  • The policy of promoting innovation clusters aims to enhance the competitiveness of industries by strengthening the linkages between industry sectors and research sectors in specific regions. In Korea, after the concept of innovation clusters was introduced by the OECD in 1997, Korean government actively pursued policies based on this concept in the fields of industry, region, and science and technology. Previous policies and research on the activation of innovation clusters have tended to focus on the exchange and collaboration among members. However, this study focused on enhancing the competitiveness of industries and regions, in other words, strengthening the competitiveness of companies, which is the fundamental reason for fostering innovative clusters. Accordingly, this study aimed to analyze the impact of factors activating innovation clusters on the business performance of SMEs located in the Daedeok Innopolis. To achieve this, based on the essential concept of innovation clusters such as industrial agglomeration factors, networking factors, innovation generation factors, the study derived factors for activating innovation clusters and verified hypotheses using the survey results of 175 companies. Among the factors activating innovation clusters, industrial agglomeration and innovation generation were found to have a positive impact on the business performance of companies. However, networking factors were analyzed to have no significant influence on the business performance of companies. This study differentiates itself by addressing the factors for activating innovation clusters through empirical analysis, unlike previous case-based studies. Furthermore, considering the difference between intuitive judgments on networking factors in innovation clusters and their actual impact on business performance, the study raised the practical significance of conducting a comprehensive examination from various perspectives, such as the socially and culturally embedded structures in the region, the characteristics of specialized industries, and the needs of cluster members, to develop more effective policies for innovation clusters.

  • In this paper, we analyzed whether there exists positive relation between firm's global activity and various innovation output and, if it exists, what are the major factors by which innovation outputs can be generated, focusing on the different degree of global activity. We found that for foreign MNC affiliates, their superior information access to existing knowledge is much more important and for non-MNC exporters and domestic MNC parents not only access to existing knowledge but also active investment in new knowledge is important. When we analyze the product and the process innovation separately, we found that for the process innovation information flows from existing knowledge is relatively more important while for product innovation investment in new knowledge and information flows from existing knowledge are almost equally important. Thus in Korea policies that promote both direct R&D activities and information flows should be pursued at the same time to enhance firms' innovativeness.

  • This study empirically verified the effect of environmental dynamism on changes in the dynamic and operational capabilities of an enterprise and its innovation performance. With the aim of quantification, the concept and definition of each capability were defined as a hierarchical structure of dynamic and operational capabilities. Five research hypotheses were established through prior research on dynamic capabilities, operational capabilities, innovation performance, and environmental dynamism. For empirical analysis, the hypotheses were verified based on surveys from 300 Korean manufacturing companies. It was shown that Dynamic capabilities had a positive relationship with operational capabilities and operational capabilities had a positive relationship with innovation performance. And it was shown that operational capabilities had a positive relationship with radical innovation in business groups with high environmental dynamism while operating capabilities had a positive relationship with gradual innovation in business groups with low environmental dynamism. Also, the moderating effect of environmental dynamism was not significant in the relationship with dynamic capabilities on operational capabilities. This study is meaningful in that it lays the groundwork for empirically verifying the dynamic capabilities of an enterprise by embodying its dynamic capabilities and operational capabilities into processes, and verifies the effect of environmental change on its capabilities and innovation performance. And it has implications to suggest how an enterprise should transform its capabilities to sustain its competitive advantage in a rapidly changing environment.

  • Using small and medium sized firms located on 3th seongseo industry complex in Daegu, this study investigated the effects of technology development factors on innovation performance, and suggested the implications in terms of technology policies. Technology development factors are categorized into both fundamental based factors and external cooperation based factors as independent variables. According to the research results, external cooperation based factor positively affects innovation performance, and this positive effect is reported in firms having more than average firm size. Under environment uncertainty, external cooperation based factor plays a key role to increase innovation performance to firms having more than average firm size. Therefore, policy making should be focused on external cooperation, not on fundamental base such as people and infrastructure, and also dissimilar policy suggestion based firm size is needed to be considered.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the types for open innovation of SMEs considering strategic- culture mixed typology and environmental dynamism. The analysis results of 182 SMEs classified into 4 groups are as follows. First, type PD had a positive effect on innovation performance in both in-bound and out-bound innovation and had improved performance through in-bound innovation in a dynamic technical environment. While DH had no significant effect on both innovations. Second, PH and DD, strategy-culture mismatched types, had a single effect of innovation that affected performance. No moderating effects of environmental dynamism had been shown in types PH, DD, DH. SMEs that aim for open innovation should strive to improve performance by aligning change-oriented strategy with creative and challenging culture.
