  • A lipid-soluble extract in ginseng marc was prepared by n-hexane extraction to evaluate its antioxidant and anticancer potential. A hexane extract of ginseng marc (HEGM) possessed a 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl free radical scavenging activity which was related to the amount of total phenolics. Also, HEGM showed a potent inhibitory activity on human non-small cell lung cancer (A549, $GI_{50}=34.0{\mu}g/mL$) and colon cancer (SNU-C4, $GI_{50}=45.2{\mu}g/mL$) cells proliferation in vitro in a concentration-dependent manner as did the hexane extract of ginseng with $GI_{50}$ values of $20.0{\mu}g/mL$ in A549 and $37.0{\mu}g/mL$ in SNU-C4. These results imply that HEGM can be utilized as an antioxidant and anticancer substance.

  • Pulmonary artery sarcoma is a rare disease and hard to diagnose; therefore, suspicion is very important for the diagnosis and treatment. Surgical resection is almost always needed because of progressive right heart failure. Adjuvant chemotherapy and radiation therapy are still controversial. We report a case of a 42-year-old man who had a right pulmonary arterial tumor Curative resection was impossible because the tumor invaded the left pulmonary artery. Palliative endarterectomy was performed followed by radiation therapy. The patient refused the chemotherapy. Until the postoperative 6th month, the residual tumor was stable. However, 15 months later, follow-up chest computed tomography revealed a metastatic pulmonary nodule at left lower lobe and the increased residual tumor. The patient received chemotherapy with limited tumor response. The metastatic nodule and residual tumor did not increase but bone scan revealed a rib metastasis at postoperative 24 months. He will be receiving additional chemotherapy.

  • Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a targeted-tumor treatment system using a photosensitizer, light and oxygen to treat malignant tumor. We have investigated the cytotoxicity of 4 types of phthalocyanine derivative (silver phthalocyanine, iron (III) phthalocyanine, copper (II) phthalocyanine, nickel (II) phthalocyanine) against lung and breast cancers based on photodynamic therapy. As a result, phthalocyanine derivatives indicated a higher anticancer activity on a breast cancer cell line. Among the tested phthalocyanines, silver phthalocyanine (AgPc) showed a lower cytotoxicity against a normal cell line. In addition AgPc gave a good color characteristic when it is solubilized in water. Finally AgPc was selected as a potential antitumor agent for breast cancer.

  • This study was carried out to investigate antimicrobial and antitumoral activities of Candida kefyr TFP7 isolated from Tibetan fermented milk Strains of TFP1∼10 were isolated from Tibetan fermented milk by agar diffusion method using potato dextrose agar(PDA). Antimicrobial activities were examined against 18 microorganisms of food-related bacteria, yeast, algae, fungi and actinomycetes isolated from soil. Antitumor activities were examined against 9 human tumor cell lines. Strains of TFP2∼10 showed strong antimicrobial activities against Micrococcus luteus ATCC l1880, and strains of TFP6∼10 to actinomycetes, Streptomyces murinus JCM 4333. In antitumor test, all isolated strains(TEP1∼10) showed the growth inhibition of SNU-5 and SW-534 by 60% and 70%, respectively. Among those, the strain TFP7 showed the most antitumor activity, which was 77.5% for SNU-5 and 76.5% for SW-534. The strain was identified as Candida kefyr by use of API 20C AUX kit and scanning electron micrograph.

  • It has been studied that relations between electronic structure and anti-tumor activity by variation of amine group in cis-diamminedichloroplatinum (Ⅱ) complexes. We were also interested in these Pt (Ⅱ) complexes interaction with 1-methylcytosine of DNA base and the electronic structure of these complexes in order to understand the mechanism of the metal-nucleobases interaction. The results showed that net charge of center metal in Pt complexes effect anti-tumor activity. The mechanisgm of the bonding between metal and ligands largely based on charge transfer from ligand to metal atom. Furthermore, the established molecular orbitals showed that metal 6p-orbitals played an important role in the bonding scheme for the interactions between platinum (Ⅱ) complexes and 1-methylcytosine. We also found that the stronger Pt-N3 bonding strength became, the better anti-tumor agents were.
