  • In this study, the causes of the boom in the container shipping industry pointed out by the media were analyzed. As a result of the analysis, it was found that on the supply side, shipping companies mooring ships in response to IMO environmental regulations caused a rise in freight rates due to 'ships that could not be operated' even if demand increased. In terms of demand, it was determined that the claim that social distancing promoted purchases and increased demand was somewhat unfounded. The reason is that the relationship between social distancing and rising fares is weak.

  • This study examines the interrelationship between coastal passenger demand and fares for 101 coastal passenger routes in Korea during the 2018 to 2022 period. The two-stage least squares method through a panel data simultaneous equations model was estimated to the effects of individual route characteristics and regional characteristics on the performance and fares of coastal passenger transportation. The estimated results indicate that the endogenous variable, fare, and the exogenous variables, route characteristics, route distance, and the instrumental variable, frequency, affect the demand for coastal passengers. In the short-run pricing function, the exogenous variables, capacity, speed, and route distance, as well as the endogenous variable, coastal passenger transportation performance, affect the coastal passenger fare. This study is expected to provide useful implications for domestic coastal passenger demand and pricing in relation to coastal passengers.

  • This study clarified a complicated cause-and-effect relationship about the manpower utilization of container terminals. This paper conducted confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling using 5 factors: technology development, safety and security change, external environment, terminal operation, and organizational culture that have been derived in the first study(2021). The results imply that technology development and external environment have a direct effect while terminal operation and safety and security change have indirect effect on a manpower utilization of container terminals. Based on these results, this paper may provide various policy implications for port operators, developers, and managers.

  • Organizational culture represents values and beliefs that members share and is a factor that influences the behavior of organizational members. Understanding organizational culture is a source of competitive advantage to increase the rate of success and efficient management of the organization. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between job satisfaction and the turnover intention of sailors. To achieve its purpose, the study was developed by examining the properties to be used for the demonstration and the purpose of the study, and verifying the hypothesis through empirical analysis. Empirical analysis showed that developmental, rational, and group cultures among organizational culture have a significant impact on job satisfaction. When the organizational culture has a group culture and an extrinsic factor to job satisfaction, it has a negative effect on turnover intention. This implies that the shipping company needs to foster organizational culture to feel like growing for Sailors themselves and to improve relationship and cooperation with other sailors rather than trying to control strongly. The shipping company will need to educate members and manage its organizational culture consistently for improving the organizational culture.

  • Since Modigliani and Miller developed their theory of capital structure in 1958, it has become one of the most debated issues in corporate management. This is because the capital structure decision necessarily affects financial risk and the firm's value. Throughout the research, one of the most concerning problems is determining what factors influence the firm's capital structure. Since Korean shipping firms have been suffering from a long term economic recession, an optimal capital structure has become increasingly critical to survive in the shipping industry. This paper studies panel data on 46 Korean shipping companies since 2000 to find the factors that affect capital structure. The results suggest that a negative relationship arises between firm size, tangible assets, profitability and non-debt tax shields against leverage. Otherwise, it proved that growth opportunity has a positive relationship with the firm's leverage. In the research model during a booming shipping economy, growth opportunity and non-debt tax shield are not associated with firm's capital structure.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of exchange rate volatility on Trading Volume of Container of Korea, and to induce policy implication in the contex of GARCH and regression model. In order to test whether time series data is stationary and the model is fitness or not, we put in operation unit root test, cointegration test. And we apply impulse response functions and variance decomposition to the structural model to estimate dynamic short run behavior of variables. The major empirical results of the study show that the increase in exchange rate volatility exerts a significant negative effect on Trading Volume of Container in long run. The results Granger causality based on an error correction model indicate that uni-directional causality between trading volume of container and exchange rate volatility is detected. This study applies impulse response function and variance decompositions to get additional information regarding the Trading Volume of Container to shocks in exchange rate volatility. The results indicate that the impact of exchange rate volatility on Trading Volume of Container is negative and converges on a stable negative equilibrium in short-run. Th exchange rate volatility have a large impact on variance of Trading Volume of Container, the effect of exchange rate volatility is small in very short run but become larger with time. We can infer policy suggestion as follows; we must make a stable policy of exchange rate to get more Trading Volume of Container

  • Earnings management is defined as an intentional act during the financial reporting process or a manager's choice of accounting policies to avoid earnings decreases or obtain some private gains. Shipping firms have a highly debt-intensive capital structure and a significant motivation in earnings management to avoid failure of a Debt Covenant. From this point of views, this paper tries to determine the relationship between the capital structure and discretionary accruals estimated using the re-modified Jones model (1995). The sample used to test the research models is made up of 87 Korean shipping firms during the period from 2007 to 2015. A histogram analysis, t-test and FGLS confirm the possibility of using earnings management, and it proved that Korean shipping firms manage their earnings to avoid financial loss. An analysis of the relationship between the capital structure and earning managements, shows it is difficult to support the Debt Covenant, shown as a negative relationship between the debt ratio and debt maturity as shipping firms' capital structure and discretionary accruals as earning management variable. An additional analysis presents a negative relationship between previous debt maturity and discretionary accruals, and the possibility of earning management in a highly increased debt ration group.

  • The purpose of this study is to use the EGARCH model and Granger causality test to analyze how the change in the BDI affects the Korean stock price volatility. The main analysis results are summarized as follows. First, according to the results of the mean equation, the change in the BDI is significant in large-cap stocks, as well as in the manufacturing, service, and chemistry indexes, but not in others. This implies that the Korean stock market does not respond appropriately to the maritime market situation; further, the increase in demand for raw materials has not led to a real economic recovery. Second, in the result of the variance equation, the coefficient on the change in the BDI is negative(-), and the change in the BDI is significant for all size indexes. Particularly, the change in the BDI has a greater impact on the volatility of small-cap stocks than that of large-cap stocks. The results of the analysis of the sector indexes were statistically significant for the service, financial, construction, and electric and electronics industries, but not for the manufacturing and chemical industries. In particular, the changes in the BDI have the greatest impact on the construction industry. Third, according to the Granger causality test results, the change in the BDI leads the financial industry and construction industry. There is, however, no relationship between the BDI and the other indexes. This shows that change in the shipping freight index can be used to predict the volatility in the Korean stock market. This can help investors and policymakers make better decisions.

  • In order to address the crisis of the regional employment structure caused by the recent restructuring of the shipbuilding industry, this study estimates the shipbuilding industry's Employment Linkage Effect(ELE) across regions and industries. Consequently, the study uses the hypothetical extraction method on the shipbuilding industry from the 2013 Regional Input-output Table. The analysis results are as follows. First, the shipbuilding industry's ELE across industries is estimated at its highest in wholesale and retail, followed by shipment, other manufacturing, project supporting service, machine and equipment manufacturing, and metal product manufacturing. These industries either have a high employment to GDP ratio or are directly related to the shipbuilding industry in terms of production activities. Second, the Southeastern Korea's ELE on South Jeolla Province is very low, and, accordingly, South Jeolla Province is isolated in the employment structure of the shipbuilding industry. Therefore, when the government establishes measures to tackle the crisis of employment caused by the shipbuilding industry's restructuring, it should prioritize identifying such regional employment structures, as demonstrated above, and incorporate them into the regional industry policy.
