  • Waste tires can be used not only for reinforcement material due to its high capacity against tensile force but also effective for massive treatment. In order to use waste tire as reinforcing material Tread mat using tire treads only was made. Plate load tests on the embankment of decomposed granite soil reinforced with Tread mat and geogrids were conducted for comparison with the test results, respectively. And numerical analyses were performed to see the stress and stain around the reinforced material. Tread mat showed bearing capacity increase and the amount was bigger than that of commercial geogrids. Finite element analysis showed decrease of stress beneath the reinforced material and stress distribution. Finally Tread mat was proposed to use for soil reinforcement as a means of massive treatment of discarded tire.

  • In early days, to analyze the behavior of single pile under axial load, many assumptions were made and field tests were performed. But in recent days, the development of computers led the use of the numerical analysis resulting in more realistic and correct results. The numerical methods are classified into Load Transfer Method and Elastic Solid Approach. In this study a numerical program applying t-z model to Load Transfer Method suggested by Coyle & Reese was developed. And another finite difference program using matrix based on this load transfer was developed. As a result, it is found that the values of the F.D.M. were similar to the values measured in-situ.

  • Cellular Foundation Mattress made of new materials such as high density polyethylene, are not currently use for the foundation of small and medium-sized buildings in Korea. Therefore, they need to be developed and verified based on domestic ground and field conditions. This study presents the basic design and construction method of Cellular Foundation Mattress. Since the foundation reinforcement effect of Cellular Foundation Mattress should be evaluated and verified for soft ground, a performance comparison evaluation was conducted using the Soilbag method, which is commonly used for the foundation of small and medium-sized buildings in Korea. After the mattress reinforcement, the settlement amount decreased by 38.4% compared to the original ground and the bearing capacity increased by 159%, confirming the same ground reinforcement effect and ground stability as the Soilbag method.

  • This study sets it's face to define effects of the various loading periods in normal consolidation area on clay's compression and long-term consolidation characteristics through a laboratory test using homogeneous remolded clay. Moreover, by carrying out a long-term consolidation test which diversifies initial consolidation applicable to effective overburden loading in the various loading period. This study intended to suggest the method predicting the final settlement on the basis of loading periods by comparing and analyzing compression curve's characteristics according to loading weight of each stage and increase in loading period when carrying out the standard consolidation test. From the test results, the study shows that as of the soft clay's compression characteristics on the basis of various loading periods, preconsolidation load has a tendency to be decreased slightly as the loading period is getting more and more longer at each step after initial consolidation load puts on the remolded clay which is caused by secondary consolidation's increase in the latter part of each phase. And those effects have an weaker influence on compression index in normal consolidation area at the same time as secondary consolidation brought out quasi-overconsolidation and stabilization of clay's structure, have an influence re-compression index is increased in overconsolidation area on the other hand.

  • Mudstone, found Du-Ho Dong and around there in Po-Hang, is used as construction material. When it is exposed to the air and contacts with water, the strength is decreased rapidly and then it causes a lot of problems. In the field, clay soils with $K_o$ condition have anisotropic characteristics which behave differently according to the change of principal stress direction. In this study, $K_o$ consolidation is performed to make the completely weathered mudstone under the same conditions of construction place. Then, the triaxial compression test is performed at different shear velocity and anisotropy by sampling degree and the stress - strain behavior is shown the strain softening behavior. The stress - strain relationship from triaxial compression test is compared with the prediction value of Cam-clay model. From the results of tests, $K_o$ value decreases with the increase of sampling degree. Generally the behavior of $K_o$ consolidated specimen shows work-softening characteristic. The trend of behaviour of the measured is nearly to same to the predicted by Cam-clay model. But the measured value of deviator stress is very higher than the predicted. Therefore, Cam-clay model was not appropriate to the completely weathered mudstone consolidated with $K_o$ condition in Pohang region.

  • In this study, an artificially formed Gap graded soil, designed to increase its shear strength, was analyzed to determine the strength parameters through direct shear tests. Uniform and fine grain size samples were compared to the Gap graded soil to investigate the increase in the shear strength. Plate loading tests were conducted using 13mm and 19mm aggregates to confirm the reproducibility of the strength enhanced samples for site application. This test confirmed that the particle size ratio and the internal friction angle are correlated to the shear strength, and the shear resistance angle significantly increased in the specific particle size ratio range. The calculation of the ultimate bearing capacity by the plate load test demonstrated that the grain size adjustment method greatly influences the strength increase rate. Therefore, the findings were verified and it was confirmed that a high shear strength is achievable despite the existence of a poor particle size distribution.

  • In this research, problems of recent design methods and their improvement for SIP(Soil-Cement Injected precast Pile) in domestic areas were studied by using the properties of load-settlement curves and bearing capacity from field loading tests. Elastic and plastic settlement for total settlement in each loading step of loading tests conducted in domestic areas has been shown to have a tendency. From this tendency and bearing capacity determined by loading tests, it could be ascertained that empirical chart could be an assistant tool in SIP design. It was shown that SIP design using N-value in domestic area with soil condition of granitic type resulted in very conservative hearing capacity. On the other hands, in soil with unfitted geological conditions, the design could be insecure. Also, we could ascertain that Meyerhof's bearing capacity using modified N-value on the tip part of pile was more applicable than recent design method where tip bearing capacity was 20NA$_p$ N-value limited to 50. These results showed that modified design method could be more economic than those in the past because it used pile's bearing capacity unto tolerable load of pile material.

  • In this study, the statistical characteristics of the resistance bias factors were analyzed using a high-quality field load test database, and the total resistance bias factors were estimated considering the soil uncertainty and construction errors for the application of the limit state design of aggregate pier foundation. The MLR model by Bong and Kim (2017), which has a higher prediction performance than the previous models was used for estimating the resistance bias factors, and its suitability was evaluated. The chi-square goodness of fit test was performed to estimate the probability distribution of the resistance bias factors, and the normal distribution was found to be most suitable. The total variability in the nominal resistance was estimated including the uncertainty of undrained shear strength and construction errors that can occur during the aggregate pier construction. Finally, the probability distribution of the total resistance bias factors is shown to follow a log-normal distribution. The parameters of the probability distribution according to the coefficient of variation of total resistance bias factors were estimated by Monte Carlo simulation, and their regression equations were proposed for simple application.

  • Song-Do international city is the area developed in large-scale land reclamation. Song-Do area consists of reclamation layer, sedimentary layer(loose silt, soft clay and sand alternating) and residual layer from the ground surface. Therefore, using pile foundation is inevitable to build structures safely. In this area, driven PHC piles have been generally constructed in terms of environmental and economic conditions. As a result of analyzing 4 sites in Song-Do district 5 and 7 recently, the method of driving pile has many problems because of existence of rigid soil in sedimentary layer and installation of more than 30m piles. In this case, when installing piles by drive after pre-boring up to appropriate depth, the results of constructability analysis were very good. And in the economic efficiency, although 4% of construction cost rose, it was a very slight increase in comparison with improvement of workability. In the case of the stability, more than 70% compared to the allowable stress of piles was satisfied through the load test. As a result, when PHC piles is installed in Song-Do district, the proper construction method is that piles are located at bearing layer after boring rigid sand layer.

  • In this study, experimental analysis was performed about lateral load capacity and behavior of laterally loaded-bored piles for soil conditions and pile shape, i.e. cylindrical and taper piles. Also, Calibration chamber load tests were performed for cylindrical and taper piles considering the variations of relative densities and restraint stresses. According to the results of chamber tests, it was found that, while both vertical and horizontal stresses affect load-responses and ultimate lateral load capacity of laterally loaded piles, effect of the horizontal stress was larger than that of the vertical stress. Effect of lateral load capacity and behavior was relatively small compared to relative density and stress state of soils surrounding piles, but showed a little difference for soil conditions. From comparison between predicted and measured lateral load capacity, it was observed that predicted results differ significantly from measured results. This is mainly due to the fact that the effect of horizontal stress is not considered in the conventional prediction methods.
