  • For the practical application on SCFCL, Bi2212 tubes were fabricated by Centrifugal Forming Process (CFP) in terms of many different processing parameters. Typical sizes of tubes were 60, 150 mm in length and 2.5, 3.5, 4.8 mm in thickness. Initially powder was melted by induction heating. The optimum range of melting temperatures and preheating temperature were $1100^{\circ}C$ and $500^{\circ}C$ for 30min respectively. The nominal mold rotating speed was around 1000 RPM. A tube was annealed at $840^{\circ}C$ for 80 hours in oxygen atmosphere. The tube of 50mm x 70mm x 2.5mm, rotated with 1000 RPM showed $I_c=890\;A\;and\;T_c=80$. It was found that the tube processed with faster rate of mold rotation speed, thinner tube thickness and shorter tube length shows better electric characteristics as compared with the tube normally processed. In order to study the uniformity heat and fluid flow analysis tool was adopted along tube.

  • Fault current limiters (FCL) are extensively needed to suppress fault currents, especially for trunk power systems heavily connected to high voltage/large current transmission lines. Due to its ideal electrical behavior, high-temperature superconductor fault current limiter (HTSFCL) becomes one of the most important developing trends of limiters in power system. This paper describes the result of an investigation of the dielectric characteristics of turn-to-turn insulation for pancake and solenoid type reactor coil in liquid nitrogen. The influence of thickness in a variety length, on AC, DC and impulse surface flashover has been investigated. Also, the relationships between the number of turn and breakdown characteristics were clarified. The information gathered in this test series should be helpful in the design of liquid nitrogen filled DC reactor type HTSFCL.

  • For the application of superconducting fault current limiters(SFCLs) to the protection system, quench recovery characteristics of Au/YBCO thin film were investigated. The Au/YBCO thin film was designed as a SFCL element with a bi-spiral pattern. The SFCL element limited the fault current successfully. For the analysis of the recovery to superconducting state, we measured resistance variation of the SFCL element after the quench. In addition, in order to investigate the dependence of quench characteristics of SFCL on the $LN_2$ cooling condition, we measured the recovery time under a pressure of 1, 2 and 3 atm. As the results, the recovery time increased in proportion to the duration of the fault currents. In the sub-cooled condition, while the quench development was exactly the same, the recovery time was shortened as the pressure increased.

  • The characteristics and fluctuations of structures and spatial distributions of thermal fronts and warm eddy in the Southeastern part of the East sea are discussed based on the data collected by the Naval Academy, Korea during Feb. 6-9, May 9-19 and Oct. 12-18, 1995. The thermal fronts existed very often at the sea off the Pohang-Ulsan, The generation of the thermal front is related with the development of the North Korea Cold Current. The warm eddy is located in the central part of the Ulleung basin where the local depth exceeds 1500m. This warm eddy is a major contributor to mass transport in the northern part of the East Sea. It is evident that knowledge of warm eddy is important in understanding the circulation in the western part of the East Sea.

  • We experiment to analyze on current limiting and recovery characteristics of trigger type SFCL as the composition of the contact. Generally, some superconductor of SFCL is relatively largely loaded due to limit the fault current by oneself and recovery time is affected until the fault cleared. However, in the fault, the proposal trigger type SFCL transfer the fault current to current limiting reactor(CLR) using power switch so it could reduce the recovery time and load of the superconductor. However, because of applying the additional power switches, that could generate some power loss. Therefore, to solve this problem, we proposed the composition method of the double contact for a trigger type SFCL and analyzed on current limiting and recovery characteristics for ones.

  • we analyzed the electromagnetic behavior of a superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) under the quench state using FEM. The analysis model used in this work is 5.5 KVA meander-line type SFCLs. Meshes of 3,650 triangular elements were used in the analysis of this SFCL. Analysis results showed that the distribution of current density was concentrated to inner curved line in meander-line type-SFCL and the maximum current density was 14.61 $A/m^2$ and also the maximum Joule heat was 2,030 $W/m^2$ in this region. We think that the new and the modified structure must be considered for an uniform distribution of the electromagnetic field.

  • We fabricated a resistive superconducting fault current limiter of two stripe meander type based on a YBCO film, and performed current limitation experiments. In order to disperse the heat generated at hot spots in the YBCO film the film was coated with a gold shunt layer. At $0^{\circ}$ fault angle the minimum quench current was $9.6 A_{peak}$(meander line cross section: $5{\times}10^{-6}cm^2$) and the fast quench time was 0.63 msec. The resistance of the limiter continued to increase for three cycles due to heat generation in the gold layer and was stabilized afterwards. At $45^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ the fast quench time were 0.56 msec and 0.26 msec, respectively. The quench time is believed to be reduced because faults occurred when the current was increasing or was at the peak value. With the limiter we could effectively limit the fault current about 1/5 times right after the fault and about 1/8.5 times three cycles after.

  • We fabricated resistive superconducting fault current limiters (SFCL) based on YBCO thin films grown on 2-inch diameter $Al_2O_3$ substrates. Two SFCLs with nearly identical properties were connected in series to investigate simultaneous quench. There was a slight difference in the rate of voltage increase between two SFCL units when they were operated independently. This difference resulted in significantly imbalanced power dissipation between the units. This imbalance was removed by connecting a shunt resister to an SFCL in parallel. The appropriate values of shunt resistance were 80 ${\Omega}$ at 75 $V_rms$ and 110 ${\Omega}$ at 120 $V_rms$, respectively. Increased power input at high voltages also reduced the initial imbalance in power dissipation, but with increase in film temperature to higher than 200 K.

  • We analysed the operating properties of resistive type superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs) based on YBCO thin films with a single line-to-ground fault. When a single line-to-ground fault occurred, the short circuit current of a fault phase increased up to about 6 times of transport currents immediately after the fault instant and was effectively limited to the designed current level within 2 ms by the resistance development of the SFCL. The fault currents of the sound phases almost did not change because of their direct grounding system. The unsymmetrical rates of a fault phase were distributed from 6.4 to 1.4. It was found that the unsymmetrical rates of currents were noticeably improved within one cycle after the fault instant. We calculated the zero phase currents for a single line-to-ground fault using the symmetrical component analysis. The positive sequence resistance was reduced remarkably right after the fault but eventually approached the balanced positive resistance component prior to the system fault. This means that the system reaches almost the three-phase symmetrical state in about 60 ㎳ after the fault. The ground currents were almost 3 times of the zero phase mts since most of the fault currents flowed through the grounding line.

  • Fault current in power system is expected to increase by demand of power capacity. Therefore, when the fault occurred, fault current was increased in the power system. Many studies have been progressed to limit the fault current. Superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is one of them which has been studied in worldwide. In this paper, we will analyze characteristics of a transformer-type SFCL by reclosing operation when the voltage increases. Twice opening times in the reclosing of circuit breaker were set as the 0.5 and 15 seconds, respectively. Turn's number of primary and secondary coils set 4:2 and we increased voltages from 120V to 280V for each experiment. By the current waveform, maximum fault current in second and third cycles was lowered when the voltage was increased. In the recovery waveform, recovery time was increased as the voltage was increased. The reason was that power burden of the SFCL increased when consumption power was increased, so the time to get back to SFCL took longer. We compared the characteristics of a resistive-type and transformer-type SFCL. As a result, we found that the fault current of a transformer-type was lower than resistive-type and recovery time of the SFCL was shorter. Consequently, transformer-type SFCL was more profitable for limitation of fault current and recovery time under the same condition for reclosing operation.
