  • In this paper, a magnetic flux leakage(MFL) based steel bar damage detection was first researched to quantify the signals from damages on the wire rope. Though many researches inspecting damages using a MFL method was proceeded until the present, the researches are at the level that diagnose whether damages are or not. This has limitation to take measures in accordance with the damage level. Thus, a MFL inspection system was modeled using a finite element analysis(FEM) program dealing with electromagnetism problems, and a steel bar specimen was adopted as a ferromagnetic object. Then, an experimental study was also carried out to verify the simulation results with a steel bar which has same damage conditions as the simulation. The MFL signals was nearly not affected by the increase of the inspection velocity, and the magnitudes of the signals are not identical according to the change of the defect width even the defects have same depth. On the basis of the analysis, the signal properties from the damages were extracted to classify the type of damages, and it could be confirmed that classification of damages using extracted signal properties is feasible.

  • An analysis has been performed to estimate the additional number of workers and the additional collective dose in man-cSv which would be required, nuclear industry-wide as a result of reducing individual dose limit. This analysis can be extended to the reduction in the dose limits recommended by ICRP Publ.60 and BEIR V report as well as the proposed dose limits by regulatory authorities. An industry-wide database was employed in the analysis based on a summary of industry-wide occupational radiation exposure compiled by the Korea Radioisotope Association. Correlation model was employed to compute the affects of setting specific annual individual dose limits. In this study, we have addressed worker non-productivity while in the radiation environment on a parametric or 'sensitivity analysis' basis. This alleviates the need for developing such data underlying a summation of many individual tasks at many nuclear facilities. It has the advantage that very low non-productivity assumptions can readily be defended as conservative, in that it is difficult to approach such low worker non-productivity factors even in the best of environments in any industry. On a per facility basis, for calendar year 1997, the number of workers required would be increased from 231 workers to 269 workers and collective man-cSv dose would be also increased by approximately fourteen percent if the individual dose limit was reduced to 2 cSv/y and an individual worker non-productivity fraction of 0.1 is assumed.

  • Pipeline is one of the most abundant components in petrochemical plant. It plays a critical role in transporting fluids. Some pipelines are thermally insulated by wrapping them with insulating materials to prevent the loss of energy. However, when corrosion begins under insulation, it cannot be easily seen without unwrapping the cover, and thus corrossion should be detected using a non-destructive ways such as ultrasound guided wave. In this paper, the piping where the CUI (Corrosion Under Insulation) which occurs in the insulation parts guided waves effectively the optimum condition which is theoretical for selected guided waves phase velocity dispersion curve and wave-structure. The results of this study are expected to be directly utilized for onsite inspection of pipeline's CUI in many petrochemical plants.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the possibility of rapid and non-des tructive evalution of AV (Acid Value), IV (Iodine Value) and fatty acids in sesame oils. The samples were scanned over the range $400\sim2500nm$ using transmittance spectrum of NIRS(Near-infrared spectroscopy). A calibration equation calculated by MPLS regression technique was developed and correlation coefficient of determination for AV, IV, palmitic acid, stearic acid, linoleic acid and linolenic acid content were 0.9907, 0.9677, 0.9527, 0.9210, 0.9829, 0.9736 and 0.9709 respectively. The validation model for measuring the AV content had R of 0.989, SEP of 0.058 and IV content had R of 0.944, SEP of 0.562 and palmitic acid content had R of 0.924, SEP of 0.194 and stearic acid content had R of 0.717, SEP of 0.168 and oleic acid content had R of 0.989, SEP of 0.221 and linoleic acid content had R of 0.967, SEP of 0.297 and linolenic acid content had R of 0.853, SEP of 0.480 by MPLS. The obtained results indicate that the NIRS procedure can potentially be used as a non-destructive analysis method for the purpose of rapid and simple measurement of AV, IV and fatty acids in sesame oils.

  • Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys are commonly used to monitor embankments, which is a nondestructive geophysical method. The results of GPR surveys can be complex, depending on the situation, and data processing and interpretation are subject to expert experiences, potentially resulting in false detection. Additionally, this process is time-intensive. Consequently, various studies have been undertaken to detect cavities in GPR survey data using deep learning methods. Deep-learning-based approaches require abundant data for training, but GPR field survey data are often scarce due to cost and other factors constaining field studies. Therefore, in this study, a deep- learning-based model was developed for embankment GPR survey cavity detection using data augmentation strategies. A dataset was constructed by collecting survey data over several years from the same embankment. A you look only once (YOLO) model, commonly used in computer vision for object detection, was employed for this purpose. By comparing and analyzing various strategies, the optimal data augmentation approach was determined. After initial model development, a stepwise process was employed, including box clustering, transfer learning, self-ensemble, and model ensemble techniques, to enhance the final model performance. The model performance was evaluated, with the results demonstrating its effectiveness in detecting cavities in embankment GPR survey data.

  • This study deals with internal state and tissue density analysis methods for red ginseng grade determination. For internal measurement of red ginseng, there have been various studies on nondestructive testing methods since the 1990s, It was difficult to grasp the most important inner hole and inside whites in the grading. So in this study, we developed a closed capturing device for infra-red illumination environment, and developed an internal measurement system that can detect the presence and diameter of inner hole and inside whites. Made devices consisted of infrared lights with a high transmission rate of red ginseng in 920 nanometer wave band, a infra-red camera and a Y axis actuator with a red ginseng automatically controlled focus on the camera. The proposed algorithm performs an auto-focus system on the Y-axis actuator to automatically adjust the sharp focus of the object according to the size and thickness. Then red ginseng is rotated $360^{\circ}$ at $1^{\circ}$ intervals and 360 total images are acquired, and reconstructed as a sinogram through Radon transform and Back-projection algorithm was performed to acquire internal images of red ginseng. As a result of the algorithm, it was possible to acquire internal cross-sectional image regardless of the thickness and shape of red ginseng. In the future, if more than 10,000 different shapes and sizes of red ginseng internal cross-sectional image are acquired and the classification criterion is applied, it can be used as a reliable automated ginseng grade automatic measurement method.

  • The safety of expressway bridges was estimated by checking the external condition rank based on the nondestructive inspection and material test and by measuring load carrying capacity based on the result of load test. Although the load carrying capacity of the bridges was clearly low compared to the design standard, it was examined that many of the bridges have good external condition rank relatively. Also, it can be assured that load carrying capacity shows a considerable difference according to various condition even though the bridges have similar construction year and a structural type. Therefore, this study showed various problems of the current safety measurement of expressway bridges by considering the status of the expressway bridges, external condition rank, and method of safety diagnosis and repair, rehabilitation for maintenance. Based on the existing data of over 400 expressway bridges, the load carrying capacity was analyzed quantitatively considering bridge type, serviced life, design live load, external condition rank and traffic count as variables. The result of this study will be expected to provide the basic information for a reasonable safety assessment of expressway bridge.

  • ln order to manage efficiently many ancient wooden buildings, which have been preserved as cultural properties in Korea, the internal state of wood members should be evaluated exactly and periodically by a NDE (non-destructive evaluation) method. A research project was planned to develop an X-ray CT (computed tomography) system as a NDE method for wood, which could be easily applied in field. This paper includes the first part of this project. First of all, to establish a measuring procedure of wood density using X-ray radiography, the correlation between X-ray intensity and the film brightness was evaluated. Also, initial X-ray intensity was quantified with various radiate conditions controlled by the tube voltage and tube current. And then, the effects of density, annual ring angle, and thickness on the mass attenuation coefficient of wood were examined. Finally, Beer's law was modified with the above results and adopted to calculate the density of wood. As a result of this study, the measuring procedure of wood density was established using a portable soft X-ray device and this procedure was verified with some small wood specimens. This results will he used valuably for the following researches to develop a portable X-ray CT system.

  • A series of the studies on the applied physical properties of domestic species have been conducted last three years. Pinus densiflora was one of the three species examined for the first year. Because the same apparatus and experimental procedures were used for all species, their results can be easily comparable. The experiments for sorption property were conducted with 20- and 80-mesh wood powder and resulted in their EMC's and sorption isotherms at various heating conditions. The thermal conductivity and diffusivity, and electric resistance and volumetric electric resistivity were measured with a thermal-wire device and a high electric resistance meter. The differences of the thermal and electric properties between quarter- and flat-sawn specimens were observed, which was partially attributed to their anatomical differences. An acoustic measurement system was used to evaluate dynamic MOE and internal friction. This paper provides the useful fundamental data for designing a wood structure, correcting a portable resistance-type moisture meter, and nondestructive testing wood.

  • The history of printing technology in Korea is studied by investigating existing ancient documents and records and comparing accumulated data and knowledge. Cultural property research requires non-destructive testing and observation with the naked eye or aided by a microscope. Researchers' experience and knowledge are required even though they cannot guarantee the outcome. For ancient documents and records that are presumed to consist of woodblock printing, wood type printing, metal type printing, or their combinations, each researcher draws various opinions and conclusions. This often causes confusion and divides the opinions of ordinary citizens and field specialists. Among them, the criteria for judging ancient documents or books printed using woodblock and metal movable material are ambiguous. Academic research on the development history of printing technology in ancient Korea has been stagnant, and conflicts among researchers have also erupted. Involvement of national investigative agencies not specialized in cultural properties has exacerbated the situation. In this study, we investigated printing characteristics that are likely to serve as more objective judgment criteria by quantitatively analyzing the experiments of retrieving several sheets of Korean paper (Hanji) using a replicated Hunminjeongeum (訓民正音) woodblock and quantitatively analyzing the images of the printed papers. In addition, the validity and questions for the typical phenomena presented as a method for distinguishing between woodblock and metal print are reviewed. We investigated the possibility of developing new objective judgement criteria through quantitative analysis using image analysis and investigating the printing characteristics of Korean paper through a reproduction experiment of woodblock printing.
