This study was conducted to investigate the effects of pine (Pinus densiflora) needle extracts on hepatic antioxidative system in rats fed high-cholesterol diet. Eight-week old Sprague Dawley rats were divided into four groups; normal diet group (CON), 0.5% cholesterol diet group (0.5% CHOL), 0.5% cholesterol diet and pine needle extracts prepared by using hot water group (HOT water), and 0.5% cholesterol diet and pine needle extracts prepared by using sub-supercritical $CO_2$ group (Sub-supercritical). The serum ALP, AST, and ALT activities were increased by 0.5% cholesterol diet supplementation, but treatment with pine needle extracts showed decrease compared with 0.5% CHOL group. The SOD activity in liver at 0.5% cholesterol diet group was more decreased than control group while Sub-supercritical group had significantly higher SOD activity than 0.5% CHOL group. Moreover, groups with pine needle extracts supplementation had higher level of GPx in liver than 0.5% cholesterol diet group. These results suggest that pine needle extracts increased antioxidative activities.
This study was performed to investigate the effects of green tea or antioxidant vitamins on lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzyme system in various regions of rat brain aged 9 and 12 months. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were raised on the experimental diets; 3% green tea powder diet, antioxidant vitamins diet containing the $\beta$-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E in the level same as in the 3% green tea powder diet, and control diet far 3 weeks. We measured concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA) and the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, and glutathione peroxide (GSH-Px) in various brain regions such as cortex, cerebellum, striatum, and hippocampus. Green tea powder or antioxidant vitamin supplementation decreased MDA concentrations in the striatum and the hippocampus, and increased SOB activities in the striatum, and GSH-Px activities in the cortex. There was no significant difference in the observed antioxidative effects between the green tea powder and antioxidant vitamin supplementation. A significant difference between 9 month- and 12 month-old rats was found in MDA concentrations and GSH-Px activities in all brain regions. These results suggest that green tea powder can have protective effects on various regions of rat brain and that these effects on lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzymes are different by age. In inhibiting lipid peroxidation, there was no difference between green tea powder and antioxidant vitamins.

To evaluate the antioxidative effect of rice coated with maengjong-juk extract in vivo system, rice coated with maengjong-juk extract diets were fed to NZW rabbit for 16 weeks and lipid peroxidation, protein oxidation, activities of antioxidative enzymes and total glutathione content in tissues were measured. TBARS contents in liver and spleen were significantly decreased in maengjong-juk extract diet group compared to control group, while those in kidney and heart tissue were not significantly different. Maengjong-juk extract diet suppressed the protein oxidation significantly in liver, spleen, kidney and heart tissues. Hepatic total SOD, Cu$.$Zn-SOD and Mn-SOD activities of maengjong-juk extract diets were significantly higher than those of control diet. GSH-Px and catalase activities of maengjong-juk extract diet were higher than those of control, while GR activities show no significant difference between the two groups. Total hepatic glutathione content was significantly increased by maengjong-juk extract diet. According to this study, many antioxidative materials and phytochemicals in maengjong-juk extracts seems to protect tissues from oxidative stress by stimulating antioxidative systems in atherosclerotic rabbit fed high cholesterol diet.

To evaluate the antioxidative and antiaging effects of buchu in vivo system, 2% or 5% buchu diets were fed to ICR mice for 13 months and lipid peroxidation, protein oxidation, activities of antioxidative enzymes and total glutathione content on liver were measured. Hepatic TBARS contents did not show differences among diet groups, while buchu diet suppressed the protein oxidation significantly. SOD activities of control diet group decreased slowly after 7 month but buchu diet increased its activities steeply for first 3 month and continued to increase twice or three times higher than control diet during 13 month. While GSH-Px activities of control diet group were increased slightly with age, buchu diet increased its activities twice or three times higher than control. While catalase activities of control diet group were almost not changed with age, buchu diet increased its activities in both 2% and 5% diet groups. Total hepatic glutathione contents were gradually increased with age, while buchu diets In-creased its contents remarkably. According to this study, many antioxidative materials and sulfides compounds containing buchu seems to protect antioxidative systems on ICR mice.

Red yeast rice (RYR) has been known to exhibit various biological effects, including anti-hyperlipidemia, antioxidant, anti-tumor, and anti-inflammtory activities. Oxidative stress is a main risk factor in the development of cardiovascular disease, such as atherosclerosis. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the possible hypolipidemic and antioxidant effect of RYR on rats fed a high-cholesterol diet supplemented with either 0.2%, 1%, or 5% RYR for 4 weeks. We measured lipid profiles in the plasma and liver, antioxidant enzyme activities in plasma and erythrocyte, gene expression of antioxidant enzymes in the liver, and oxidative DNA damage in lymphocytes. The group supplemented with 0.2% RYR had total cholesterol level in plasma decreased by 24%, while the group supplemented with 5% RYR had high-density cholesterol increased by 20% compared to the control. The antioxidant enzyme activities were also affected by RYR supplementation. Total superoxide dismutase activities in plasma significantly decreased by 11% in the 1% RYR group, while these activities in the liver significantly decreased by 16% and 21% in the 1% and 5% supplemented group compared to the control, respectively. Glutathione peroxidase activities in plasma and erythrocytes increased 13% and 48% in the 1% RYR group, respectively. Catalase (CAT) activity in erythrocytes significantly increased by 49% and 68% in the 1% and 5% RYR group compared to the control, respectively. The gene expression of CAT was up-regulated 7.9 fold compared to the control in the 5% RYR supplemented group. These results suggest that RYR can control hyperlipidemia by improving the lipid profile and modulating oxidative stress.
This study was conducted to measure the difference in the total antioxidant status(TAS) of overweight and normal weight adults, and to investigate the correlation between TAS and the nutrient intake. Anthropometric parameter, TAS, biochemical parameters and dietary intake were measured in the normal weight group(n=17, BMI 20-25, obesity index 90-110%, body fat 16-20%) and overweight group(n=13, BMI > 25, obesity index > 120%, body fat > 25%) among Korean young males. The TAS of the overweight group was significantly higher than that of the normal weight group(p < 0.01). Among biochemical parameters, the average uric acid concentration of the overweight group was significantly higher(p < 0.05) compared to that of the normal weight group indicating, the uric acid concentration reflects TAS. Usual dietary intake showed that the intakes of Ca and vitamin B$_2$, are below RDA. The average intake of vitamin C in the overweight group was significantly lower than that in the normal group(p < 0.05). There was no difference in the intake of carotene and vitamin E between groups. The diet quality of both groups was satisfactory. The result of the correlation analysis on TAS, the uric acid concentration, and the measured indexs are as follows : In the overweight group, TAS was negatively correlated with alchol drinking, and uric acid concentration was positively correlated with BMI, obesity index, and TAS. In conclusion, TAS was significantly higher in the overweight group than that of the normal group, although no association was found with nutrient intakes. Serum uric acid showed a positive relationship with TAS indicating, it is a possible determinant of the antioxidant capacity.
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of Salvia Plebia R. Br. (SP) powder on the antioxidative defense system and oxidative stress in rats which were fed a high fat high cholesterol diet. Accordingly, the rats were divided into four experimental groups which were composed of a high fat high cholesterol diet group (HF), HF diet with 5% SP powder supplemented group (PA), a HF diet with 10% SP powder supplemented group (PB), and a normal group (N). Consequently, the hepatic catalase activity of the HF group was decreased compared to the normal group (N), but it is recorded that of the PA and PB groups were significantly increased. With this in mind, the PA and PB groups resulted in the case of significantly increased activities of hepatic GSH-px and SOD. The hepatic superoxide radical and hydrogen peroxide contents of the PA and PB groups were significantly decreased, as compared to the HF group. The GOT and GPT activities of the PB group were also significantly decreased when thus compared to the HF group. Notably, the carbonyl values contents of the PA and PB groups were significantly reduced compared to the HF group. The hepatic TBARS values in the liver were significantly reduced as measured in the PA and PB groups. These results suggest that the SP powder may reduce the incidence of oxidative damage, by the activation of an antioxidative enzyme in rats fed with high fat high cholesterol diets.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between antioxidant food intake pattern and asthma control status in Korean adolescents. This study was conducted using data from 1,578 patients diagnosed with asthma among the participants in the 11th online health behavior survey. Statistical analyses were performed for sociodemographic variables, known risk factors for asthma worsening, and all variables which were related to food intake pattern. For final decision, logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the associations between antioxidant food intake and asthma worsening. Male gender and smoking experiences were associated with asthma exacerbation. Low intake of antioxidant foods status also significantly increased asthma exacerbations. Antioxidant food intake and smoking prevention education is important for adolescent asthma patients. It is highly needed to recommend taking fruits and vegetables properly.
This study was attempted to investigate the effects of Duchesnea chrysantha (DC) on antioxidative activities by in vivo. Rats were divided into four experimental groups which are composed of normal diet group (N group), high fat high cholesterol diet group (HF group), high fat high cholesterol diet with 5% DC powder supplemented group (DA group) and high fat high cholesterol diet with 10% DC powder supplemented group (DB group). Supplementation of DC powder groups resulted in increased activities of hepatic glutathione peroxidase and catalase. The microsomal superoxide radical contents of the DA and DB groups were significantly reduced compared to the high fat high cholesterol diet group. The mitochondrial superoxide radical contents of the DB group were significantly reduced compared to the high fat high cholesterol diet group. Hepatic hydrogen peroxide contents in cytosol were significantly reduced 5% and 10% DC powder supplemented group. The carbonyl values contents in mitochondria and microsome of the DA and DB groups were significantly reduced compared to the HF group. Thiobarbituric acid reaction substance (TBARS) values in liver were reduced in 10% DC powder supplemented group compared to the HF group. These results suggest that DC powder may have a strong regulatory effect in the activation of the antioxidative defense system.
