  • The syntactic pattern recognition system of Korean characters is composed of three main functional parts; Preprocessing, Graph-representation, and Segmentation. In preprocessing routine, the input pattern has been thinned using the Hilditch's thinning algorithm. The graph-representation is the detection of a number of nodes over the input pattern and codification of branches between nodes by 8 directional components. Next, segmentation routine which has been implemented by top down nondeterministic parsing under the control of tree grammar identifies parts of the graph-represented Pattern as basic components of Korean characters. The authors have made sure that this system is effective for recognizing Korean characters through the recognition simulations by digital computer.

  • This paper attempts to analyize struture of the Letters for the Purpose of makin grecognition of Han-Gelul printed and described the method of recogniton and design of the optimum system. For the reason of the Consistency of Han-Geul (korean letters) combined with Consonants and vouels, the number of the words used in the daily living is about 2,000words. for this reason the composition of the recognition system is complicated, and therfore, this paper is pursued to recearch to handle the separate way ineach form of Letter between consonant and vouel. and the further description of this paper also indicates us the many parts of savings of elements when the character is extracted as logic system in letter composition.

  • In this paper, the functional propertied of vibrotactile sense of skin were studied by means of psycophysical experiments with respect to frequency and waveform of mechanical vibration, two-point threshold, contactor size of stimulators. Furthermore, leased on the experimental result, a small vibrotactile stimulator made of piezoelectrc ireed vibrator array was proposed for a aid blind to recognition of the Korean letters. A tactile output image is presented by an 8 row$\times$1 column array of samall vibrator reeds with 200 Hz rectangular wave, the array fitting on a fore-finger. Under the control of the NOVA mini-computer, the bimorph reeds array could represent any of one of the 24 characters of the Korean vowel and consonant at the 8 positions from left to right on the array. Without learning effect, the identification test of the Korean characters by the designed experimental system was carried out. The average rate of correct response was 90%.

  • Virtual Hangul keyboards like Chun-Ji-In, Narat-Gul, and QWERTY are based on eyesight recognition, in which input letter positions are fixed in the smartphone environment. The input method of a fixed-position style is not very convenient for visually impaired individuals. In order to resolve the issue of inconvenience of the Hangul input system, we propose a new paradigm of the finger-touch based Hangul input system that does not need eyesight recognition of input buttons. For the convenience of learning the touch-motion based keyboard, finger touches are designed by considering the shape and frequencies of Hangul vowels and consonants together with the preference of fingers. The base position is decided by the first touch of the screen, and the finger-touch keyboard is used in the same way for all the other touch-style devices, regardless of the differences in size and operation system. In this input method, unique finger-touch motions are assigned for Hangul letters that significantly reduce the input errors.

  • The visual span refers to the number of letters that can be accurately recognized without moving one's eyes. The size of the visual span is affected by sensory factors such as perimetric complexity, crowding, and mislocation of letters. Korean Hangul utilizes rather unique alphabetic-syllabary writing system, quite different from English and Chinese writing systems. Due to this combinatorial nature of the script, the visual span for Hangul characters can also be affected by the letter type (e.g., CV vs CVCC). The present study examined the effect of syllable complexity on the visual span for Hangul by comparing letter recognition accuracy across four letter type conditions (C only, CV, CVC, and CVCC). We also aimed to determine the meaningful letter type(s) that is associated with differences in reading abilities in Korean. Using a trigram presentation method, we found that overall recognition accuracy declined as syllable complexity increased. However, the visual span for CVC type was greater than that for CV type, suggesting that the effect is not necessarily linear, and that there might be other factors affecting the visual span for these types of letters. C and CV type showed fairly strong positive correlations with reading comprehension, suggesting that these might be the meaningful units for measuring visual span in relating to reading abilities.

  • The standards of a telephone Hangul keyboard should be decided in terms of objective factors : the number of strokes and fingers’moving distance. A number of designers will agree on them, because these factors can be calculated in an objective manner. So, We developed the model which can evaluate the efficiency of inputting Hangul on a telephone keyboard in terms of two factors. As compared with other models, the major features of this model are as follows : in order to evaluate the efficiency of Hangul input on a telephone keyboard, (1) this model calculated not a typing time but the number of strokes ; (2) concurrence frequency that had been counted on KOREA-1 Corpus was used directly ; (3) a total set of 67 consonants and vowels was used ; and (4) this model could evaluate a number of keyboards that use a kind of syllabic function key-the complete key, the null key and the final consonant key and also calculate a lot of keyboards that adopt no syllabic function key. However, there are many other factors to judge the efficiency of inputting Hangul on a telephone keyboard. If we want to make more accurate estimate of a telephone Hangul keyboard, we must consider both logical data and experimental data as well.

  • This study focuses on a review of Hangeul orthography guidelines in Korean language regulations. It is indispensable to revise the guidelines thoroughly because it has been more than 80 years since a unified plan of Korean orthography was established in 1933, which the current orthography is based on. Also, it has been approximately 30 years since 1989, when the current guidelines were issued and promulgated. The viewpoint towards this review reflects the requirements by education fields of Korean as a foreign language and modern Korean users. Hangeul orthography consists of six clauses, along with an appendix regarding punctuation marks: 1) general rules, 2) consonants and vowels, 3) related to sounds, 4) about forms, 5) spacing between words, and 6) miscellaneous. This paper examined individual clauses and specific usages of the clauses, in terms of Korean as a foreign language. Based on the review, this paper suggests the following tasks in order to establish a draft of Hangeul orthography for foreigners. A. Among the individual clauses, some clauses that embody vocabulary education aspects should be addressed in a Korean dictionary, and deleted in Hangeul orthography guidelines. B. The clauses of Hangeul orthography guidelines should be edited for revision and substitution where necessary. C. The usage of individual clauses should be replaced with more appropriate examples aligned with everyday conversation. D. In order to establish 'Hangeul orthography for foreigners', linguists should continuously review several chapters and the appendix of Hangeul orthography, such as components about forms, spacing between words, miscellaneous, and punctuation marks. The purpose of this review is to pursue the simplicity of Hangeul orthography guidelines and the practicality in terms of reflecting more realistic examples. This review contributes to facilitate Korean language usage not only for non-native learners, but also native users.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the causal relationship of kindergarteners' alphabet knowledge to their ability to read words, in connection with the features of the Korean alphabet 'Hangul'. A total of 289 children aged four to six from three kindergartens in Busan participated in the study. The main results are as follows. To begin with, the participants showed continuous development in the knowledge of consonant names, vowel sounds, the vowel stroke-adding principle, and the alphabet composition principle. Meanwhile, discontinuous development was found in the knowledge of consonant sounds and the consonant stroke-adding principle, which indicated that kindergartners could show differential speed in various sub-skills of literacy development. The kindergartners' naming of consonants developed before their recall of consonant sounds, and the knowledge of consonant sounds had an effect on the knowledge of vowel sounds. Children had difficulty in treating more complicated letters of the alphabet stroke-adding principle test, and eve syllables of the alphabet composition principle test. Most importantly, the children's alphabet knowledge was strongly related to their ability to read words written in Hangul, as kindergarteners with a greater knowledge of alphabet names, sounds, and principles were shown to read words better.
