  • A complete control on quarantine insect pests is required for exporting domestic apples to other countries. To this end, a controlled atmosphere and heat treatment system (CATTS) has been developed as a post-harvest treatment. This study determined the CATTS conditions to control completely two lepidopteran insect pests, the smaller tea tortrix moth, Adoxophyes paraorana and the peach pyralid moth, Dichocrocis punctiferalis, which exhibit different feeding behviors. In both species, the fifth instar larvae were the most tolerant developmental stage to the heat treatment. Under CATTS conditions with 15% $CO_2$ and 1% $O_2$ for 1 h heat treatment at $46^{\circ}C$, the fifth instar larvae of A. paraorana exhibited a complete lethality, while those of D. punctiferalis underwent 88% mortality. To control completely the fifth instar larvae of D. punctiferalis, 2 h heat treatment required under the same atmosphere condition. These CATTS treatment effects were confirmed against over 3,000 fifth instar larvae of each species infesting apples. This study demonstrates that the longer exposure to CATTS conditions is required for the complete disinfestation of the internal apple feeder compared to the non-internal apple feeder.

  • The pest species occurring on the aboveground parts of Phalaenopsis orchids were studied for a period of two years (Aug. 2013 to June 2015) at 9 Phalaenopsis farms in Korea. In total, 10 species of insect pest were identified : Tenuipalpus pacificus Baker, Tyrophagus putrescentiae Schrank, Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande, Frankliniella intonsa Trybom, Thrips tabaci Lindeman, Scirtothrips dorsalis Hood, Pseudococcus dendrobiorum Williams, Pseudococcus longispinus Targioni Tozzetti, Coccus hesperidum L., Limax marginatus $M{\ddot{u}}ller$. T. pacificus occurred in most of the farms surveyed in this study (6). The observation frequency of T. pacificus and F. intonsa were highest, they were observed in 10 out of 96 surveys. Although P. longispinus was only observed to occur on two farms, their observation frequency (9 observations, 9.4%) and density (2-289 per 20 plants) were high. Thus, it seems that T. pacificus, F. intonsa, and P. longispinus are the major pests affecting Phalaenopsis orchid farms in Korea.

  • In order to establish an effective pest control strategy, we investigated the occurrence of lepidopteran insects in the major trees growing in urban forests from 2019 to 2021. In total, we recorded 76 species of 14 families in Prunus spp., 40 species of eight families in Acer spp., 43 species of 10 families in Zelkova serrata, 28 species of seven families in Rhododendron spp., and 10 species of four families in Hibiscus syriacus. Among these, Hyphantria cunea and Lymantria dispar were recorded from all five tree taxa monitored. The most frequently occurring species in the different tree groups were as follows: H. cunea and Phalera flavescens in Prunus yedoensis, Epinotia ulmicola in Z. serrata, and Rehimena surusalis in H. syriacus. H. cunea also occurred in Rhododendron spp. and Acer spp., although the numbers were lower than those recorded in Prunus spp. and Z. serrata. Our results highlight the importance of focusing on the frequency of occurrence of lepidopteran insects in Prunus spp. and Z. serrata, whereas the presence of these insects in both Acer spp. and Rhododendron spp. Appears to be less problematic. From the perspective of reducing the risks to human health, our findings indicate that the application of pheromones for monitoring lepidopteran species and the use of mating disruptors would be desirable approaches that would contribute to minimizing the spraying of pesticides in urban forests.

  • The recent global climate change induced the drought, flooding, and insect pest outbreaks. These caused the severe damage to crop yield in the domesticated field and occurrence change of insect pest species. The sap-sucking insect pest, aphids are common in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] and cause serious yield losses. Thus, developing resistance cultivars is promising and efficient strategy to prevent the significant yield losses by aphid and screening germplasm is the essential procedure to achieve this goal. We tried to establish a resistance test indicator for foxglove aphid, Aulacorthum solani (Kaltenbach), in soybean and found that plant damage degree or infested plant damage is most suitable one. Also we screened around 1,200 of soybean germplasm including wild and cultivated species for its resistance to foxglove aphid from the various origins, and 67 soybeans, including PI 366121, showed antixenosis resistance, 31 germplasms among 67 antixenosis germplasms were showed antibiosis to foxglove aphid with non-choice test. The identified foxglove aphid resistant soybean resources showed significantly low rate in survival test. Furthermore, resistance type, (i.e., antibiosis or antixenosis) of each candidate were varied. In this research, we established the screening index for foxglove aphid resistance in soybean, and identified the resistance varieties. This result could be useful resources in breeding for new foxglove aphid resistance soybean cultivars, and provide fundamental information to investigate the resistance mechanism in soybean.

  • This study was conducted to determine the relationship of larval density of tobacco cutworm, Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) to damage in greenhouse sweet pepper. Laboratory experiments, cage experiments by artificial release and field investigation were carried out in 2008. The leaf consumption rate increased greatly with larval development. The damaged leaves had several round or oval shape holes on the surface or lost certain parts of them, and the fruit damaged had a conspicuous hole on the surface or scar marks around the calyx. In the field investigation, fruit damage was highly correlated with larval densities and reached 3.5% damage at maximum. Cage experiments showed that numbers of non-marketable fruit increased as increasing larval densities released. The larval density at two weeks before harvest had a high relationship with the percentage of damaged-fruit at harvest. Corresponding larval density caused 1, 3, 5% of damaged-fruit was 0.2, 0.5, 0.8 larvae per plant, respectively.

  • Archives have historical and academic values. That is why the study of preservation conditions and the environment for the effective management of various records progress. However, materials such as paper and adhesives will inevitably cause biological damages. These damages spread into the inner side of archives, which would make it impossible to recover. For example, archival records from Malaysia and Oman are easily exposed to biological damage because of these countries' hot and humid climate. As such, once records are damaged, disinfection operations are customary in these areas. Methyl bromide (MeBr) and ethylene oxide (EtO) were used in the disinfection process as they showed good insecticidal effect. However their antibacterial effect are negligible. As such, the need for an environmental-friendly fumigator was evident. An environmental-friendly fumigator is designed to improve storage stability. Such equipment is expected to contribute to prevention of damages to cultural heritages through its use of vaporization technology, maintenance of a disinfection space (chamber), and self-generation of nitrogen.

  • Occurrence of scarabs at sweet persimmon (Diospyros kaki var. Fuyu) orchards was investigated by mercury light traps every one week interval in several areas in Gyeongnam province including, Jinju, Sacheon, Sancheong, and Gimhae, from April to September in 2000 and 2001. In addition, damage of persimmon by scarabs was observed every ten days interval at three orchards in Jinju and at one in Gimhae from late May to late October. Although sixteen species of 12 genera were attracted to the traps, species and number of catches were different according to orchards and years. Holotrichia morosa was most dominant in Jinju, Sacheon, and Sancheong. Total number of scarabs attracted to the traps was highest at the orchard surrounded by chestnut orchards in Sancheong. Fruits of sweet persimmon were not damaged by scarabs at the studied orchards. However, leaves and calyxes were slightly damaged by Adoretus tenuimaculatus. Maximum average numbers of the damaged leaves and calyxes throughout the year by A. tenuimaculatus were 0.33 leaves from 10 new shoots and 0.07 calyxes from 15 fruits. Gametis jucunda and Popillia mutans damaged flowers and calyxes. Maximum average numbers of damaged flowers and calyxes by these 2 species were the same as 0.03 from 15 flowers and 15 calyxes, respectively. These levels of damage suggest that the scarabs are not economically injurious to sweet persimmon fruits in Korea.

  • As a primary study on the economic injury level of A. tokionis larval populations in tobacco fields, we carried out some experiments for the evaluation of sampling efficiency of 3 sampling methods (pit-fall traps of apple pomace and rice bran, and clover patches) for the larval population and the regressions between loss and infested larval density The $10\times10cm$ clover patch showed a better sampling efficiency $11.8\;to\;18.0\%$ than the others. The sampling efficiency of clover patch becomes higher when the plots did not have any green plants. The linear regression equation (Y=4.2+1.383x) between loss (Y:kg/10a) and infested larval density (X: no. of larvae/plot) which was obtained by substitution of damage ratio and corrected damage ratio fitted the observed data better than the one (Y=2.68X) obtained without substitioning.
