Improved Antibacterial Effect of Blending Essential Oils (블렌딩 에센션오일의 항균효과 증진)

  • Essential oil from herb is known to exert pharmacological effects on the human body. In this study we investigated the antibacterial activity of 4 essential oils (teetree, rosemary, melisa, and lavender), as well as the blended mixture oil of teetree, rosemary, and melisa (TRM) on three bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Antibacterial analysis was performed using the standard disk diffusion method, and minimum inhibition concentration was determined by the broth microdilution method with different concentrations of essential oils (0.5, 1, 2 and 3 mg/mL). After incubation at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 h, the antibacterial activity was assessed by measuring the zone of growth inhibition surrounding the disks. Herb oil with the inhibition zones showed varied values ranging from6 to 25 mm. However, the components of herb oil of TRM are as highly active as the teetree oil against pathogens, generating large inhibition zones for both gram negative and positive bacteria (13~22 mm and 8 mm inhibition zones). In the analysis for MIC, TRM showed growth-inhibitory effects at 0.0625% for S. aureus and E. coli, and 1.25% for P. aeruginosa. This result demonstrated that the anti-microbial activity of TRM was greater than a single herb oil, including oxacillin, rosemary, and teetrea. As a single herb oil, both rosemary and teetrea also had an anti-microbial effect by itself, and we can expect that the blended oil mixture may exert a synergistic effect against multidrug resistant bacteria, suggesting its future application in natural preservative agents for health food and cosmetics.

Food Classification by the Codex Alimentarius Commission: Cereal Grains, Nuts and Seeds, Herbs and Spices (코덱스의 식품 분류: 곡류, 견과종실류, 허브 및 향신료)

  • The process of establishing domestic standards on hazardous substances in food safety regulations requires harmonization with standards from the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC). For this purpose, food classification by the CAC (Codex Classification of Foods and Animal Feeds) also needs to be clearly understood. Therefore, this paper aimed to introduce the Codex Classification on cereal grains, nuts/seeds and herbs/spices because revisions of the Codex were completed in 2017 for cereal grains and in 2018 for nuts/seeds and herbs/spices. The revised Codex Classification on those foods is briefly summarized as follows. Cereal grains in the domestic food classification by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, Korea (MFDS) corresponds to the Codex Group 020 cereal grains with six subgroups. The MFDS's nuts and seeds classification corresponds to three groups in the Codex, namely, Group 022 (tree nuts with no subgroups), Group 023 (oilseeds and oilfruits with 5 subgroups), and Group 024 (seeds for beverages and sweets with no subgroups). The food commodities of herbs and spices are included in two Codex groups, Group 027 (with 3 subgroups) and Group 028 (with 9 subgroups). The number of Codex commodity codes assigned to food commodities was 27 for Group 020, 32 for Group 022, 46 for Group 023, 4 for Group 024, 127 for Group 027 and 138 for Group 028. In between the Codex Classification and the MFDS's classification, some differences are shown. For example, the MFDS did not create a subgroup under groups of cereal grains and herbs. The MFDS classified peanuts into the nut group, though a separate group for oilseeds is present, while the Codex classified peanuts into the oilseed and oilfruit group. In addition, there is also a separate group of "plants, others" present in the MFDS's classification. Therefore, care is needed in using the Codex Classification.

Analysis of Food Resources of 20 Endangered Fishes in Freshwater Ecosystems of South Korea using Non-metric Multidimensional Scaling and Network Analysis (비메트릭 다변량 척도법과 네트워크 분석을 통한 멸종위기 국내 담수어류 20종의 먹이원 분석)

  • By reviewing previous literature, we analyzed the food sources of 20 out of 29 endangered fish species from freshwater ecosystems in South Korea. A total of 19 studies reported that food sources of 20 endangered fish species included 20 phyla, 31 classes, 58 orders, 116 families, and 154 genera. Arthropod, insecta, diptera, and chironomidae were the most fed animal food sources according to different resolution of taxa index on phylum, class, order and family. Similarity, bacillariophyta, bacillariophyceae, naviculales, and cymbellaceae were the most fed abundant plant sources. A larger number of fish species were reliant on animal food sources than plant food sources. 18 of the endangered fish preyed on arthropods, whereas only 6 species consumed bacillariophyta. To characterize the feeding groups of the 20 fish species, a hierarchical clustering analysis and non-metric multidimensional scaling analysis were conducted. The fish species were divided into two groups: 1) insectivores and 2) planktivores. A network analysis, which associated the link between endangered fishes and food sources, also revealed the same two groups. The highest hub score of food sources was for macroinvertebrates, including diptera (0.47), ephemeroptera (0.42), and trichoptera (0.38), based on the network analysis. Niche breadth was used to calculate the diversity of the food sources. Phoxinus phoxinus (0.57) showed thehighest food source diversity among the fish species, whereas Iksookimia pacifica (0.01) showed the lowest. This study will be utilized for the conservation and restoration of the endangered fish species.

Analysis of Food Resources of 45 Fish Species in Freshwater Ecosystems of South Korea (Based on Literature Data Analysis) (국내 담수어류 45종의 먹이원 분석(문헌자료 분석을 중심으로))

  • We analyzed food sources of 45 fish species in 28 genera of 12 families based on literature data in freshwater ecosystems of South Korea. The food sources of 45 fish species included in a total of 26 phyla, 42 classes, 94 orders, 189 families and 294 genera. Among them, animal food sources were 16 phyla, 24 classes, 54 orders, 126 families and 212 genera, whereas plant food sources were relatively small with 10 phyla, 18 classes, 42 orders, 63 families and 82 genera. The animal food sources were classified into Arthropod, Insecta, Diptera and Chironomidae according to taxa. Meanwhile, Bacillariophyta, Bacillariophyceae, Cymbellales and Cymbellaceae were the most abundant among the plant sources. Self-Organized Map (SOM) and network analysis were conducted the food sources were classified into taxonomic groups and the feeding types of fish : 45 fish species were divided into five groups, characterizing 1) fishvores, 2) invertebratevores, planktivores including 3) zooplankton and 4) phytoplankton, and 5) omnivores. The network analysis presented link association between fishes and food sources. Macroinvertebrate including diptera and ephemeroptera were revealed as hub food sources based on network analysis. This literature study would expect that the application model with the food source of fish could be utilized for the evaluation of the food network or chain in freshwater ecosystems.

Pharmacological Analyses of HIMH0021 Extracted from Acer Tegmentosum and Efficacy Tests of Steatohepatitis and Hepatic Fibrosis in NASH/ASH (산겨릅나무로부터 추출된 HIMH0021의 알콜성·비알콜성 지방간염 질환에서의 약리학적 분석 및 지방간염 및 간섬유화 억제능 평가)

  • Alcoholic and nonalcoholic steaohepatitis is a leading form of chronic liver disease with few biomakers ad treatment options currently available. a progressive disease of NAFLD may lead to fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Recently, we extracted HIMH0021, which is an active flavonoid component in the Acer tegmentosum extract, has been shown to protect against liver damage caused by hepatic dysfunction. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to investigate whether HIMH0021 could regulate steatohepatitis and liver fibrosis during alcoholic or nonalcoholic metabolic process. HIMH0021, which was isolated from the active methanol extract of A. tegmentosum, inhibited alcohol-induced steatosis and attenuated the serum levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) during hepatocellular alcohol metabolism, both of which promote lipogenesis as well as liver inflammation. Treatment with HIMH0021 conferred protection against lipogenesis and liver injury, inhibited the expression of cytochrome P4502E1, and increased serum adiponectin levels in the mice subjected to chronic-plus-binge feeding. Furthermore, in hepatocytes, HIMH0021 activated fatty acid oxidation by activating pAMPK, which comprises pACC and CPT1a. These findings suggested that HIMH0021 could be used to target a TNFα-related pathway for treating patients with alcoholic hepatitis.

Effects of Tested Pack Containing Plant Extracts on Elasticity and Size of Women's Breasts (식물추출물 팩의 여성가슴 탄력증진과 크기증대에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, we purified the extracts from the seeds and the roots of various plant species, including Q. acutissima, C. lanceolata, P. mirifica, P. bambusoides, and S. repens, and then investigated the effects of these extracts on cell growth and fat accumulation in adipocytes. We found that the extracts purified from Q. acutissima, C. lanceolata, P. mirifica, P. bambusoides, and S. repens more effectively increased the cell growth, as well as promoting the fat accumulation in adipocytes to a greater extent, than other extracts in vitro. Therefore, we made breast packs containing these effective extracts, and then investigated whether they were effective in enhancing the elasticity and volume of women's breasts. The measurements of breast elasticity and size revealed that the breast packs efficiently increased the elasticity and size of women's breasts. Furthermore, evaluation of the questionnaires related to usage of the breast packs indicated great satisfaction in terms of the lift, firmness, and elasticity of breasts. In conclusion, extracts purified from Q. acutissima, C. lanceolata, P. mirifica, P. bambusoides, and S. repens leading to cell growth and fat accumulation in adipocytes can effectively contribute to improving the elasticity and size of women's breasts.

Repellency of Herb Plants and Essential Oils Against the Green Peach Aphid, Myzus persicae (허브류 식물과 정유의 복숭아혹진딧물에 대한 기피 효과)

  • Repellencies of herb plants and essential oils against alate Myzus persicae were investigated in a insect cage, a screen house, and a tobacco field. Numbers of nymphs deposited by alate or apterous Myzur persicae were lower on rosemary(Rosmarinus officinalis), silver thyme (Thymus vulgaris), and lemon balm(Melissa of fcianazis). Rosemary and silver thyme show little repellency against alate Myzus persicae on a nearby tobacco plant Rosemary oil, peppermint (Mentha piperita) oil, and ginger oil showed repellency against alate Myzus persicae, but spearmint (Mentha spicata) oil and lavender oil showed little repellency in a screen house. Rosemary oil, ginger oil, peppermint oil, lavender oil, and spearmint oil showed repellency against alate Myzus persicae in a tobacco field, but there was no significant difference among oils.

Comparison of Growth Characteristics of Chinese Cabbage Using Plant Extracts (식물추출물을 왈용한 엇갈이 배추(Brassica campestris var. Pekinensis)의 생육특성 비교)

  • 최근 안전한 먹거리 생산과 치유, 교육 등 다양한 목적으로 도시농업에 참여하는 인구가 늘어남에 따라 도시텃밭의 농약, 비료 사용 등으로 인한 환경오염과 해충 피해, 농산물의 건강성 등 다양한 문제가 제기되고 있다. 따라서 도시텃밭 작물의 생육 증진, 잔류농약 문제 해결 등 농산물 안정성 증가에 기여하고자 식물추출물을 활용한 엇갈이 배추의 생육특성을 조사하였다. 선행연구 결과를 바탕으로 자원식물류 5종(쇠비름, 소리쟁이, 명아주, 박주가리, 환삼덩굴)과 허브류 5종(메리골드, 서던우드, 캐모마일, 애플민트, 로즈마리), 식용작물류 5종(양파, 마늘, 부추, 차즈기, 들깨) 등 추출 대상 식물 15종을 60℃에서 3일간 건조시켜 마쇄하였다. 이후 각 식물체 100g을 35% 에틸알코올 1,000ml에서 7일간 추출하였다. 추출물은 30%로 희석하여 주 2회씩 총 3주간 배추에 엽면살포하였다. 엽면적, 엽수, 지상부 및 지하부 생체중 등 생육특성을 7일 간격으로 조사하였으며 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 엽면적과 엽폭은 환삼덩굴 처리구에서 104.58cm2와 9.80cm로 가장 넓었고, 엽장은 박주가리 처리구에서 25.24cm로 가장 길었으며, 지하부 생체중은 메리골드 처리구에서 6.24g으로 가장 높았다. 엽수는 애플민트와 마늘 처리구에서 6.4개로 가장 많았고, 지상부 생체중과 엽록소는 집단 간 유의한 차이가 나타나지 않았다. 전반적으로 무처리 대비 엽면적 22%, 엽폭 18%의 유의한 생장 차이를 보인 환삼덩굴 추출물과 엽면적 12%, 엽장 17%의 생장 차이를 보인 박주가리 추출물, 엽면적 10%, 엽폭 9%의 생장 차이를 보인 양파 추출물이 엇갈이 배추 생육에 효과적인 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구결과 환삼덩굴, 박주가리, 양파 등 일부 식물추출물이 엇갈이 배추의 생육을 증진시킬 수 있는 것으로 나타나 주말농장 등 도시텃밭에 활용할 수 있을 것으로 사료되었다. 향후 식물추출물의 효과성을 증진시키기 위해 추출 방법과 적정 농도, 보관 시기 등에 대한 연구와 함께 도시텃밭 해충방제 효과를 알아보기 위한 약해검정과 살충효과를 분석할 필요성이 있다.

Analysis of Growth and Flowering of Thymus quinquecostatus Using Smart Farming System (스마트 재배시스템을 활용한 백리향 생장 및 개화 분석)

  • 백리향(Thymus quinquecostatus)은 꿀풀과의 낙엽반관목으로 국내에서 자생하는 허브 식물 중 하나이다. 백리향은 특유의 좋은 향기 및 항산화, 항염증, 항균, 미백 등의 효능을 가지는 각종 폴리페놀 성분을 함유하고 있어 의약품이나 기능성 식품, 화장품의 천연 소재 원료로 활용되고 있다. 국내에서 백리향은 재배 환경에 맞추어 주로 고산지대의 노지에서 재배되고 있다. 노지 재배는 지역, 시기, 기후 등의 외부환경에 영향을 받아서 백리향의 유효성분, 품질 및 생산성을 안정적으로 유지하기 어렵다는 한계를 가지고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 스마트팜 시스템을 활용하여 백리향의 유효 성분 등을 안정적으로 얻기 위한 생장조건을 탐색하기 위해 4종의 Light Emitting Diode(LED) 광원과 4종의 토양 조성에 따라서 백리향의 생육조건을 수행하였다. LED는 white, purple, RGB1, RGB2를 사용하였으며, 토양은 상토:펄라이트 비율(상토, 5:1, 3:1, 1:1)로 조성하여 백리향 묘목을 이식한 뒤 생장과 개화시기를 분석하였다. 재배환경은 백리향 재배지의 기상 데이터를 참고하여 동일하게 설정하였으며, 총 8주 동안 생육상태를 관찰하였다. 연구 결과 백리향 재배 4주차에 일부 개체에서 봉오리가 올라오며 개화를 시작하였으며, 8주차에는 대부분의 조건에서 개화를 관찰할 수 있었다. 백리향의 지상부 면적을 비교한 결과 가장 우수한 생장을 보이는 조건은 토양은 3(상토):1(펄라이트) 비율로 분석되었다. 따라서 이번 연구 결과를 바탕으로 백리향 재배에 스마트팜 농업 기술을 활용한다면 기존 노지 재배 한계를 보완하여 안정적이고 지속적인 백리향을 생산할 수 있을것으로 기대된다.
