  • This study verified how R&D investment affects the management performance of SMEs, whether technology innovation mediates this relationship, and whether marketing competency moderates the relationship between technology innovation and management performance. A longitudinal analysis was conducted using data from the corporate panel survey performed by Daegu Technopark every year since 2013. Data from 349 companies in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region were mainly used, and the size of 30 to 50 employees in the manufacturing industry was a major analysis target company. The results are as below. First, The results showed that R&D investment had a positive effect on management as well as technology innovation, but technology innovation did not affect management performance. Also, technological innovation did not mediate the relationship between R&D investment and management performance. This shows that in the case of small SMEs, even if technological innovation occurs through R&D investment, the technological innovation does not lead to management performance. Also, the relationship between technological innovation and management performance was not changed by marketing capabilities. This shows that technological innovation in small SMEs is not easy to lead to business performance.

  • This study examines whether firms' openness to external knowledge improves their innovative performance and what factors make openness more effective in generating innovation. Using 2008 Korean Innovation Survey in manufacturing sector, this study tests whether openness improves innovative performance and how absorptive capacity, small size and use of appropriation methods to a high degree influence the effect of openness on innovation in Korean manufacturing industries. This study finds the followings: First, the effect of openness varies depending on type of innovation. Openness is more effective for incremental innovation than for radical innovation. Second, there exists complementarity between openness and the R&D intensity when innovation is incremental. When the R&D intensity level is high, the effect of openness on incremental innovation is stronger than on radical innovation. Third, openness is more effective for small firms to perform radical innovation than incremental innovation. Fourth, when a firm uses appropriation methods to a high degree, openness is not effective for incremental innovation.

  • This study investigates the extent to which product innovation is associated with firm performance, and how this effect is moderated by other type of innovation efforts. Empirical analysis is conducted (1) to determine the effect of product innovation on firm performance; (2) to explore the moderating effect that process innovation, organizational innovation and marketing innovation activities each has on the relationship between product innovation and firm performance. The analytical sample comprises a total of 816 Korean manufacturing firms from the 2010 KIS (Korean Innovation Survey) data and merged with financial data from KIS Info for acquiring the objectivity. The results show that product innovation is positively associated with a firm performance. Product innovation when combined with higher levels of process, organizational and marketing innovation activities resulted in higher firm performance. The results suggest that product innovation is a decisive factor of firm performance. More importantly, process, organizational and marketing innovation activities support product innovation and thus impact firm performance indirectly. In addition, this study examines the effect of innovation activities on firm performance by different firm size and R&D intensity, thereby further improving the details of this study.

  • In this study, in addition to non-technical innovation activities such as organizational innovation and marketing innovation, the purpose of this study was to verify through empirical analysis what mechanism appropriation affects the business performance of a company. Data were collected from the 2018 Korean Business Innovation Survey: Manufacturing Sector and used as analysis data. As a result of the analysis, it was verified through empirical analysis that non-technical innovation improves management performance, appropriability is affected by non-technical innovation, and acts as a mediating factor between management performance. Through this empirical analysis, it was derived that considering appropriation along with non-technical innovation on the recently studied non-technical innovation can be a meaningful study, and since securing such appropriation is an important factor in determining the business performance of a company. Companies need insight into the strategic use of technology protection measures to secure appropriation. As a limitation, it was limited to studies that verify that it has a mediating effect of non-technical innovation and appropriation, and it is considered that it is possible to develop a study that affects the management performance of a company through more various verification methods for future studies.

  • The main purpose of this study is to analyze the determinants of innovation in the medium core firms that belong to components and materials industry. For this purpose, we introduce the Schumpeterian hypothesis as a theoretical background at first. According to the Schumpeterian hypothesis, large firms in concentrated markets are likely to have more innovative activities. That means, firm site and market structure are the main determinant of innovation. Then, we propose other economic factors that have been considered to have effects on firms' innovative activities in previous studies. Those factors are export, profit, growth rate, R&D expenditure and capital intensity. In order to analyze the determinants of innovation, we estimate whether firm size, market structure, export, profit, growth rate, R&D expenditure and capital intensity affect to the possibility of creating innovation in medium core firms. In order to do this, our study uses survey data from 'Korean Innovation Survey(2005)' conducted by STEPI as well as utilizes the probit model as an analytical method. According to the empirical results, firm size has a positive relationship with innovative activities of medium core firms but market concentration does not. We find the negative correlation between market concentration and innovative activities in this study. Thus, was have to say that we do not fully support the Schumpeterian hypothesis in this case. Among other variables, profit and R&D expenditure are estimated to have positive relationship with innovative activities, while export and capital intensity are estimated to have negative relationship with innovative activities. In case of growth rate, we do not find any significant relationship with innovative activities. In conclusion, larger firm size, higher market competition, more access to the financial market and additional R&D investment would facilitate innovative activities of medium core firms. However, we have to review the relationship between export and innovative activities that has been estimated in this study. While the estimated effect of export on innovative activities can be explained by the own characteristics of medium core firms that produce and supply capital goods to final manufacturer, we have address this issue in the future.

  • This article analyzed the direct impact of resource inputs on business performances of Korean environmental companies conducting R&D, and the mediation effects of product-, process-, organization-, marketing-innovations between resource inputs and business performances. We conducted the mediation analysis using SPSS and Process Macro, based on a survey data from the Korean environmental companies. The article found that ① resource inputs have directly had a positive impact on business performances, and ② innovations have mediated them. ③ But among 4 types of innovations, the only mediation effect of organization-innovation has been verified, and the others have not appeared. Considering the above results, the following policy implications can be suggested. ① It is necessary to reinforce related policies so that companies can improve business performances through innovation. ② The government needs to carry out the prudent supporting policies so that innovations in product, process, and marketing can lead to business performances. This article has the limitation of using the survey data, and needs further researches on the sectoral system of innovation for Korean environmental industry.
