  • This paper documents the development of a bi-objective(minimizing delays and Queue lengths) cycle-free signal timing length model using Genetic Algorithm. The model was embodied using MATLAB. the language of technical computing. A special feature of this model is its ability to concurrently manage delays and queue lengths of turning movement concurrently. The model produces a cycle-free signal timing(cycles and green times) for each intersection on the cycle basis. Appropriate offsets could be also accomplished by applying cycle-free based signal timings for respective intersections. The model was applied to an example network which consists of four intersections. The result shows that the model produces superior signal timings to the existing signal timing model in terms of managing delays and queue lengths of turning movements.

  • A series of one-dimensional cylinder sedimentation test, seepage consolidation test and two-dimensional deposition model test were conducted to examine the characteristics of deposition and volume change of dredged soils containing the high water content, and these experimental results were compared with the sedimentary conditions of actual dredged-reclaimed fields to obtain the relations of a volume change by settling what is required for design. In addition, the change of water content and the distribution of fine grained soils after sedimentation were investigated. Thus, it was concluded that deposition height increased lineary as substantial soil volume increased, and also the elevation of interface increasea proportionately at both the starting time and the finishing time of virtual self-weight consolidation in one-dimensional sedimentation. Furthermore, the two-dimensional model test results were shown to describe the plain distribution of water content and fine grained silt where dredged soil was deposited by two dimensional flowing, and the water content was distributed to wide range from the minimum water content 30% to maximum 180% according to the passed amount of №200 sieve percentage.

  • A reliability analysis of the fatigue failure of highway steel bridges was performed by applying the Miner's fatigue damage rule for the fatigue design truck proposed for the LRFD code and for the current DB 24 truck. The limit state function for fatigue failure is expressed as a function of various random variables that affect fatigue damage. Among these variables, the statistical parameters for the equivalent moment, the impact factor, and the loadometer were obtained by analyzing recently measured domestic traffic data, and the parameters for the fatigue strength, the girder distribution factor, and the headway factor were obtained from the measured data reported in literature. Based on the reliability analysis, the fatigue truck model for the LRFD code was proposed. After applying the proposed fatigue truck to the LRFD code, 16 composite plate and box girder bridges were designed based on the LRFD method, and the LRFD design results for the fatigue limit state were compared with those by the current KHBDC.

  • The paper investigates the limit state of deflection for short and medium span steel girder bridges. Deflection depends on stiffness of steel girders and integrity of the reinforced concrete slab (composite action). Load and resistance parameters are treated as random variables. A probabilistic model is developed for prediction of the deflection. The structural performance can be affected by deterioration of components, in particular corrosion of steel girders. In addition, the creep of concrete can greatly influence the deflection of composite structures. Therefore, the statistical models for creep and corrosion of structural steel are incorporated in the model. Structures designed according to the AASHTO LRFD Code are considered. Load and resistance models are developed to account for time-variability of the parameters. Monte Carlo simulations are used to estimate the deflections and probabilities of serviceability failure. Different span lengths and girder spacing are considered for structures designed as moment-controlled and deflection-controlled. A summary of obtained results is presented.

  • When the rubber vulcanizates reinforced with carbon black or silica are subjected to cyclic loading from its virgin state, the stress required on reloading is less than that on the initial loading. This stress softening phenomenon is referred to as the Mullins effect. The strain energy function of rubber vulcanizates was investigated using theory of pseudo-elasticity incorporated damage parameter that Ogden and Roxburgh have proposed to describe the damage-induced stress softening effect in rubber-like solids. The quasi-static cyclic loading test was performed using the NR-SBR vulcanizates reinforced with carbon black, and then the effect of a damage parameter to stress-strain curve in reloading and subsequent reloading paths was studied. The strain energy function of the rubber vulcanizates with a different filler content was also evaluated.

  • Nowadays, geosynthetics for reinforcement and protection are widely applied to the waste landfill site. Current research indicates the potential for progressive failure in geosynthetic-soil system depends on the interface shear strength governed by several intrinsic factors such as moisture, normal stress, chemical, etc. In particular, the effect of the acidity and basicity from the leachate is intensively reviewed to assess the chemical reaction mechanism of interface shear strength under the cyclic loading condition. New multi-purpose interface apparatus(M-PIA) has been manufactured and the cyclic direct shear tests using submerged geosynthetics and soils under the different chemical conditions have been performed, consequently, the thickness of interface and shear stress degradation are verified. The basic schematic of the Disturbed State Concept(DSC) is employed to estimate the shear stress degradation in the interface, then, normalized disturbed function is obtained and analyzed to describe the shear stress degradation of geosynthetic-soil interface with chemical influence factors under dynamic condition.

  • This paper proposes an automatic facial expression generation system of vector graphic character using gaussian process model. Proposed method extracts the main feature vectors from twenty-six facial data of character redefined based on Russell's internal emotion state. Also by using new gaussian process model, SGPLVM, we find low-dimensional feature data from extracted high-dimensional feature vectors, and learn probability distribution function (PDF). All parameters of PDF are estimated by maximization the likelihood of learned expression data, and these are used to select wanted facial expressions on two-dimensional space in real time. As a result of simulation, we confirm that proposed facial expression generation tool is working in the small facial expression datasets and can generate various facial expressions without prior knowledge about relation between facial expression and emotion.

  • In this paper, we propose a automated techniques for generating the gait animation of humanoid character model required in game applications. The proposed method can generate motion data of various styles with intuitive manipulation, and techniques for editing motion data are also proposed. In addition, we introduce an automated tool for gait animation of character model developed with the proposed method to verify the effectiveness of our method. The proposed method tan be successfully employed in motion authoring tools. In this paper, only the gait animation was considered. However, the proposed method can be applied to various motions and can be utilized as a motion engine that automatically generates proper motion according to the state of the character. The motion engine can express various behavior of the character without requiring motion data base which is usually employed in 3D online games.

  • Understanding of the phase distribution in a multi-phase polycrystalline material is important because it can affect material properties and mechanical behaviors significantly. In this research, probability functions (two-point correlation and lineal-path functions) are used to represent the phase distributions of microstructures. The two-phase microstructures with random phase distribution are reconstructed using probability functions and compared with original samples. Mechanical behaviors of the virtual samples for different directions are evaluated using a finite element method. It is confirmed that microstructures with the same statistical characteristics can be generated using the reconstruction method. It is also demonstrated that the characteristics of the probability functions and mechanical reponses between the original and reconstructed microsturctures are statistically identical.

  • The plasmon behaviors in a superlattice of $GaAs/Al_xGa_{1-x}As$ multiple quantum wells with a half-parabolic confining potential due to different dielectric interfaces are studied under magnetic and electric fields perpendicular and parallel to the superlattice axis by using a previously published theoretical framework. From the density-density correlation functions by considering the intrasubband and the inter-subband transitions under the random phase approximation, we calculate the dispersion energies of the surface and the bulk states as functions of the composition of the multiple quantum well structure and of the magnetic field strength and the average electric field strength over the quantum well. The Raman intensities for various magnetic field strengths and average electric field strengths over the quantum well are also obtained as a function of the energy of the incoming light for these states.
