  • The spectral-analysis-of-surface-waves (SASW) method is a nondestructive testing method based upon generation and detection of elastic stress waves. SASW is widely used as one of the techniques to determine stiffness profile in engineering geophysics. The essential steps involved are construction of an experimental dispersion curve from data collected in situ, and inversion of the dispersion curve to determine the stiffness profile. The main object of this study is to derive an analytical Jacobian for the inversion. If we set the subsurface to N homogeneous layer, it could save 2N times Jacobian calculation compared to numerical jacobian calculation during inversion. To reconstruct a stiffness profile, constrained damped least square method was applied for the inversion. The algorithm was tested for the numerical data and for the real asphalt and tunnel data, which were able to verify the stiffness profile. The stiffness profile reconstructed by the algorithm showed the possibility to appraise the soundness of tunnel with applications SASW.

  • Numerical characteristics of air chemistry associated with hypersonic flows are described and are compared with those of hydrogen oxygen combustion, applying the partially implicit time integration method to air chemistry. This paper reveals that the time integration of air chemistry needs a chemical Jacobian for stable calculations. However the positive real eigenvalues in air chemistry are relatively smaller than those of hydrogen combustion, and the numerical integration is less sensitive than that with combustion. lt is also found that the application of the partia1ly irnplicit method reduces the computing time without numerical instabilities.

  • Three-dimensional (3-D) resistivity inversion including a topographic effect can be considered theoretically to be the technique of acquiring the most accurate image in the interpretation of resistivity data, because it includes characteristic image that the actual subsurface structure is 3-D. In this study, a finite-element method was used as the numerical method in modeling, and the efficiency of Jacobian calculation has been maximized with sensitivity analysis for the destination block in inversion process. Also, during the iterative inversion, the resolution of inversion can be improved with the method of selecting the optimal value of Lagrange multiplier yielding minimum RMS(root mean square) error in the parabolic equation. In this paper, we present synthetic examples to compare the difference between the case which has the toprographic effect and the other case which has not the effect in the inversion process.

  • In multibody dynamic analysis, one of the most important problems is to reduce computation times for real-time simulation. This paper presents the derivation procedure of equations of motion of a 6${\times}$6 autonomous vehicle in terms of chassis local coordinates which do not require coordinates transformation matrix to enhance efficiency for real-time dynamic analysis. Also, equations of motion are derived using the VT(velocity transformation) technique and symbolic computation method coded by MATLAB. The Jacobian matrix of the equations of motion of a system is derived from symbolic operations to apply the implicit integration method. The analysis results were compared with ADAMS results to verify the accuracy and approve the feasibility of real time analysis.

  • An efficient solution method for harmonic balance techniques with Fourier transform is presented for periodic unsteady flow problems. The present partially-implicit harmonic balance treats the flux terms implicitly and the harmonic source term is solved explicitly. The convergence of the partially Implicit method is much faster than the explicit Runge-Kutta harmonic balance method. The method does not need to compute the additional flux Jacobian matrix from the implicit harmonic source term. Compared with fully implicit harmonic balance method, this partial approach turns out to have good convergence property. Oscillating flows over NACA0012 airfoil are considered to verify the method and to compare with results of explicit R-K(Runge-Kutta) and dual time stepping methods.

  • In this paper, the new casing oscillator, which is a construction machine and which structure is similar to that of a parallel manipulator with redundancy, is proposed. The singularity analysis of this machine is performed by two different methods. First, the singularities are found by the numerical method at configurations where the rank of the Jacobian matrix becomes deficient. The singularities are outside the workspace. To investigate the physical information on these configurations, the singularities are examined by the geometric method at configurations where the casing oscillator cannot resist the external forces and moments applied to the upper platform due to losing static equilibrium. The results of the geometric method are the same as those of the numerical method. It proves that the new casing oscillator is free from the singularity, which causes serious problems to a parallel manipulator.

  • Inversion schemes of 2-D MT survey data generally take enormous computational time and computer memory. In addition, careful attention must be paid in handling MT data, especially in cases of TM mode, inversion results can be seriously distorted because of static effect caused by current channeling across inhomogeneous surface boundaries. There-fore inversion algorithm using the GRRI scheme for TM mode MT data was implemented. This scheme is based on a perturbation analysis with a locally 2-D analysis and local inversions were sequently performed over each divided section without additional forward modelings. The algorithm was applied to several synthetic data for the purpose of verification of its efficiency and applicability. With less computer resources than conventional schemes, it could handle static effect directly by including current channeling across inhomogeneous boundaries. Thus it is expected to be used for an useful tool such as a real-time inversion scheme in the field.
