  • Somatic chromosome numbers of 19 taxa of Korean Rubus was investigated. Subg. Anoplobatus (2 species), subg. Cylactis (1 species), subg. Idaeobatus (15 taxa) and subg. Malachobatus (1 species) are found in Korea. All taxa belonging to subg. Idaeobatus except for R. parvifolius which shows tetrapolid and hexaploid are diploid. The basic chromosome number of the genus was x=7. New chromosome numbers for 5 taxa were reported here: R. hongnoensis of Jeju-island endemic species, 2n=14; R. longisepalus, 2n=14; R. longisepalus var. tozawai, 2n=14; R. parvifolius, 2n=28; R. parvifolius var. taquetii, 2n=28. The rest 12 taxa except for R. coreanus Miq was well counted as 2n=14 and well consistent with previous reports from China and Japan. Our new chromosome level for R. parvifolius as 6x may indicate that speciation by polyploidization has occurred within Korean population. Unlikely to Japanese population (2n=42), Korean population of R. buergeri has same ploidy level with Taiwanese population as 2n=56.

  • Adenophora racemosa is recently reported as a new Korean endemic plant species. However, the phylogenetic relationship of this genus has been controversial due to the morphological similarity and frequent morphological change of aerial parts. To verify the phylogenetic position of Adenophora racemosa and phylogenetic relationship of genus Adenophora, we analyzed the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequence of nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrDNA) and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) using 21 individual of 6 Adenophora species, A. verticillata, A. divaricata, A. racemosa, A. remotiflora, A. stricata and A. tetraphylla. In comparative analysis of the nrDNA-ITS sequences, we could not found not only any species specific nucleotide sequence but also could not estimated their inter or intra species. In the phylogenic analysis based on the RAPD derived DNA polymorphism, Adenophora species were classified into four groups by clustering analysis of the UPGMA. These results suggest that the DNA fingerprinting based on RAPD is more suitable than nrDNA-ITS sequence for the phylogenetic analysis of Adenophora species.

  • Members of the genus Asarum of Korea were reviewed taxonomically, and classified into seven species. Among them, four species - A. koreanum, A. maculatum, A. patens and A. versicolor - were recorded as Korean endemics. The most valuable taxonomic characters in identifying the Asarum taxa were shape, size and color of the calyx tube and lobe. In addition, the presence of white spots on the adaxial surface, size and color of leaf, presence of trichome, shape and size of the stylar protuberance and thickness of the calyx lobe were also important characters. Keys to the species including descriptions and figures of floral structures of each taxon were provided here for the accurate identification of each species.

  • Optimal conditions of protoplast isolation from the seaweed Prophyra pseudolinearis have been described. The P. pseudolinearis is one of indigenous and dominant Porphyra species in the East Sea region. Protoplasts have been released by enzymatic treatment of 2% agarase and 2% hemicellulase in 25mM MES buffer, pH 6.0 containing 0.5 M sorbitol. The protoplasts could be fused with neutral red-stained protoplasts of P. okamurae by the addition of polyethylene glycol 8000 solution.

  • We investigated the feeding habits of Rhynchocypris kumgangensis in Hongcheon River of Saenggokri, Seoseokmyeon, Hongcheongun, Gangwon-do, Korea from April 2002 to March 2003. The fish is korean endemic species upper streams in Korea. It was asscertained that R. kumgangensis is a carnivore and consumes mainly Ephemeroptera, Diptera, Terrestrial insects and Trichoptera. The most important prey was chironomids: Chironomus sp. Their feeding habits changed according to growth. Small fish fed mainly on small prey organisms such as Diptera, while larger fish fed much more on Ephemeroptera and Terrestrial insects. There were also seasonal changes in the relative proportion of their food items.

  • Scapharca satawi is dioecious and attains sexual maturity, when it grows to a shell length of 70 mm. Its ovary is composed of a number of ovarian sacs; likewise, its testis is also composed of several testicular tubules. During the year 1999-2000, the condition index reached the maximum (0.017) in June and spawning occurred from July to September, when water temperature remained above 23$^{\circ}C$. The reproductive cycle of S. satowi can be classified into five successive stages: early active (December to March), late active (April to May), ripe (June 7o July), partially spawned (July to September) and spent/inactive (September and November) stages. Monthly changes in the condition index were closely relaxed to its reproductive cycle.
