Development of Line Density Index for the Quantification of Oceanic Thermal Fronts (해양의 수온전선 정량화를 위한 선밀도 지수 개발)

  • Line density index(LDI) was developed to quantify a densely isothermal line rate as standard index in the ocean environment. Theoretical background on the LDI development process restricting index range 0 to 100 was described. And validation test was done for the LDI application condition that total line length is not greater than 1/10 of unit area. NOAA SST(Sea Surface Temperature) data were used for the experimental application of LDI in the South Sea of Korea. Using GIS, $0.1^{\circ}C$ isothermal lines were linearized as vector data form SST raster data, and unit area were built as polygon data. For the LDI calculation, spatial overlapping(line in polygon) was implemented. To analyze the effect of unit area size for the LDI distribution, two cases of unit area size were designed and descriptive statistics was calculated including performing normality test. The results showed no change of LDI's essential characteristics such as mean and normality except for the range of value, variance and standard deviation. Accordingly, it was found that complex structure of thermal front and even smaller scale of front width than unit area size could influence on the LDI distribution. Also, correlation analysis performed between LDI and difference of temperature(${\Delta}T^{\circ}C$), and horizontal thermal gradient(${\Delta}T^{\circ}C/km$) on the front was obtained from linear regression model. This obtained value was compared with the results from previous researches. Newly developed LDI can be used to compare the thermal front regions changing spatio-temporally in the ocean environment using absolute index value. It is considered to be significant to analyze the relationship between thermal front and marine environment or front and marine organisms in a quantitative approach described in this study.

  • It's important to develop Metadata standard to manage a large of marine geospatial data such as observation, ocean survey, satellite image more effectively. If we use metadata in Marine GIS we can make sense marine geospatial data, make the most of marine dataset. International standard organization's work and NGIS's standard are a good example to illustrate metadata standard's importance. But we don't have metadata standard for marine dataset, so it's difficult to search and use geospatial data In this paper, we presented common marine metadata element, and composited metadata implementation schema.   • In the recent marine sector, the development and standardization regarding S-100, which is the universal hydrographical data model standard for development of marine space information, was progressed, and for the effectiveness of marine chart production work and the multi-purpose use of water level data in S-100, S-102(Bathymetric Surface grid) standard development and various studies of BAG formats combined with water level and uncertainty, property information is being progressed. Since the water level information that is important in the operation of the ship is provided based on S-102, the calibration method of the location information when producing S-102 is an important factor in deciding the water level. In this study, the hydrographical surveying was conducted by piloting the standardized method for the production of S-102 in Korea, and have compared the accuracy of water level information according to the GNSS post treatment calibration method. As a result of comparing the water level in 2 places in the rocky terrain of the study area, the northern water level of Namu-do was shown as DL 0.79~0.83m, the eastern water level of Daeho-do was DL 12.63~12.91m, and the horizontal position errors of the intermittent sunshine water level were confirmed to be within 1m. As a result, the intermittent sunshine water level according to the location calibration method when producing the BAG was confirmed that it was in the available range for a ship's safe voyage. However, the accuracy verification for the location of the ship when conducting hydrographical surveying was judged that there is a need for a various additional study about regional characteristics and environment factor.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the feasibility of OTEC(Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion) operation, in the East Sea of Korea. Accumulated cruise data of NFRDI (National Fisheries Research and Development Institute) over the period 1966~1995 were used to locate appropriate spot by season as well as by latitude which would show the difference at least $15^{\circ}C$ or more between the surface layer and each depth of 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 400 and 500m. Our results showed that the coastal areas of Pohang city met the requirement of more than $20^{\circ}C$ difference for OTEC plant from August to October. In contrast, in case that $15^{\circ}C$ would be possible thermal difference to operate OTEC plant, most coastal areas in the East Sea including Pohang from June to December are potential candidates for this future energy source. Therefore, we present in this paper the first option to locate the best place for OTEC plant operation using Geographical Information System (GIS), which is currently used for multi-dimensional space analysis.

  • This paper will develope an ocean environmental evaluation system. The system analysis by means of introducing the object oriented pattern analysis methodology. We will test water quality according to 40 sea water measurement points and evaluate the ocean environment by means of spatial statistical method. By analyzing the object oriented pattern ocean environmental system, we will contribute on enhancing the efficient development and maintenance other geographic information system.

  • Today, satellite remote sensing and geographic information systems plays an important role as a advanced science and technology, and becomes a superpower tool of the study and research in various fields of Earth Science. This study reviews the application of satellite remote sensing and geographic information systems for many specialists in the fields of the fishery and ocean science. In future, satellite remote sensing and geographic information systems will be greatly used to observed, monitor and predict various phenomena associated with the fisheries and oceans, in order to seek safety in a natural disaster, and menage and conserve the fisheries and resources and the oceanic environments.

Development of an Integrated DataBase System of Marine Geological and Geophysical Data Around the Korean Peninsula (한반도 해역 해양지질 및 지구물리 자료 통합 DB시스템 개발)

  • An integrated database(DB) system was developed to manage the marine geological data and geophysical data acquired from around the Korean peninsula from 2009 to 2013. Geological data such as size analysis data, columnar section images, X-ray images, heavy metal data, and organic carbon data of sediment samples, were collected in the form of text files, excel files, PDF files and image files. Geophysical data such as seismic data, magnetic data, and gravity data were gathered in the form of SEG-Y binary files, image files and text files. We collected scientific data from research projects funded by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, data produced by domestic marine organizations, and public data provided by foreign organizations. All the collected data were validated manually and stored in the archive DB according to data processing procedures. A geographic information system was developed to manage the spatial information and provide data effectively using the map interface. Geographic information system(GIS) software was used to import the position data from text files, manipulate spatial data, and produce shape files. A GIS DB was set up using the Oracle database system and ArcGIS spatial data engine. A client/server GIS application was developed to support data search, data provision, and visualization of scientific data. It provided complex search functions and on-the-fly visualization using ChartFX and specially developed programs. The system is currently being maintained and newly collected data is added to the DB system every year.

  • According to the Maritime Safety Act, there are all 34 routes including 5 traffic safety zones, 3 traffic separation schemes, 26 routes designated by regional maritime affairs departments in the Republic of Korea. In the SOLAS convention, the route information should be is effectively used for the safe navigation. However, the route information is complicatedly composed of the location of the route, the navigation rule by each route, the restriction of the navigation, and the anchorages. Moreover, the present method of providing information using the navigational chart and other publications is not effective for users to grasp the navigational information. Therefore, it was conducted to study the design of the S-100 based routing information data model developed by the International Hydrographic Organization to find ways to more effectively provide route information. To do this, the analysis of route requirement, selection of items, encoding test and users' review were carried out. Through expert user review, it was evaluated that the study on the design of the route information data model can be utilized as a good basic data for the route information integration service. Future research on the development of route information data models is expected to provide integrated route information services.

A Study on the Mapping of Fishing Activity using V-Pass Data - Focusing on the Southeast Sea of Korea - (선박패스(V-Pass) 자료를 활용한 어업활동 지도 제작 연구 - 남해동부해역을 중심으로 -)

  • Marine spatial planning(MSP) designates the marine as nine kinds of use zones for the systematic and rational management of marine spaces. One of them is the fishery protection zone, which is necessary for the sustainable production of fishery products, including the protection and fosterage of fishing activities. This study intends to quantitatively identify the fishing activity space, one of the elements necessary for the designation of fisheries protection zones, by mapping of fishery activities using V-Pass data and deriving the fishery activity concentrated zone. To this end, pre-processing of V-Pass data was performed, such as constructing a dataset that combines static and dynamic information, calculating the speed of fishing vessels, extracting fishing activity points, and removing data in non-fishing activity zone. Finally, using the selected V-Pass point data, a fishery activity map was made by kernel density estimation, and the concentrated space of fishery activity was analyzed. In addition, it was confirmed that there is a difference in the spatial distribution of fishing activities according to the type of fishing vessel and the season. The pre-processing technique of large volume V-Pass data and the mapping method of fishing activities performed through this study are expected to contribute to the study of spatial characteristics evaluation of fishing activities in the future.

아리랑 1호 임무운영 결과

  • 우리나라 최초의 실용급 지구관측위성인 아리랑 1호는 지난 2003년 2월 21일부로 목표로 하였던 임무운영기간 3년을 완수하였다. 아리랑 1호의 정상 임무운영에 사용되는 탑재체는 전장광학카메라, 해양관측카메라, 그리고 우주과학 탑재체이며, 2001년 8월 원인을 알 수 없는 과전류 발생으로 임무가 중단된 우주과학 탑재체를 .제외한 나머지 탑재체들은 임무 운영기간동안 정상적으로 운영되었다. 전자광학카메라는 한반도를 비롯한 전 세계를 대상으로 지리정보를 위한 영상자료를 획득하는 것이 목적이었으며, 해양관측카메라는 생물학적 해양지도 및 해양환경 관측을 위한 자료를 획득하는 것이다. 우주과학 탑재체는 고에너지 전하입자에 의한 Single Event Upset현상, 우주방사능 관측, 그리고 전자의 온도 및 밀도 측정이 주요 목표였다. 당초 목표했던 임무운영기간을 초과한 현재(2003년 7월 1일 기준)까지 우주과학 탑재체를 제외한 나머지 탑재체들은 정상적으로 운영되고 있다. 본 논문은 아리랑 1호 발사 후 약 3년 6개월간의 기간동안 수행된 탑재체 운영결과들을 정리하였다.
