  • In this study, we used the CLUE-s model to predict the future land-use change based on the urban growth scenario in South Korea. The land-use maps of six classes (water, urban, rice paddy, upland crop, forest, and grass) for the year 2008 were obtained from the Ministry of Environment (MOE), and the land-use data for 5-year intervals between 1980 and 2010 were obtained from the Water Resources Management Information System (WAMIS), South Korea. For predicting the future land-use change, the MOE environmental conservation value assessment map (ECVAM) was considered for identifying the development-restricted areas, and various driving factors as location characteristics were prepared for the model. The predicted results were verified by comparing them with the land-use statistics of urban areas in each province for the year 2008. The prediction error rates were 9.47% in Gyeonggi, 9.96% in Gangwon, 10.63% in Chungbuk, 7.53% in Chungnam, 9.48% in Jeonbuk, 6.92% in Jeonnam, 2.50% in Gyeongbuk, and 8.09% in Gyeongnam. The sources of error might come from the gaps between the development of political decisions in reality with spatio-temporal variation and the mathematical model for urban growth rate in CLUE-s model for future scenarios. Based on the land-use scenario in 2008, the land-use predictions for the year 2100 showed that the urban area increased by 28.24%, and the rice paddy, upland crop, and forest areas decreased by 8.27, 6.72, and 1.66%, respectively, in South Korea.

  • The batch experiments and response surface methodology (RSM) have been applied to the investigation of the cadmium (Cd) adsorption by coal fly ash (CFA). CFA having maximum Cd removal mass of 8.51 mg/g were calculated from Langmuir model. Cd removal reaction with different initial pH ranged from 4 to 9. When the initial pH was higher, Cd was removed more by adsorption and precipitation. These results suggest that the lower pH cause an increase of $H^+$ ion concentration which competed with Cd ions for exchange sites in CFA. Also, The Cd adsorption was mathematically described as a function of parameters initial Cd concentration ($X_1$), initial pH ($X_2$), and initial CFA mass ($X_3$) being modeled by use of the Box-Behnken methods. Empirical models were developed to describe relationship between the experimental variables and response. Statistical analysis indicates that tree factors ($X_1$, $X_2$, and $X_3$) on the linear term (main effects), and tree factors ($X_1X_2$, $X_1X_3$, and $X_2X_3$) on the non-linear term (Interaction effect; cross-product) had significant effects, respectively. In this case, the value of the adjusted determination coefficient (adjusted $R^2=0.9280$) was closed to 1, showing a high significance of the model. Statistical results showed the order of Cd removal at experimental factors to be initial initial pH > initial Cd concentration > initial CFA mass.

  • This study examined the differences of academic achievement by social status types through sociometry. This study analyzed 201 students in grade 6 in S elementary school. The social status is classified by 7 (popular, average, rejected, aggressive-rejected, submissive-rejected, neglected, controversial) with academic achievement of each type as dependent variables to figure out the relation between social status types and academic achievement. To classify 5 social status types, a sociometry program developed by Ahn, Ie-Hwan (2007) was used, 2 social status types was classified with experimental condition, and its dependent variable was the score by subjects in the mid-term exam of the 1st semester in 2011. The average values of humanities courses (Korean and social studies) and natural science courses (math and science) were compared by both sexes and 7 social status types. The reference group was average group. As a result, as to male students, N type had the highest score both in humanities courses and natural science courses while C type had the lowest score in both groups. As to female students, P, N, C types had the highest score in both groups with similar range while R type had the lowest score in both groups. This result demonstrates that the academic achievement of students had relatively high relevance with social status. and also, suggestion that how teachers can do to enhance the academic achievement of elementary school students.

  • The successional status and potential natural vegetation were examined in a mixed broadleaved-Abies forest located at Mt, Odae National Park. The examination was based on the subsequent process of generation replacement by understory saplings for the dominant canopy trees within 88 $5m{\times}50m$ belt transects. The transition matrix model, which was modified from mathematical theory of Markov chain, was employed to analyze the successional status of the study forest. The model suggests that the study forest is still seral, and it is considered to be more than 700 years away from the steady state or climax in terms of species composition. The simulations predict a remarkable decrease in the proportion of species composition of the present dominant Quercus mongolica and Tilia amurensi.s from current 28% and 13% to less than 3% and 5%, respectively, at the steady state. On the contrary, the proportions of Abies holophylla, Acer pseudo-sieboldianum, Carpinus cordata, and Pinus koraiensis will increase at the steady state. The ratio of mixture between deciduous and coniferous trees will be gradually changed from current 6.5 : 3.5 to 5.0 : 5.0 at equilibrium. Discussion for the problems of Quercus mongolica in successional status noted that the species behaved as a mid-successional dominant, not a climax species in the study forest. The hypothesis and sensitivity of the transition matrix model were also discussed to evaluate the applicability to the real situation. The overall results indicated that the present dynamics of the forest must reflect the seral state due to previous disturbance mainly by hyman related interference.

  • An expected-discounted cost model based on RRP(Renewal Reward Process), referred to as a stochastic decision model, has been developed to estimate the optimal period of in-depth inspection which is one of critical issues in the life-cycle maintenance management of harbor structures such as rubble-mound breakwaters. A mathematical model, which is a function of the probability distribution of the service-life, has been formulated by simultaneously adopting PIM(Periodic Inspection and Maintenance) and CBIM(Condition-Based Inspection and Maintenance) policies so as to resolve limitations of other models, also all the costs in the model associated with monitoring and repair have been discounted with time. From both an analytical solution derived in this paper under the condition in which a failure rate function is a constant and the sensitivity analyses for the variety of different distribution functions and conditions, it has been confirmed that the present solution is more versatile than the existing solution suggested in a very simplified setting. Additionally, even in that case which the probability distribution of the service-life is estimated through the stochastic process, the present model is of course also well suited to interpret the nonlinearity of deterioration process. In particular, a MCS(Monte-Carlo Simulation)-based sample path method has been used to evaluate the parameters of a damage intensity function in stochastic process. Finally, the present stochastic decision model can satisfactorily be applied to armor units of rubble mound breakwaters. The optimal periods of in-depth inspection of rubble-mound breakwaters can be determined by minimizing the expected total cost rate with respect to the behavioral feature of damage process, the level of serviceability limit, and the consequence of that structure.

  • This study is to investigate how much highschool students, who have learned functional concepts included in the Middle school math curriculum, understand chapters of the function, to analyze the types of errors which they made in solving the mathematical problems and to look for the proper instructional program to prevent or minimize those ones. On the basis of the result of the above examination, it suggests a classification model for teaching-learning methods and teaching material development The result of this study is as follows. First, Students didn't fully understand the fundamental concept of function and they had tendency to approach the mathematical problems relying on their memory. Second, students got accustomed to conventional math problems too much, so they couldn't distinguish new types of mathematical problems from them sometimes and did faulty reasoning in the problem solving process. Finally, it was very common for students to make errors on calculation and to make technical errors in recognizing mathematical symbols in the problem solving process. When students fully understood the mathematical concepts including a definition of function and learned procedural knowledge of them by themselves, they did not repeat the same errors. Also, explaining the functional concept with a graph related to the function did facilitate their understanding,

  • Among these satellites, low - orbit small satellites with military characteristics require multi - target observation, and demand for high-resolution photographs and images is increasing. Fast maneuverability is the most important factor for high-resolution images and multi - target observations. However, in the case of a small satellites, it is possible to perform the attitude maneuver if it has high speed, but the residual vibration occurs when the attitude maneuver is completed and the next attitude maneuver is completed. In this study, to verify the vibration characteristics of the plate generated after attitude maneuver, an experimental fixture for simulating the attitude maneuver was fabricated and tested. In addition, Eddy Current Damper (ECD) using Eddy Current Brake system (ECB) is proposed as a passive damping method using permanent magnet to reduce vibration. A mathematical model was established to apply ECD and it was experimentally implemented according to the magnetic flux density and the air gap of the permanent magnet. One plate of four solar panels (plate) was specified, the residual vibration reduction performance after the test was verified experimentally.

  • Predictive food microbiology(PFM) is an emerging area of food microbiology since the later 1980’s. It does apply mathematical models to predict the responses of microorganism to specified environmental variables. Although, at present, PFM models do not completely developed, models can provide very useful information for microbiological responses in HACCP(Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) system and Risk Assessment. This study illustrates the possible use of PFM models(PMP: Pathogen Modeling Program win5.1) with milk in several elements in the HACCP system, such as conduction of hazard analysis and determination of CCP(Critical Control Points) and CL(Critical Limits). The factors likely to affect the growth of the pathogens in milk involved storage fixed factors were pH 6.7, Aw 0.993 and NaCl 1.3%. PMPwin5.1 calculated generation time, lag phase duration, time to level of infective dose for pathogens across a range of storage (Critical Control Points) and CL(Critical Limits). The factors likely to affect the growth of the pathogens in milk involved storage temperature, pH, Aw and NaCl content. • The standards for achievement levels for building blocks in elementary geometry class is to enhance spatial cognitive ability through practices describing shape patterns of building blocks observed from different directions. However, most of building block in the textbook is described from only one perspective. Even worse, some examples in the textbook are almost impossible to observe in the real world. Contrary to this, simulated views by Wings3D has shown that each box may look quite differently from different angles let alone the size of each box. Using Wings3D, it is also very easy to build different types of building blocks with various levels of difficulty in the virtual space. Based on these results, in this study, 3D visualization SW is suggested as a potential pedagogical tool for the elementary geometry class to help kids perceive objects in space more precisely. We have shown that 3D visualization SW such as Wings3D could be a powerful, compact 3D SW for most of subjects which are covered in elementary geometry education. Wings3D has another advantage of economic open source SW fully compatible with school PCs.
