  • Phytoplankton samples, collected about twenty day interval on May of 1967, at same twenty-one stations located in the north-eastern Korea Strait were examined in an attempt to determine the specific distribution and abundance of phytoplankton. Water bottle samples preserved with neutralized formula were used for the phytoplankton study. In May, water temperature and salinity show both lower at the sea of Korea side than that of Japan side, and both indicate gradually higher to the sea of Japan side. Fourty-six species of diatoms and three species of dinoflagellates in early May, and thirty-six species of diatoms and six species of dinoflagellates in the May were detected. Among them thirty species of diatoms and two species of dinoflagellates were appeared commonly in both cruise. Chaetoceros curvisetus and Rhizosolenia castracanei were wide distributed species, and Leptocylindrus danicus was the most numerous species at this sea in May. In generally, the sea of Korea side was more rich in species and numbers of phytoplankton.

  • We studied spatial and temporal distributions of the phytoplankton and their relationships to physico-chemical environmental factors in the western Jinhae Bay, Korea from November 2003 to August 2004. In most cases, physico-chemical environmental factors showed homogeneous distribution. The phytoplankton communities were composed of mainly diatoms and dinoflagellates, and their standing crops ranged from $16{\times}10^3\;cells\;l^{-1}\;to\;5,845{\times}10^3\;cells\;l^{-1}$ (with a mean value of $555{\times}10^3\;cells\;l^{-1}$). The bloom of phytoplankton was observed in Gohyun Port in the summer. Seasonal variation of phytoplankton standing crops was higher in winter and summer than in spring and autumn. The dominant species were Skeletonema costatum, Akashiwo sanguinea, Pseudo-nitzschia pungens, Dactyliosolen sp., Leptocylindrus danicus, cryptomonads and etc. Especially, S. costatum was predominant in the summer and A. sanguinea (spring and autumn), Pseudo-nitzschia sp. (summer), Guinardia striata (spring), unidentified flagellates (summer) and cryptomonads (spring) appeared to be an opportunistic species. Concentrations of Chl a ranged from $0.6{\mu}g{\cdot}l^{-1}\;to\;16.7{\mu}g{\cdot}l^{-1}$ (with a mean value of $3.4{\mu}g{\cdot}l^{-1}$). The results of the canonical correspondence analysis implies the study area was grouped into the 2 water masses (inner and outer waters of Gohyun Port) and inner waters had higher abundance and Chl a concentration than outer waters. Also, phytoplankton sanding crops were related with temperature, DO and nutrients ($SiO^2$, TN, TP and etc.) in inner waters. Inner water-mass of Gohyun Port expanded between Gacho Is. and Chilchon Is. during the winter.

  • Monthly observation of phytoplankton were made from September, 1974 to June 1975 at three stations in the Masan Bay. Sixty three species of phytoplankton (diatoms), representing 25 genera were taken in this study. Of these Skeletonema costatum, Eucampis zoodiacus, Ditylum brightwellii, Chaetoceros debilis, Coscinosira polychorda, and Leptocylindrus danicus were the dominant species in this area. By the ecological division the neritic species occupied 85.71% of total diatom diversity and it showed the characteristics of emayment. Diversity index(H) were the lowest in January and May in surface, while the highest in October. Phytoplankton standing crop varied extensively by months; ranging from 3,780 to 7,642,798 cells/l. total phytoplankton standing crop showed three major peaks in September, December and May. After bloom diatom standing crop were decreased gradually and showed minimum in November and February.

  • Environmental impact assessment(EIA) on the construction and operation of thermal power plant(TPP) is aimed at promoting sustainable coastal development by clearly identifying the marine physics and organisms effects of the project on the surrounding marine environment and minimizing its impact. The primary purpose of this study is to establish EIA guidelines for TPP in order to assess how TPP construction projects influence marine environment and to establish the mitigaion plans of environmental impacts. Through this study, scientific and efficient EIA guidelines for the marine environments were established by a specialist forum consisted of officials from the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, personnel from five public corporations in charge of TPPs and marine environment experts. In the study, fifteen EIA reports (2009~2015) on TPPs submitted were analyzed to identify the shortcomings of current assessment items on marine environment and to collect a wide range of information including EIA report formulation regulations, domestic and overseas environmental survey guidelines and EIA review comments on TPPs. Based on the findings, a specialist forum put together EIA guidelines for TPP construction projects.

  • Using physiological data which had been already published, we investigated variation of phytoplankton communities due to changes of marine environmental factor at 2 stations of northern Gamak Bay from November 2007 to September 2008. Dominant species (occupied species above 10%) were dinoflagellates 1 species and diatom 11 species. Diatom Skeletonema costatum was observed as dominant species during the periods except in summer (i.e. July and August), especially, which occupied above 90% in December. On the other hand, dominant species during summer were diatom Eucampia zodiacus and Chaetoceros spp., Considering the results of other physiological studies, S. costatum might be non-dominant species during summer by following reasons 1) growth rate of E. zodiacus might be taster than that of S. costatum under the temperature during summer although both S. costatum and E. zodiacus are eurythermal and euryhaline species. 2) Species as E. zodiacus characterized by low affinity with light might have a chance to be dominant with increasing optical transparency due to low suspended solids in July. 3) In aspect of nutrition, species of growth strategist as S. costatum could be dominant in relatively low concentration of phosphate and species of storage strategist as E. zodiacus could be dominant in relatively high concentration of phosphate during summer in this study area. In order to understand the phytoplankton dynamics in detail, the physiological informations about strains isolated from this study area are necessary because physiological conditions are different depending on isolated area.

  • In order to understand the seasonal change of phytoplankton as well as the effect of water physico-chemical parameters, we investigated 18 stations in coastal areas of the East Sea in February, May, August and November in 2009. The taxa of phytoplankton observed in this study were classified as 37 Bacillariophyceae, 22 Dinophyceae, 1 Euglenophyceae, 3 Dictyophyceae and 1 Cryptophyceae. Phytoplankton abundance ranged from $1.2{\times}10^3cells/L$ to $246.6{\times}10^3cells/L$(with a mean value of $24.8{\times}10^3cells/L$), the highest biomass was observed in May. The dominant species were Leptocylindrus danicus, Chaetoceros affinis, Pseudo-nitzschia pungens, Thalassionema nitzschioides and etc. Pearson's correlation co-efficient between phytoplankton abundance and other water parameters showed the positive relationships with pH, DO, Secchi-disk depth, and SS, the negative relationships with $SiO_2-Si$. Seasonal patterns of phytoplankton dominant species were affected by the characteristics of water masses based on T-S diagram analysis. In particular, phytoplankton distributional patterns were related with water temperature in May and salinity in August, respectively. According to the result of MDS(Multi-dimensional scaling) using the phytoplankton abundance and species composition, the spatial distribution of phytoplankton were characterized with Ganwon(Group A) and Gyeongbuk(Group B) at the coastal areas of Jukbyeon or Uljin.

  • Three embankments are located in the Chunggye Bay, each named as Changpo, Bokkil and Kuil and environmental changes are expected due to freshwater input. To investigate this phenomenon, three sample sites in front of each embankment gate were selected in Nov. 2006(autumn), Feb. 2007(winter), May. 2007(spring) and Aug. 2007(summer). At every point of embankment spot, large cells(micro-size, >$20\;{\mu}m$) of phytoplankton were turned out to be a major cause of algal bloom in Feb. 2007 and nano-size($2-20\;{\mu}m$) phytoplankton became dominant during rainy season. In rainy season, each point of embankment showed low salinity and transparency with higher ammonium and phosphorus concentrations than dry season. However, the number of phytoplankton has decreased and it is expected that freshwater influx has more influence on high turbidity and radical decrease of salinity than nutrient. According to the results of this study, therefore, nutrient could have more influence on growth of phytoplankton in dry season, but high turbidity and radical changes of salinity have more influence in rainy season.

  • A series of experiments were conducted to establish a marine ecotoxicological standard method using marine primary producers, Skeletonema costatum, Heterosigma akashiwo, Prorocentrum micans, Isochrysis galbana, Tetraselmis suecica as candidate test species. Marine diatom, S. costatum was selected as standard test species in terms of the ecological roles and international uses as test species. Test methods and test acceptability criteria are as follows; $72{\sim}96$ hr population growth inhibition $EC_{50}$ as endpoint. Static non-renewal method, and population growth rates over 0.04/hr in control as test acceptability criterium. S. costatum is widely distributed in the world ocean and used for standard species of marine toxicity test method by ISO (International Standardization Organization). Possible salinity ranges for this test method are $20{\sim}35\;psu$, and reproducibility and interlaboratory test results were consistent through the calibration tests. Sensitivity of the test method was comparable or better than other toxicity tests such as rotifer neonate mortality, bioluminescent bacterial inhibition, seaweed sporulation and sea urchin fertilization tests.

  • Phytoplankton community was investigated in Asan Bay, South Korea. Samples were collected at 5 stations along Asan Bay axis during wet season from June to August, 2006. In June and July, salinity decreased especially at inside stations. Nutrients were high in June and July, however, decreased in August. We observed the community of phytoplankton including diatoms(62.8%), dinoflagellates(17.3%), cryptophytes(14.8%), euglenophytes(1.0%), cyanophytes (0.9%), chlorophytes(0.4%), and some of unidentified taxa(2.8%) during summer 2006 in Asan Bay. In June, dinoflagellates (mainly Prorocentrum sp.(29.6%)) were dominated, accounting for about 43.5% of total cell number, whereas in July and August diatoms (mainly Leptocylindrus sp.(21.4%), Chaetoceros sp.(27.6%)) were dominated occupying 69.1% and 89.9%, respectively. The results suggest that freshwater inputs affected phytoplankton community in the Asan Bay ecosystem.
