Business Performance Indicators and Determinants Analysis of Small and Medium Sized Shipping Logistics Companies in Korea - Using 2015 Economic Census Data (국내 중소 해운물류기업의 경영성과지표 산정 및 결정요인 분석 - 2015년 경제총조사 자료를 이용하여)

  • This paper analyzes comparatively business performance indicators and determinants of small and medium sized shipping logistics companies in Korea, using 2015 economic census data. For this purpose, this study estimates various business performance indicators according to 2015 small and medium sized companies classification standards, including operating income to sales and gross value-added to sales. In addition, this study analyzes determinants of business performance using generalized least squares models. The results indicate that average sales, operating income and value-added, sales and operating income per worker, operating income to sales, and material cost to sales of large sized companies are higher than those of small and medium sized companies. The business performance indicators differ by industry and size. Moreover, the determinants of business performance are analyzed in terms of the unemployment rate (-), number of employees (-), sales (+), labor cost ratio (+), and labor cost per employee (-) and the impacts of the individual explanatory variables based on elasticity are different. Finally, this quantitative information could be used to improve the business performance of domestic shipping logistics companies.

  • 유엔(UN)산하의 국제해사기구(IMO)에서 설립한 세계해사대학(WMU : World Maritime University)이 명실상부한 세계 해운전문인력의 메카로 떠오르고 있다. 2년제 석사과정의 학생 70~80%가 세계 각국의 정부 해운관련부처의 관료이며, 나머지는 해운관련 단체 및 기업 관계자들이다. 지난 1983년 이후 2006년 까지 140여 국가 출신 2000여 명의 졸업생 배출한 세계해사대학의 전모를 알아본다.

A DEA and Malmquist Index Approach to Measuring Productivity and Efficiency of Korean's Shipping Firms (DEA와 Malmquist 지수를 활용한 외항해운기업의 효율성 및 생산성 분석)

  • This study analyzes the efficiency of 25 shipping companies in Korea over the period 2005-2009, using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). Among 31 companies that listed in order of decreasing sales volume for the period 2006-2010, the sample companies has been selected on the ground of data availability. This study computes the companies' efficiency, estimates their year-on-year Malmquist productivity index, and analyzes the cause leads to the changes in the productivity, In particular, this study attempts, by dividing the companies into two group, listed or not, to compare the changes in the productivity and analyze the reasons. The results from static analysis based on CCR and BCC model indicate that listed companies are higher efficient than unquoted companies. The results from tests on the productivity changes based on the Malmquist productivity index show that 19 unquoted companies increase their average productivity by 16.2 percent year after year during the period but 6 listed companies increase by 0.5% during the same period.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the components and to verify the relationship between service orientation, employee satisfaction, customer orientation and business performance of liner shipping company. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, literature survey related to service orientation, employee satisfaction, customer orientation and business performance was carried out and took a empirical analysis by the use of questionnaire method for employees in liner shipping company. The final results and conclusions are as follows; Service orientation of liner shipping company is a major element which has an effect on employee satisfaction. It has also effect on employee's dedicational attitude to achieve company's goal with pride on their duty and organization. In addition to, the relationship between service orientation, employee satisfaction, customer orientation and business performance finally reach to valuable attitude related in customer's satisfaction, and then it will read up high business performance and successful attainment.

  • This study primarily analyzed the use of shipping companies' welfare program by the characteristics of crew's demography and working condition on board, and next examined the effect of the satisfaction to the program on the organizational commitment and job satisfaction to the companies, in order to survey the shipping companies' welfare reality which has performed an influential role to meet the various welfare needs of personal crew. According to the findings in the recent survey of 459 seamen on board, there are differences among the use of the program by crew's the tolerance to work on board and personal characteristics, for example, age, marriage, position, period on board, and years of service. Moreover, the study verified the fact that the higher satisfaction to the use of those program, the higher organizational commitment and job satisfaction of crew.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of the factors on the usage level of e-business in the shipping companies. In order to do empirical analysis, firstly, this study carried out reliability analysis and factor analysis. Secondly, this study examined the effects of the factors on the usage level of e-business in the shipping companies by multiple regression analysis. In conclusion, the analysis result revealed that 5 factors effect on the service business usage's level and 4 factors effect on the real transaction usage's level of e-business.

  • Nowadays, there is increasing demand for a training program to transfer advanced knowledge of shipping and port logistics with the investments in overseas shipping and port market. A current training program in the field of shipping and port logistics has a short-term achievement, but domestic logistics companies do not utilize the training program to penetrate into the overseas market. Therefore, this paper investigates domestics logistics companies' overseas business activities, and current operation and problems of a training program. In addition, this paper presents how to utilize a training program for domestics shipping and port logistics companies to penetrate successfully into the overseas market.

  • The competition between ship management companies is fierce as a result of global trend towards increased specialization. In order for ship management companies to remain competitive, it is necessary to understand the local and global factors and the changing circumstances that impact shipping markets and trade patterns. To better understand these factors, a study and analysis of drawing priority of the competitiveness-evaluation factors of ship management companies was conducted using Analytical Hierarchy Process(AHP) as a method dealing with dicision-making problem. As a consequence of this analysis, it was determined that human resources, both shipboard and land management, were a primary factor in ship management company's competitiveness. Thus, the acquisition and retention of capable staff was a key aspect of assuring a ship management company's competitiveness.

A Study on the Intention to Use and the Actual Use of Maritime Logistics Mobile Application (해운물류 모바일 애플리케이션의 사용의도와 사용에 관한 연구)

  • The quick spread of smartphones has affected not only individual life but also the way companies conduct their businesses. Employees is their business work using a variety of mobile devices including smartphones and are in constant collaboration with one another by sharing corporate information. Accordingly, constant an increasing number of businesses have adopted mobile applications for work, especially in the field of maritime logistics, where maritime logistics mobile applications are utilized to track cargos and to provide visibility. Through surveys, this study did empirical analyses to find out the intention to use maritime logistics mobile applications of maritime logistics workers, and the find out factors affecting their actual use of mobile applications developed and used in the domestic maritime logistics industry. As for study variables, social influence, innovation, perceived value, and collaboration between companies were used as factors that affect the intention to use mobile applications. In addition, as a tool for measuring the actual use of mobile applications, which is necessary for figuring out the relationship between the intention to use them and their actual use, the connecting frequency and using time were used. A total of 168 surveys were used in the hypothesis test. The results of the analyses are as follow: First, the three variables of social influence, innovation, and perceived value positively affected the intention to use maritime logistics mobile applications. However, collaboration between companies did not affect the intention to use the applications. Second, the intention to use the mobile applications positively affected the actual use.
