized osmium-based hydrogel redox polymer, uricase and PEGDGE can be used to apply uric acid electrochemical detecting. The osmium redox complexes were synthesized by the coordinating pyridine group having different functional group at 4-position with osmium compounds. The synthesized poly-osmium hydrogel complexes are described as PAA-PVI-$[Os(dCl-bpy)_2Cl]^{+/2+}$, PAA-PVI-$[Os(dme-bpy)_2Cl]^{+/2+}$, PAA-PVI-$[Os(dmo-bpy)_2Cl]^{+/2+}$. The different concentrations of uric acid were measured by cyclic voltammetry technique using enzyme-immobilized SPCEs. The prepared SPCEs using PAA-PVI-$[Os(dme-bpy)_2Cl]^{+/2+}$ showed no interference from common physiologic interferents such as ascorbic acid (AA) or glucose. The resulting electrical currents at 0.33 V vs. Ag/AgCl displayed a good linear response with uric acid concentrations from 1.0 to 5.0 mM. Therefore, this approach allowed the development of a simple, point of care in the medical field, disposable electrochemical uric acid biosensor.

  • The steam generator tubes of nuclear power plants have various types of corrosion failures during the plant operation. The stress corrosion cracking which occurs on the outer surface of tube is called the secondary side stress corrosion cracking and mainly occurs in the expansion-transition area of tube. The causes are the concentration of impurities by the sludge pile-up related to the geometry of its region and the residual stress by tube expansion in the process of steam generator manufacturing. Especially the directionality and sizes of residual stresses are differed according to the tube expansion methods and the direction and the frequency of tube cracks depend on their characteristics. In bases on the plant experiences, it is notified that circumferential cracks of tubes expanded with explosive expansion method are dominantly occurred compared to those of tubes done with hydraulic expansion one. Therefore in this study, according to tube expansion methods frequencies and sizes of tube cracks with specific direction are compared by means of accelerated immersion test and also the crack morphology and the specific chemicals from water-chemistry environment are observed through the fracture surface examination.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the elementary mathematics education program for the cultivation of humanistic imagination and characters through the link between mathematics and literature to find out its effectiveness. This study has verified the effectiveness of mathematics academic achievement, humanistic imagination and characters with the program development and preliminary program and application of this program for two years. After conducting classes on proportional expression and proportional distribution for 79 sixth-grade elementary school students (39 in the experimental class and 40 in the comparative class) in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do under this program, the researcher analyzed how the application of the program affects students' perception using pre- and post-examinations on mathematics academic achievement, humanistic imagination, and characters, including interviews with students, and analysis of outputs of the students. Studies have shown that the application of the elementary mathematics education program to foster humanities imagination and characters did not make any significant difference in mathematics academic achievement, and there were statistically significant differences in the subcategories of "reflection on life", "positive self-consciousness" and "humanistic imagination" categories, and there were no statistically significant differences in the "purpose of life" and "human relations" categories. However, the responses from the students' interviews showed that their perspectives of humans and the world has become wider and deeper. It also did not produce significant results for characters. As suggestions, the ministry should present the need to develop and distribute concerning materials for teachers, secure time for creative experience activities for convergence subjects, and operate practical and long-term training programs for teachers.

  • Recieved Mar. 06, 2013 Revised Mar. 29, 2013 Accepted Sep. 11, 2013In this study, we evaluated the method performance and the optimum sample injection method of the portable GC/MS(HAPSITE) which were designed to operate on scene of chemical accidents. Chemicals used for performance test were vinyl chloride(VC), methyl chloride(MC), benzene(Bz), toluene(Tol). CRM(Certified Reference Material) Manufactured by KRISS(Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science) was used as the standard gas. The results showed that 1) Among three sample injection methods(Cylinder, Silico canister, and Bag), bag was identified as the most appropriate sample injection method. Bag material and capacity did not significantly affect the results. The most ideal reproducibility occurred at the 2-minute point of the purge time in the loop and tenax methods. 2) Performance evaluation of HAPSITE was conducted. Evaluation items were reproducibility, linearity, method detection limit, etc. Tenax concentration method was appropriate for larger molecules and Carbopack concentration method was suitable for smaller molecules.

  • Photography is the most commonly used method of documenting the crime and incident scene as it helps maintaining chain of custody (COC) and prove integrity of the physical evidence. It can also capture phenomena as they are. However, digital images can be manipulated and lose their authenticity as admissible evidence. Thus only limited techniques can be used to enhance images, and one of them is Fourier transform. Fourier transform refers to transformation of images into frequency signals. Fast Fourier transform (FFT) is used in this study. In this experiment, we overlapped fingerprints with graph paper or other fingerprints and separated the fingerprints. Then we evaluated and compared quality of the separated fingerprints to the original fingerprints, and examined whether the two fingerprints can be identified as same fingerprints. In the case of the fingerprints on graph paper and general pattern-overlapping fingerprints, fingerprint ridges are enhanced. On the other hand, in case of separating complicated fingerprints such as core-to-core overlapping and delta-to-delta overlapping fingerprints, quality of fingerprints can be deteriorated. Quality of fingerprints is known to possibly bring negative effects on the credibility of examiners. The result of this study may be applicable to other areas using digital imaging enhancement technology.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide a method to help elementary school students learn ratio-related concepts effectively through visual representations. This study was conducted to identify the differences in the composition of ratio-related concepts between Korean and Singaporean textbooks, reconstruct a unit of proportional expressions and distributions by using visual representations and confirm the differences in performance between an experimental and a comparison group of 6th grade students. While the experimental group mathematics lessons is from the reconstructed textbook, the comparison group lessons is from an existing textbook that does not include any reconstructive representations. A t-test of mean was applied to determine the differences between the experimental and comparison group. Analysis revealed significant differences in the mean between the experimental group and the comparison group, and the intermediate level group showed more improvement compared to the higher and lower level groups. An implication of this study is that the application of visual representations can assist students' understanding of ratio-related concepts.
