  • Present studies were carried out to get a basic information for biological control of soybean rod borer, Grapholitha glycinivorella Matsumura, causing main injury in soybean cultivation in Korea. 1474 native strains were cultivated in field to evaluate the pod borer damage. Pubescence density and color, maturity group, seed coat color, aphid and general leaf damage and seed damage by pod borer were investigated, and determined among their relationships. As another basic study for ecological control of insect, 6 leading varieties were planted on different planting date with 3 levels of plant spacing, on which pod borer damage and some related agronomic characters were studied. The results obtained one summarized as follows: Average injury of soybean pod borer was $5.2\%$ ranging $0-38\%$ in 1474 strains planted on 20 May. Non-significant correlations were found between pod borer damage and pubescence density and color, while pod borer damage closely related with maturity groupand aphid damage at $5\%$ level ofttests. Most severe damage was found in green seed coast color and maturity group V. Late and sparse plantings tend to have more damages to the pod borer than those of early and dense plantings. Pod setting date and period of pod maturing seemed related with pod borer damage. Bongeui and Chungbuk-baik cultivars were resistance to soybean pod borer, while Clark and Kumkang-daerip were susceptible in field tests.

  • Temporary control schedules were tested at sweet persimmon orchards to development new control programs to meet the quarantine repuirements of America in 2001 and 2002. The 'MRL-type control orchards' were sprayed with chemicals which were possibly adaptable to the pome trees in America. A control schedule consisted of those chemicals registered for persimmon in Korea was incorporated in the 'domestic-type control orchards'. The efficacy of these two control type against insect pests was compared with that of a conventional control schedule. In 2001, MRL orchard and domestic orchard were sprayed 7 and 6 times, and two conventional orchards were 6 and 9 times, respectively. In 2002, acaricide was added once to the MRL orchards at late September to reduce the density of mites on harvested fruits. However no insecticide to plant bug control could be applied to the MRL orchards, because no insecticide against bugs was registered for pome trees in America. This resulted in 7 times of applications in MRL and domestic orchards. The conventional orchard was sprayed 9 times. Only the occurrence of the peach pyralid moth, Dichocrocis puntiferalis (PPM) out of 4 quarantine inset species was observed. The PPM was observed during growing season in MRL, domestic, and conventional orchards. However no fruits damaged by PPM larvae were observed after mid October and after harvest. In 2002 only 1 fruit out of 1,350 fruits inspected in June was damaged by the larvae of PPM at MRL orchards. A fungus-feeding mites and collembolan were under calyx of vested fruits. In 2001 they were found on 45.3% of harvested fruits at MRL orchard. However the percentage of fruits with mites in 2002 was greatly reduced to 3.5% at MRL orchard, presumably because of a added application of acaricide at late September. However percentage of fruits damage by hemipteran bugs at harvesting time was quite high 11.3 % at MRL orchards, because no application of insecticide against plant bugs.

  • In this study, a smartphone application for reporting trees infected with pine wilt disease was developed to prevent the spread of the disease by the disease-carrying pests/insects, which is most damning to the country's pine trees, South Korea's representative tree species, and to ensure the sustained maintenance of the country's forest trees. Such application for handling information on the infected pine trees has three key components, as shown below. (1) Explanation of the pine wilt disease pests/insects, (2) Image capture of the infected pine tree, and transmission of its GPS location, (3) Inquiry on the neighboring area infected with pine wilt disease. It is possible to promptly provide the spatial information of the areas infected with pine wilt disease by developing a dedicated application for reporting trees infected with the disease based on GPS information. If users participate actively in the application and integration with the forest service application is to be realized, the application would be more actively utilized.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate population dynamics of white grubs and its damages in sweet potato fields. There were three species of white grubs that fed on the roots of sweet potato in Honam area. Among them, Holofrichia parallela was a major insect pest. Damage rate of sweet potato by white grubs were about 2 to 40% differed with regions. In some region where it was severe the damage rate of sweet potato was about 80% or more. H. parallela overwintered as a late 3rd instar larvae in soil from late October to late-June, and the survival rate of them was 92%. The occurrence pattern of H. parallela larvae varied in different seasons. In sweet potato field, H. parallela larvae populations started being observed during late-July to mid.-August. The damage by the grub began to occur late-August in field and lasted to the harvest time.

  • Popillia quqdriguttata is a serious insect pest in Korean golf courses. The adult feeds on leaves of latifoliate trees and herbaceous plants while the larva feeds on roots of turfgrass. Thus, control of p. quadriguttata adults was tried with registered insecticides in golf courses in Korea. The insecticides used in the experiments were carbaryl + phosalone WP, chlorpyrifos + diflubenzuron WP, chlorpyrifos-methyl EC, deltamethrin EC, etofenprox WP, etofenprox + diazinon WP, etofenprox + tebufenozide EC, fenitrothion EC, imidacloprid SC, pyraclofos WP, and tralomethrin EC. Mortalities of P. quadriguttata were over 95% in carbaryl + phosalone WP, chlorpyrifos + diflubenzuron WP, etofenprox + diazinon WP, and fenitrothion EC at petri dish and in greenhouse. In the field test, corrected mortality of P. quadriguttata was 95.2% and 80.9% in carbaryl 40% +phosalone 20% WP and fenitrothion 50% EC, respectively. Spreading agent enhanced toxic effect of used insecticides to p. quadriguttata adults except carbaryl + phosalon 20% EC. p. quadriguttata adult was firstly observed to feed on leaves of Canna generalis at the Yongwon golf club in Jinhae, Gyeongnam and Prunus ameriaca var. ansu and p. salicina at the Anyang Honest golf club in Gunpo, Cyeonggi. Therefure, host plants off quadriguftata became 29 species of 26 genera in 19 families. Zoysia matreila at the fairway and roughs of Anyang Benest golf club was damaged by p. quadriguttata larvae in Octomber, 2002 and not recovered in April, 2003. Damaged turfgrass became yellowish and wilted and that retarded recovering in the following spring.

  • The effect of gamma irradiation on controlling infestation of insects on rice grain were investigated. The egg and larva stages of rice weevil (Sitophilus oryzae) were more radiosensitive than the pupal and adult stages. The complete mortal dose of the first two stages was 0.05kGy, while it was 0.5kGy in the second two stages. In indian-meal moth (plodia interpuctella Hubner), sterile doses of egg, larva, pupa and adult were 0.04 to 0.05, 0.05 to 0.06 and 0.2 to 0.25kGy, respectively. Therefore, the irradiation dose within 1.0kGy was considered to be effective for rice storage so far as reinfestation was prevented. Attractiveness of indian-meal moth toward the rice irradiated at 1.0 to 5.0kGy was non-significant in F-test.
